2024-25 Japanese Men's Figure Skating

@Jumping_Bean This is how I view it as well, especially in the context of a senior field in which the younger quadsters are clearly favoured, despite having already experienced serious injury in the past. The message is clearly 'develop fast, land multi quads consistently, or you will be left behind'.

Meanwhile, Taiga tweeted saying: "Thank you for your support for the Junior Grand Prix! I was able to gain a lot of experience in this competition.
I will do my best to correct the things I couldn't do in this competition before the next competition so that I can give a good performance."

Heartbreaking.

Can someone explain? Not that I'm complaining, but why is Sota listed as an alternate when he graduated a year ago? Is it because his affiliation with Chukyo continues?

Did Sota graduate officially in 2024 or 2023? If it's recent enough, I think he is still eligible because of this rule:

5.2.2 Only the following may participate as athletes in the FISU World University Games:

a. students who are currently officially registered as proceeding towards a degree or diploma at the university or similar institute, the status of which is recognised by the appropriate national academic authority of their country;

b. former students of the institutions mentioned in a) who have obtained their academic degree or diploma in the calendar year preceding the event.

It was in March 2024, so almost a year ago. I didn't know of that rule. His selection makes sense now, thanks!

I don’t follow the Japanese men nearly as closely as I follow the women, but even so, I decided to do the men as well:

Worlds 2025 Selection Criteria

A.
  1. National champion will be selected.
  • TBD
B.
  1. Second and third at Nationals
  2. Top two GPF competitors
  3. Top three season’s best
  • TBD
  • Kagiyama, Sato
  • Kagiyama (300.09), Sato (285.88), Miura (278.67)
C.
  1. Top three world standing
  2. Top three season ranking
  3. Top three highest average score in two competitions, to include domestic competition
  • Kagiyama (3), Sato (4), Miura (5)
  • Kagiyama (3) Sato (4), Yamamoto (9)
  • Kagiyama (295.82), Sato (282.18), Yamamoto (259.86)
Selection Pool: Kagiyama, Sato, Miura, Yamamoto. Any skater outside these four will have to make the podium for consideration for the World’s team.

Kagiyama and Sato are the frontrunners and they don’t necessarily have to make the podium to make the team. (There’s precedence of this in the last two seasons.) Things can get sticky for Sato if he’s beaten by both Miura and Yamamoto (very sticky if they’re both on the podium and he isn’t), but I think he’ll make the team as long as he doesn’t finish in ninth place or something. I think the team will be Kagiyama, Sato, and one of Miura and Yamamoto. I don’t expect to be surprised at all because if anyone outside the aforementioned four land on the podium they still won’t be going to Worlds, provided the four are within the top five.

4CC Selection Criteria

  1. Top 10 at Nationals
  2. Top six WS
  3. Top six season ranking
  4. Top six SB
  5. Top six highest average score of two competitions
  • TBD
  • Kagiyama (3), Sato (4), Miura (5), Yamamoto (10), Tomono (18), Yoshioka (25)
  • Kagiyama (3), Sato (4), Yamamoto (9), Miura (16), Shimada (22), Tomono (32)
  • Kagiyama (300.09), Sato (285.88), Miura (278.67), Yamamoto (262.72), Tsuboi (251.52), Tomono (238.41)
  • Kagiyama (295.82), Sato (282.18), Yamamoto (259.86), Miura (259.55), Tsuboi (245.37), Tomono (234.95)
It’s possible that Japan will send a completely different team to 4CC if the World’s team is Kagiyama-Sato-Miura as all three will be in the final group and don’t need WS points. But I think that one of them will get sent anyway. Yamamoto will probably be sent if he doesn’t make the Worlds team, and whoever else finishes the highest at Nationals and isn’t selected for Worlds.

Junior Worlds Selection Criteria

A. Junior National Champion will be selected for Junior Worlds.
  • Rio Nakata
B.
  1. Second and third at junior nationals
  2. JGPF competitors
  3. Top 3 at Nationals
  4. Top 3 SB
  5. Top 3 highest average score in two junior competitions, to include domestic competitions
  • Sena Takahashi, Taiga Nishino
  • Nakata, Takahashi
  • TBD
  • Nakata (233.53), Takahashi (229.66), Nakamura (212.73)
  • Nakata (226.12), Takahashi (221.33), Nakamura (209.11)*
Takahashi should make the JW team. The third spot seems to be between Nishino and Nakamura. I’m thinking that whoever between the two is higher at Nationals will be named to the team.

*Nakamura competed as a senior domestically. Only his international junior scores were used.

I think it's probably going to be Shun Sato, because he's the only one out of the Kagiyama-Sato-Miura trio who hasn't won a 4CC title. But Shun is also assigned to AWG the week prior (with Yuma) so that's probably going to be an issue. Then again, JSF has sent a top male skater to do back-to-back AWG and 4CC before, so this won't be something new for them.

The battle between Kao vs. Sota for Worlds should be interesting... I know we have been waiting for the 3 Kanto Bears Worlds team for years now, but I think Sota got dealt a bad hand in GP assignments and am rooting for him to grab that Worlds spot, LOL.

I hope Koshiro and Kazuki do well, but I think without international assignments I'm pretty sure they'll get ice show opportunities post-Nationals that is better financially for them. (Kassouya will be in Hiroshima next year!)

How I'll be watching Japanese Nationals this year, knowing that Kazuki has no chance in hell of getting assignments due to poor performance in the GP + not being politically favoured:

If he lands on the podium and in front of Yamamoto, Shimada and Tsuboi then he might get 4CC...? But it's a very big condition to satisfy indeed 😬

Kazuki's a bit unlucky. He was in podium position in both his GPs after the SP... and it's the worst 2 GPs out of the lot. If he had 1 GP medal he would have been in a better position. Koshiro was the third alternate for GPF, ffs.
