2024-25 Japanese Women's Figure Skating

There are just two more early Autumn Challengers remaining in the JSF list, aren't there? Nebelhorn and Nepela. I thought Asian Open was a Challenger this season, so either I blinked and it lost its status, or I was mistaken from the start.
Looking at the GP list, if JSF assigns everyone who competes on the GP circuit, the ones who are on the waiting list are Rino, Rion, Wakaba, Yuna, Hana, Mone and Mai... wow. Only with the Golden Spin in December would they cover all of the spots. It's going to be hard for the Japanese women. Good luck to all to get picked.

In last 2 years JSF sent to chalengers only skaters, who prior season were selected to 4CC and WC (I suspect they will add JWC team next year). So only Sakamoto, Yoshida, Chiba, Watanabe and Mihara will go.

And yes, I find it dumb too. Sumiyoshi, Aoki or Matsuike need points from chalengers much more than top 15 in WS.🤦‍♀️

Entries to the 1st CS competitions of the season, Lombardia Trophy, are announced as: https://results.isu.org/events/csita2024_Women.htm

So Kaori and Rinka will be there.

Without Japanese Open this season, hopefully the Japanese skaters will get more assignments for CS spots...

Japan Open shouldn't affect the CS spots too much, or should it? It's a fluff competition with no WS points distributed, even if it does give a pretty nice prize points. Before COVID it's common to see different Japanese skaters doing Japan Open and a CS at the same time (usually Nebelhorn / Finlandia).

- JO used to be considered as equal status as CS competitions: not internationally but domestically, as it can be in overlap with regional competitions. But I think that was long before COVID.
- So it looks like in addition to Nebelhorn and Asian Open, the other CS/international competitions are simply in overlap with the regional competitions for JSF to consider.
- (Asian Open is not listed as one of the CS competitions this season. It was in the past one or two seasons. Perhaps it has to do with that there are only men & women categories. They need one more category to apply for CS competition status.)

I probably won't be surprised if Mone and Hanna are sent together to one of the CS, since they train together. I do hope that JSF will sent some skaters to AO.

Asian Open Trophy is in JSF's calendar so they'll be sending skaters there. Kinda surprised the entry list for AO isn't out yet since it's happening in 2 weeks.

So it's Sakamoto, Yoshida, Chiba, Watanabe and Mihara + Yamashita got consolation price, because Aoki will go to NHK Trophy.

The thing is: this isn't a challenger. Yamashita can't get SB here.

And yes, as we discussed recently - it may give a confidence boost.
BUT
Confidence boost for what? So she again does exceptionally well at nationals, so in 2025 they will finally send her to a challenger where she will gain SB that will count during selection to competitions in 26/27 season? She will retire until then.

Senior b competitions are useless unless you need min tes or you're around places 20-40 in WS and need every point for GP.

Also, in the past JSF listed challengers from late October-December in their calendar too. And then didn't send anybody to them. I wouldn't hope for a change this year.

Maybe I'm naive but I think for a competitive athlete, no competition is useless. Especially autumn ones which they can use as an opportunity to adjust their programmes.

Mako hasn't competed abroad in a long time, she's not doing the GP series, so this is an invaluable opportunity to measure herself alongside foreign skaters, and get in shape before regionals and sections and, who knows? This might be a confidence boost for nationals, and we know that medalling at nationals has its benefits.

And perhaps Mako won the NHK spot so they're giving her an opportunity to compete internationally before NHK?
I agree with more CS and B events for Asian skaters. Perhaps if more were held in N/A and East/South Asia, more would get an opportunity to compete. Ideally, these skaters should have as many international competition opportunities as European skaters, most of whom have no issues filling those last two boxes in world standings with points.
