2025 GP Finlandia Trophy Rhythm Dance

I don't know why anyone is surprised by these levels? Same caller as Skate America and just like at that event almost everyone got level 1s on their steps. The calling has been very strict at the GPs except for the calling at GP France. Imho, the judging at GP France was much more problematic than this. At that event, the panel was clearly making an effort to drop certain teams. Here they were harsh to all. I think the changes to the way turns are being judged in combination with the BPM requirement is just too hard. So, the rules about turns need to be changed imho. But, the technical panel should enforce the rules as written, that's their job and Shawn Rettstatt like Shin Amano always does his job mercilessly.

Sure but what do you make of the calling of a choreo element.

Or the choreography needs to be clearer?
Isn't that why they disclose their elements beforehand? Why wait until their last GP to say no? You cannot be creative in this way; it confuses us into thinking it's an element. Is professionalism too much to ask for? They spoke up pretty clearly in the beginning that the Depeche Mode music was released in 1989, even though the album was released in 1990. However, no one noticed the very first piece of choreography that they did. That's very strange.

Sure but what do you make of the calling of a wolf element.
It's happened to many teams before just, usually, not high levels ones. It's on the team to make their elements clear. Their opening choreo is too close to the requirements for a choreo sequence. Ice Dance panels aren't going to call elements based on planned content. They call it as they see it. So make it clear.

FB/ C get high GOE on lifts that would get +0 /1 if anyone else did them. Why is that? Oh right reputational judging but you like it when it works from your faves, right?
two different things, C/B also shouldnt get high goe for twizzles or steps...top teams in ice dance get high goe for everything
Shawn is very strict to non american couples..
He was seen handing a piece of paper to to MF after watching C/B practice at SA,

I am hoping for a technically knowledgeable ice dance poster to explain technically why Piper got a “b” for her twizzles. I can usually see errors on twizzles and saw the one “check” she did on the second set but what else did she do or fail to do? I would understand a level 3 but a “b” means she did not satisfy a single level requirement, right? I would love for Mark H to have let us know but he seemed to be heavily editing his commentary.

I love ice dance but the tech scoring today is leaving a bad taste in my mouth, even though Mark suggested this would make more people watch it. I doubt it, Mark

Did you see the levels the Americans got in the rhythm dance at Skate America? 😂 What are you talking about? Check your bias. Anyway, I don't care who wins. I just want equal calling for all. Shawn Rettstatt is harsh to all. You like it when C/B get level 1 but not FBS/C. As I said above, I think the current rules are too harsh and should be changed but you can't fault Shawn for doing his job and following the rules.

Agreed.. I suggested exactly this in a previous post. But if it were so unclear that it didn't have all the necessary features to the point of getting a ! , perhaps the tech panel could think about it twice, especially when it is not the first time it has been presented... And sure, they judge what happens on the ice but the planned content with choreo element is not like a planned jump in singles

It’s a shame Piper messed up her twizzles. The base call is crazy but even so she still would have lost at least a level. But they could have still been leading 😭
Exactly! I have seen plenty of dance teams over the years make the exact same error that Piper made on her twizzles and never once in my 34 years of watching have I seen any skater receive a BASE level on the twizzle sequence. I could see the case for her level dropping to a 3 or even a 2 if we’re being critical, but a base call was, well, baseless. The tech panel here clearly had an agenda against both F-B/C AND G/P.

What i don't understand why all this top team can not do clean turns , and if they can not do clean turns why are they skating skills mark so high .Sibs with a 7 year off still can do clean turns

Interesting

The best explanation I've seen is on the Skating Session on YouTube. They showed that there was a way to get to a b, but it would involve the callers being extra picky and even then they weren't as picky on the twizzles for others. They thought a level 1 was more appropriate.

Laurence's costume is awful. I quite like Gui's gloves though.
I saw this (though it's hard for me to get rerun streams at the minute, I'll try tomorrow, I found some pictures on getty) and agree. Her costume is awful without being amusing, and why does she keep screwing up her nose and face like all the audience are unwashed and smell funny?

The scores and the shennanigans we are not seeing behind the scenes, there is a WHOLE lotta that going on. The half has not been told.
