You Know You're a Figure Skating Fan When...

And if you happen to actually be an old pair team that just won't quit (why? still having too much fun!), how to feel even older: Do a move that was standard in your competitive years, and have a younger skater say "Wow, that's wild! Did you just invent that yourself?" 🧓👵🦽
That's how I learned to do a spread eagle and the grapevine. I met an Old Ice Follies skater on a public session who took great pleasure and gave me great joy to learn his cool moves. He also taught me to spin in both directions at Civic Arena in St. Clair Shores.. He would not tell me his name, but I treasured meeting him.

...when you watch an episode of "The Fall Guy" that is set during the Sarajevo 1984 Olympics. And when they start showing clips from various winter sports as the introduction, you are dying to see who they show when they get to figure skating.

As it turns out, you don't recognise the skater. So you go looking up videos from the 1983-84 season, to try to find a Ladies Singles skater with black hair wearing an orange dress. And then you go checking videos from the 1982-83 season as well, because the episode was broadcast on 1st February 1984 (a week before the Olympics started) and, allowing for post-production, it was probably filmed the previous winter. I don't know when they would have put together the introduction, but it may have been done before the start of the 1983-84 season.

But, alas, no luck.

Admittedly, when I first saw the thumbnail of her 1984 Worlds SP video, I thought it could be Anna Kondrashova (Arlet Levandi's Mum). But when I started playing it, I quickly discounted her. Anna looked exactly the same then as she does now, and this skater didn't look like her. Plus, Anna's SP dress was red rather than orange.

Any ideas?

"The Fall Guy" Series 3 Episode 17 - "Olympic Quest" (Time stamped for clip of skater).

I'll just add - I am enjoying the series. However, I am kinda surprised it lasted for so long (112 episodes). It must have cost an absolute fortune to make, what with all the cars that got wrecked in every episode! :drama:

I didn't know how to link her free skate program (in a black dress) video from youtube here, but I'm almost certain that's Kay Thomson of Canada. I recognized the short dark curls.

Was Kay the Canadian woman with really great cross foot spins?
Yes, she was noted for her spins, with some unique variations of her own on laybacks. She was competing in seniors in my era, so I got to see her quite often on the women's practice sessions. Canadian champion 1982/83/84 and competed at World's those years (finished 5th in '84) and at the 1984 Olympics.

Thank you so much!!!  :points:

I just knew somebody on here would be able to identify her!

And thank you both for the extra information about her. I looked at her Wikipedia page, and she had a pretty successful career.

I'd seen Kay's name popping up frequently in the thread where @Walt FSHunter is translating newspaper articles, so it is good to now put a face to the name.

Thank you again.

:thank:

When you have a horrible, horrible nightmare that your fiancé has retired and wake up and immediately check GS.
When you read this - while listening to the music below from the Far Side animation - and the evil twin inside your brain starts imagining @moonvine's fiancee skating to it.........

(Sorry. @moonvine!!)

...when you watch an episode of "Pointless", and the two questions in the final round are looking for acts that had No. 1 singles in America in either the 80's or the 90's. And for the 90's, the only answer you can think of is the Backstreet Boys.

See. This is the effect that watching this past season of Ice Dance has had on me!!! :drama:

...when a new acquaintance mentions that they love the anime Attack on Titan, you mention that Kao Miura skated to that anime's soundtrack. You then show them one of Kao's Attack on Titan performances and they are very impressed by it! Sensing how impressed they are, you then tell them that Kao Miura has an Instagram page they could follow-- and they start following him! You now feel as if you have done the work of the skating gods...
