2024 Worlds: General Info and Pre-game chat

The first time I heard about Poutine I thought it sounded like the most disgusting dish ever. But then I'm German, so I better keep my mouth shut about food. 😬
Poutine is delicious. How can it not be ? Potatoes and cheese ? Of course, it's fast food. It's not refined unless you go to Au pied de cochon, where you can buy a poutine for 35$ which is served with seared foie gras.

Welcome to Montreal ;)

Before others freak out - these are pastries

See.. i didn't know they were typical Montreal ? I thought they were common in all amusement parks, are they not ? That tells you I much prefer savory to sweet food

Fascinating story about the beaver tails...

For those observing Lent : In the 17th century, the bishop of Quebec City decreed that the beaver was a fish, because it lived mainly in the water and had scales on its tail, which meant that the Roman Catholic inhabitants of New France could eat beaver on Fridays and during Lent, when their Church forbid them to eat meat.
And for @icewhite
The pastries that we now call BeaverTails came from a recipe belonging to Grant Hooker’s grandmother, who was of German origin

I was poking around on the ISU website and it has a colorful time schedule listed under the "For Teams" section of the event page! (Now how can I store my luggage and get to the men's official practice session immediately after I get off my plane on Monday evening?!?)
I have looked at the practice schedule... I don't think I will be able to attend other than perhaps the men on Saturday morning... if i am not dead already by then. Being a figure skating fan is intense.

 It seems to be similar to what is here called Franzbrƶtchen (indicating French origin, but it's actually from Hamburg... only the form is different... maybe because we do not have many beavers here...) or what I would call Berliner... and what the Berliner call Pfannkuchen... and what is elsewhere known as Krapfen... only with the topping... on top instead of stuffed in.

It's going to take some dedication to get oneself to the practices. If only I could be two places at once! LOL. I mainly want to see the men's practices, but I wouldn't mind seeing some others too. So I checked the men's schedule. Looks like once we get to Weds., all practices are at the alternate rink. Makes sense.

Monday -- Practice Rink 10:30 am - 2:30 pm; Main Rink (Bell Centre) 6:40 pm - 10:40 pm

Tuesday -- MR 6:30 am - 10:30 am; PR 2:40 pm - 6:40 pm

Weds. -- PR 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm
(same time as the pairs short comp. is going on at MR )

Thurs. -- PR 7 am - 10:30 am
(immediately followed by men's SP competition at MR)

Fri. -- MR 11am - 1:10 pm
(same time as Rhythm Dance comp.)

Sat -- PR 10:20 am - 12:15 pm

Thanks for the link. I especially liked the competitor who named their version: Canadian Semiaquatic Rodent Posterior Doughnut:)

I didn't know there was a chain of fastfood outlets (?or whatever they are) called that. The beaver tails I remember buying my kids when we lived in Ottawa and Montreal were bought in doughnut shops and were as if you took a ball of glazed doughnut mixture (not cake doughnut batter) and instead of shaping it in a ring, you just smashed it with your fist and made it a flat oval shape. Maybe it was a different bakery and they just called their shape that but didn't copyright it like this family did. (They also made doughnut people, and Christmas tree and bell shapes in midwinter.)

Ahhhh....those days of yesteryear when I went to US nats and went to all the Novice, Jr and Senior practices as well as the comps.....it would just about kill me by weeks end....but had lots of fun talking with friends....There were of course places like Worlds LA 2009 and US Nats Omaha, Greensboro, etc where the practice rink was close by....

i had it a couple times when visiting La Ronde, the amusement park. I liked the simple sprinkled sugar ones.. never had any of these ones with so many toppings

I don't know how you did that! Even a Sk Amer can be tiring when you do it all. But it is energizing and fun talking with everyone. You will be missed at Worlds!

My very first beaver tail had strawberries and cream on it.

When I told my MontrƩal friend about this, he blamed me for being mundane and devoid of any creativity.

According to him the best topping is banana + nutella.

haha this is something typical a Montrealer would say :)

banana and nutella is a good combo.. never had it on beaver tail but i had it on toast and pancakes.. very popular... i wonder who is less original, you or your friend :)

I dont think this effects anyone here but I thought I would put it out there in case anyone knew of such a person. This message was Issued by my cruise line March 5th.

Don't be scared of the retirement thread... to me, the beautiful dance they showed a few weeks ago (outside venue) is like a swan song. At first, I saw it as a "yay, they did train and want to come back"... but now, with some time to think about it, the emotion was so intense and raw after their skate, it's hard not to think it's a very likely possibility. :( Retirement or not, unfulfilled career for sure. Reminds me of Seguin Bilodeau who were also fan favourites and making early waves but then..... concussions over concussions.. :(zy

You just made me MORE scared.
