You Know You're a Figure Skating Fan When...

When you have (very recently) memorized how to spell Scheherazade, because one of your favorite skaters is skating to it this season, and you do not want to spell it wrong on GS, nor do you want to keep googling it to copy/paste it from another source. If you've kept track of my posts on this forum at all lately, you know which skater that is. ;)

Scheherazade

...when you watch an episode of "The Chase", and there is a question asking what cartoon character's full first name is "Minerva". And although you didn't actually realise it before, you know the answer straight away.

And then you immediately think "Hang on. Is Minerva Fabienne Hase named after Minnie Mouse?!"

Not only that, but her name (translated) means "Minnie Rabbit' -- so we get a Bugs Bunny reference in there, too.

When your mom who is 70 and you just recently forced her to go skating with you bc you think you need more quality time together and you remeber how she loved skating 30 years ago asks you if we are skating this Saturday and you quickly innerly bawl over all the fs streams you are going to miss (but choose family skating). Or when you hear random music and think about stsq that would go with it (not that you are able to do more than simple turns and one foot glides...).

Well spotted!  :points:

But... Bugs Bunny?

Surely it should be Honey Bunny! ;)

Anyway, bringing this back to finishing the thread title.

...when you also go searching for Jessica Rabbit skating, and get all excited when you find the following badge:

(I am so going to look for one of those!)

When you've left the International Assignments page open and realize it's been updated again and have a split second freak out about who might be in or out of an assignment, and calm down when you see that this update was just to update the results from the weekend.

...when you are reading a story about Judd TRUMP (ENG) winning the UK Snooker Championship at the weekend, and they mention his girlfriend and you think "I know that name". So you go digging, which confirms your suspicions...

MA Hiu Ching (Maisy MA), HKG

Maisy Hiu Ching MA - 2016 ISU Junior World Championships SP
Maisy Hiu Ching MA - 2013 ISU Junior Grand Prix Baltic Cup FS

All of Maisy's ISU PB's were achieved at 2016 Junior Worlds. The SP and overall scores were also her Absolute PB's, while the FS was her second highest ever FS score. But, I can only find a video of her SP. Her Absolute PB for the FS came a month later in Seniors at the Hong Kong Championships, but I can't find a video for it either. Nor can I find a video for her third highest scoring FS, from Juniors at the 2014 Hong Kong Championships. So, I had to go for the programme where she achieved her fourth highest FS score.

Apparently, Judd and Maisy have been an item for a while, but I never heard about it until now. The last I heard, he was seeing an equestrian rider from the UAE.

But, it is nice to see two of my favourite sports colliding. I hope Judd and Maisy are happy together.

...when you did a crossword puzzle several weeks ago and realized it didn't have just one skater, but two skaters in the clues!

Let me explain. The first skating-related clue was something like "Figure skating medalist ____ Lipinski." Of course, I wrote "TARA" in the appropriate boxes.

The next clue was trickier; it read "Card game cry." Hmm, what does one shout while playing card games? "GO FISH" wouldn't have worked because there were only three spaces available for the clue... so I worked on other clues for a while. Then it hit me. It's from a card game I somehow haven't played before! The answer was "UNO!" It would have been so much easier for me if the clue was "Figure skating medalist Shoma ___." 😂

I am a crossword maker. It is my side job. Finnish ones with pictures are world of it's own. Plenty of times I have had a situation that some skater's name would fit, but usually not so well-known ones. We don't have many word which ends to V. I hope Shaidorov would win Olympics, because his name is a perfect word to make to fit with Finnish ones. Tara is a perfect word, too.

When you live in the US and pay for Fuji on demand so you can watch Japanese regionals through a VPN.
When you download a very nice person's MP4 vids of 2024 Japanese Nats to a thumb drive and put it in a big envelope along with the score sheets so you can rewatch the comp before the next 2025 Japanese Nats and see how everyone is doing 12 months later....

when at the University games someone correctly guesses a piece of classical music as Carmen, looks very pleased with him/herself, teammates and the audience applaud, and you think "dudes, this is Carmen, what's the big deal?"

... and the calendar has a photo of one of them - a large one - on the front  and inside pages anyway.
...and you special-ordered that calendar from your favorite skater's home country...

Actually, that calendar was my 2024 calendar. (The small calendar at my workplace has gnomes in it. 😆) But the images in my skating-related calendar are so nice that when the year finally changes here, I'll be sure to keep the calendar, unlike most calendars I have used. 🙂

When you can’t skate but have dreams about skating. Once I dreamed that I did a 3Lz+2A and felt very pleased with myself. Usually I am not an elite skater but in the latest dream, my sister and I entered in the same competition and she got 102 for her SP! And ended up winning. I was a bit surprised because I thought my practices had been going just as well as hers, but after a bit I realized that I was very proud of her and my 4th place finish was pretty good, too.
