2024-25 Japanese Women's Figure Skating

I doubt the J Fed will give Wakaba any special consideration from what I have observed over the years. Of course how the season plays out could have some effect, but if I was her, I would definitely want to podium for sure.
It will depend on next season, but she ends this season as Japan #3 quite solidly. The other women will have to overtake her with a strong case, as she's proven this year to be able to minimize her errors in her assignments and capitalize on all opportunities to stay ahead of other Japanese women not Kaori and Mone.

Do you think she would have went to World's this year if she switched places with Rino from 3rd to 5th(2.6 pts apart) at Nationals? I don't. Do you think she would have finished lower than 4th this
year if she skated as poorly as Mone did? I do. If next season is similar to this year, I see the last spot being decided at Nats, like it usually is. You can see from PCS scores at World's that she isn't supported like Mone is.

That's why I think the other women all have their work cut out to them to compete for that last spot because this season's Wakaba showed that she knew how to play for the WHOLE season, even as unsupported as she is. She came into this season's JNats ALREADY a #3 in most criterias for Worlds- qualified for GPF and was the 3rd best finishers at it outside of Kaori and Mone. Before Worlds she was again the highest finisher at 4CC above Mone and Rino. It will come down to Nationals but up to this point I haven't seen any Japanese women having as clutch as a season like Wakaba's.

I agree there. I would feel alot better though if she can bring her 3A back. But then I worry about injury if she does.

Mana Kawabe, Rin Morioka and now Hanaha Takeshima all leaving LYS at the end of this season...:scratch2::slink:

Rin --> Howa :palmf:
Hanaha --> Kinoshita Academy
Thought it was a good decision for Mana, to be honest. I think she got some of her mojo and confidence back after the 2022 Olympics so the next thing to work on if she wants to continue for a while is her jumps, which LYS is unlikely to help her in that department. And Mihoko didn't seem to start LYS to focus solely on elite competitions, so it can also be that the students think they need more intense and focused coaching, and she referred them to move to other coaches with more resources.

Mana could have gone to Yamada (who now has Soshi Tanaka on her team) but with Rino breaking through, Mako ending the season quite strong, and Kaoruko clearly needing more attention on her jumps because otherwise she's quite solid, Yamada's team has become a team of Mana's direct rivals in order for her to be prioritized. So going to Yuma's dad isn't a bad choice if she wants to stay in Nagoya and improve her jumps- he has no high profile senior female student I think.

The Sainichi Holdings Cup, a Free Skate only competition, finished today and offered us a few insights into next season.

Rinka Watanabe will be going back to her "Jin" Free Skate from the 2022-23 season, which has been reworked by Kenji Miyamoto. She will be getting a new costume designed by her mother, though. Her new Short has been set to the song "Get Lost" from Moana 2. She has stopped working on the 4Lo, and is now training the 4S. (Source) Apart from a fall on a rotated 3A, she skated her FS cleanly.

Ami Nakai plans to include the 3A in the Short & two 3As in the Free next season as she moves to Seniors. She's also working on a 4T and will keep her "Cinderella" Free Skate. David Wilson has choreographed a new Short Program for her, right after Junior Worlds. (Source) Ami unfortunately had three falls in the Free here, on the 3A, 3Lz and 3F, and popped the 3Lo, but she said she lands the 3A every day in training now.

Yo Takagi unfortunately didn't have a good performance here, but still won the Junior women's Free Skate, confirming that she won't be moving up to Seniors fully yet next season.

Karin Miyazaki, silver medalist at Novice Nationals & 9th at Junior Nationals, attempted a 3A. It was two-footed and downgraded, but still a big step forward for her. As she was born on 31.10.2012, she will not be Jr eligible internationally next season.

And on the topic of Novices, Novice B 4th place finisher, Nanami Ochi, has added 3Lz, 3F and 3S to her 3T since Novice Nationals. The rotation isn't quite there yet on all of these jumps, but she's 10 and has plenty of time to get there in the next three years.

Some (partial) videos can be found on Twitter, if you are interested.

this is honestly what i really hope Wakaba does with Skyfall, it would be so cool to see a reworked program with the maturity and skill she has today! i don't think it's likely, but still keeping my fingers crossed. that program fit her so well, it's one of my favorites ever.

Does anyone know if this awesome skater will comeback for the Olympic season :

I miss Rika Kihira, she deserve to be free injury and comeback this season !

This is so true! Rika would deserve all the gold and glitter this world has to offer, and yet her time in the spotlight was so short and she got so little reward for everything she gave us. So unfair.
And so many people remembering her so fondly after all these years - it speaks volumes of how great and how well loved she was.
As for your question, I would love her to come back but I am not sure if it is very realistic TBH :frown:

I missed the news that Mana moved to Yuma's dad - was there an announcement on social media?
And out of curiosity, are there any other coaches in that team other than Yuma's dad? (Carolina!? I think she seems to be exclusively coaching Yuma though )

The news was out a couple of weeks ago. I think it had to do with the common point of training environment at Chukyo U (Yuma now trains there, and Mana is still a Chukyo U student.) I think in the media Mana said she got help from Yuma's dad for the jumps, and it was effective. So she decided to ask the possibility of switching coach to him.
I think the coach arrangement won't involve Carolina.

Who will compete CS Kinoshita Group Cup ?

Last year 7 American women compete CS Cranberry Cup International.
LEVITO 3, EVERHARDT 4, SEO 5, ANDREWS 6, LIN-GRACEY 10, HILMER 12, WARNE-JACOBSEN 13
(Number is 2024 US national result)

Something like
SAKAMOTO 1, HIGUCHI 3, CHIBA 4, MATSUIKE 5, YAMASHITA 6, WATANEBE 7, SUMIYOSHI 8, MIYAKE 9, YOSHIDA 11, AOKI 12, KAWABE 13
minus few skaters?

It is good if YAMASHITA, MIYAKE and KAWABE records ISU season best.

how about
KUSHIDA 14 (senior ice dance and junior single ?)
NAKAI 15
EGAWA 20 (not enough for internationally ?)
MIHARA (if healthy enough for competition)
KIHIRA (if healthy enough for competition)
SHIBAYAMA (junior ice dance and junior single ?)
SHIMIZU (stopped pairs but not enough for internationally ?) (18th 2023 senior national single)

This is likely why LYS' students are leaving.... the club is relaunching with a Niigata base at the MGC Arena (still keeping the Nagoya branch at Moricoro with Rie Yamada as coach).

Yamato Tamura (yes, that Yamato Tamura: ex-assistant coach of Mie Hamada, professional skater cast at BEYOND and Everlasting33) joins Mihoko Higuchi as Head Coach and Technical Guidance.

But having a jump coach is just what LYS needs…mh, with Yamada here, perhaps there’s prospect to invite Mao as choreographer (I know Higuchi Sensei has her unique take on choreography…)

Not about the jump coach, but from their website they seem to be committed in making Niigata their main base and leave Nagoya (Aichi, really, considering where Moricoro is) as a branch. Niigata is quite far from Nagoya, where the ex-students are staying (and have schools at).

But like you said a jump coach is what LYS needs (and honestly having Mihoko and Yamato under one roof is a heck lot of fabulousness). I guess some fans are surprised because Yamato is expected to be the head coach at Mao rink in Tachikawa...?

Also I just realized that this means the ex-right hand woman and man of Yamada and Hamada are teaming up 🤣
