Wow. Japan's men is so up and down.hwell: . I do think that they have a good chance to move up in the rankings. The only skaters in the top 10 that can maintain their current position right now are Yuzuru/Denis/Javier/Han Yan/Sergey. The rest either don't have a quad (Misha/Brown) or don't have the consistency (Brezina, Amodio) or PCS (Nam).

Would love Joshua and Bychenko to move up as well.

What a disastrous men's competition over all again. Since the technical controller for the men's event is famous, Alexander Lakernik, I should have not be surprised.

Hanyu as usual is way overscored and Javi should've led the short. However, I would not pretend to be surprised since I've followed the men's event. I wish I would not know of this discipline at all. Kovtun's PCS over both Farris and Yan with fantastic skating skills? Ridiculous. Voronov increased his PCS with the performance. Just wow. I highly think of Kozuka's skating skills, but how could be the PCS awarded to him with THAT performance as goes to Mura. Just shameful. I'm so disappointed in not only their performances but also the judges' judgement over the skaters' scores in general.

The music error occurred for D10 is weird. How can this thing happened in the high-level competition? I felt really sorry for him although I do not consider myself as his fan yet. The only good thing for me in the event is that the French guys have a better chance for keeping the World 2 spots.

That only applies if you are the only skater/couple from your country competing. EX: France got 3 ID spot with Papdakis/Cizeron winning the championship. (Ironically had the French fed bothered to send another dance pair...that wouldn't have happened --- or it would have been less likely that second couple would have finished in the top 12).

That would be placing 1 or 2 correct? I've never had to worry so much about a country with so much depth in a field losing 3 spots so I only knew the general details

Among fishermen, the Tairyō-ki (大漁旗 Good Catch Flag?) represents their hope for a good catch of fish. Actually, this is not　旭日旗 (kyokujitsu-ki): Japanese navy's flag, but 大漁旗 (tairyo-bata): traditional flag to wish great catch of fish, which fishers fly on their fish boats.　　　I suppose no Japanese image "Japanese empire" with this flag.

It happens. I know it happened to Max Aaron the year he won nationals (I think with him they may have played his other program's music). And I know Keven Reynolds had it happen with Black Betty at at least once that I have seen (can't recall if it was nationals of 4CC). I am sure others can list many other times it happens.

I think last year I complained about judges giving him comparable scores in SS to Patrick but he has improved. I remember after the Olympics he stated he knew that he still had a lot to improve and he's been really working at it. He also mentioned that he was considering taking ballet earlier in the season to improve his posture

Now back to MEN'S skating

I was going to bring up something along these lines. My wife and son are of Japanese ancestry, and we have lived in Japan before returning to the States... and what I'm reading here does not jive with my own experiences.

The Rising Sun Flag pre-dates WWII by a lot. It's not a WWII flag... it's sort of a national historic emblem. It is still used on Japanese ships. US sailors, army types, and airmen are stationed in Japan, and they use it as part of their uniform emblems. Not on a t-shirt around town... but as part of the uniform.

It is interesting how this discussion has gone... I had no idea it was an issue in other parts of the world.

I've checked the protocols and I seriously don't see where Hanyu has been over-scored or Javier disadvantaged: Hanyu's jump's layout enables him to gather more points than Javier (he has two jump passes in the second half while Javier has only one), his 3A was to die for while Javier did have a difficult take off, he definitely is the better spinner of the two and the sharpness and the speed of his skating today was quite impressive. Javier skated with ease and a lot of presence on the ice but if you look at the details Hanyu has the edge.

And here all of Team Japan fans were worrying about the womens when we should have really been worrying about the men!! This season has been too weird. We need a fresh start ASAP.

They should have sent Daisuke or Shoma instead of Kozuka and Mura.

Please let me excuse about the flag.

If you talking about the flag with red and yellow rising sun, it is not “the rising sun flag", which Japanese Imperial army　had used during WW2.

“The rising sun flag” has to be white and red, just same as national flag, but that one in the video was yellow and red and some characters on it.

The flag is one of “Tairyo-bata(大漁旗)”, which is traditional Japanese fisherman's flags, originally flown by boats to signify a large catch of fish, and often used sports event as a banner.There are various designs for the Tairyo-bata, and that rising-sun is just one of the symbol along with wave, fishes, and sea weeds, etc., as you can see here.

About that flag in the video, I can see the “Onagawa(女川)”, the name of the Tsunami attacked city on the flag, so that flag must be used for one of the ships destroyed in there.
I think, people with the flag just want to encourage Hanyu and also people in Tsunami-striken area, and have no idea to humiliate people in China or Korea. (but I admit it is naïve to use that rising-sun design in China.)
