2018 Olympic Figure Skating Free Dance

Tessa and Scott: The greatest of all time.
Papadakis and Cizeron: Great performance today, but did anyone else feel like they didn't quite have the crowd reaction and moment everyone was foreshadowing from this routine? I think unfortunately Moonlight Sonata peaked at the French Grand Prix, and although the scores got higher and higher with every competition, the magic of the performance stagnated. However they still received the highest score of all time and perfect 10's in PE and IN, so what am I talking about :scratch2:? Looking into the next quad, they really have no rival--I hope this leads them to diversify their program themes and take more risk.

ShibSibs: Happy for them.
Hubbell/Donohue: Love these two, but they messed it up again in the biggest competition of their lives. They should finally medal at Worlds.
Chock/Bates: Devastated for them.

Muramoto/Reed: Hope these two keep going! Very enjoyable to watch them today.

For the third event in a row, the GOAT has brought it home. Does this mean Carolina Kostner will win in a couple days?!

GOATs? What about Torvill and Dean in dance, Gordeeva and Ginkov (and the Protopopovs) in Pairs (and other who are IMO better than Aliona and Bruno, like Shen and Zhao), Dick Button, Yagudin, Plushenko and even Kurt Browning, with no Olympic medals in men's? And Carolina GOAT???

Scott pretty much confirming what we all know. Virtue and Moir are done. No worlds:

”We knew we had to come out strong. We just have to control what we do. It comes down to style. We are done, I don’t have to look at the breakdown anymore.”

I said exactly the same thing in another post! They really stood out from the pack for me tonight. I hope the judges took note and we will maybe see a better result for them at worlds. I'm also in love with her new dress. Stunning.

Talk about looking regal and one of a kind - both Piper's dresses were original, sophisticated, with amazing appliques that caught all the light perfectly. Her styling is always a top-notch!

Marie France could not hold back her emotions for a second. I do not think that P/C like that.

Must be so hard for a coach with two teams at the Top.

Nevertheless it is time for P/C to walk new roads with another coaching team.

I don't know if without the costume malfunction if P/C will still be able to win. The difference is 0.8 points. It seemed that even with the costume malfunction, they were marked generously to make their scores closer to V/M. Without the costume malfunction, I don't think P/C would score that much higher than last night b/c the judges wouldn't feel that they have to be generous with the marks to make their scores close to V/M. That's my rationale for making me feel better that P/C lost to V/M. I was hoping that P/C would win and who knows what would happen in the next four years. Other teams may catch up to them or injuries may make them unable to compete in the next Olympics, etc..

Very gracious quote from Guillaume Cizeron:

💬 “It was a very emotional moment and we are very proud of our #silver medal. We knew that if we wanted to win we had to deliver a perfect performance. But Tessa and Scott were better.”

Generous. More generous than a certain other skater would have been if it had been the other way round (I do recall 4 years ago).

Yup, we both made it out of ice dance just barely alive. Now I’m wide awake and giddy when I should be tired, and newdaughter is currently beating me up from the inside. Hopefully we can survive the final rodeo in ladies!

New daughter is gonna be ShomaDaughter, isn't it? :P

I was just surprised to read that! Canada is a waaaay bigger figure skating country than France, isn't it? I have the impression that most people in France don't care about figure skating at all, whereas it's one of the biggest sports in Canada.

I wouldn't presume to guess how the average person in France feels about skating, but they do have a pretty decent pedigree in the sport (Anassina /Peizerat, Delobel/Schoenfelder, Pechelat/Bourzat, Candeloro, Joubert).

Skating has a pretty good fan base in Canada, but it's not hockey...(then again, nothing is).

That would probably be a scandal unless Alina messes up.. Especially Carolina can you imagine with a TES in the low 60s winning OGM...

Caro would have to nail her elements to have a chance, including a 3+3 and 2A+3 which is definitely a long shot. But with the exception of pairs, I can see a pattern where the long time top contender has lost ground to a rival at the last minute but managed to come back and win after all (Hanyu injured and Chen winning GPF; V/M losing to P/C in the GPF. Both ended up with the OGM). So if this holds true then Evgenia will pull off a win over Alina in ladies, having just recently lost to her at Euros.

Hm. Sounds like another team from four years ago...

I just hope P/C take the high road and either stick with D/L in Montreal (they were there first, after all) or change graciously.
Unlike some people.

Aaaaahh PapaCiz, thank you. Best of the night  Who cares about a costume malfunction when you skate like that ? Amazing. This is why I love Ice Dance so much :yahoo:

Tessa & Scott were so good tonight, the best performance of all season and I could not be happier for them ! They've really pushed themselves into this comeback and truly are one of the best team ever :hap10:
NOW, if V/M want to surpass Torvill&Dean, do it the Torvill&Dean way : they did not stop after their competitive success, bringing so much to the sport. Choreographing, teaching, etc. I know there is no professional circuit anymore but they should use their popularity to bring more ! (But enjoy first being famous for quite some time  They deserve it).
I could see Scott being a coach and Tessa being a choreographer, my main goal of course is to have Marie-France and Tessa doing a program for P/C

Shibs were so good. The best they EVER skated emotionally. Hats off, I was so happy for them. Too bad H/D made too many mistakes though. But that's fine, they are competiting for a medal in a month  And they have come such a long way. And SO incredibly heartbroken for Maddie & Evan. Their FD is so lovely. :(

Schoked by how much I just like Bobrova/SOloviev FD. So good. Felt like a minute only.

I wonder what the future holds for Kaitlyn and Andrew. I'm glad they kept it together and delivered a strong performance.

Anna&Luca were so lovely too, they'll make us cry in Milano :sad21:

In terms of pedigree, yes that's true. And don't forget Surya Bonaly!

But I think they have a very hard time filling the stands at the Grand Prix event, and outside of P/C the average French person wouldn't be able to name another skater today. There's no comparison in TV coverage either. My mother-in-law can almost never find figure skating on TV when I ask her about it.

I don't think it's easy to find bigger figure skating countries than Japan and Canada.

It has been an amazing night of skating. Full of drama and intrigue.

The right team won the gold. I might have given the free dance to virtue and moir by a smidge but they had a lead and that lead should have been substantially more . I can only imagine if PC had won by a point or less and how the generous sd scores would come back to haunt the sympathetic judges.

The French were classy in defeat and they did win silver. Awesome. Davis and White made the right decision in not returning they would have been third.

So happy for the Shibsibs. I do wonder if they will continue. Their perch in the US seems precarious and in the world not much better. I suppose if the French retire alongwith the Canadians they would stay at least a year but I think the French will stay because right now there seems tobe no real challenger. The parsonsare a bro and sister team with limitations. Hubbell and Donahoe are good but not sure they have enough if they can't even consistently win in the US. Gilles and Poirier are not aloved team. I expect Kaitlyn and Andrew to maybe retire or skate on but not a real challenge - though it would not surprise me that they could beat some of those American/Russians and Italians.

I know we should be celebrating the Olympics but looking at worlds I see Canada and Russia possibly destroying each other's chances for three teams. They both will be on the cusp without V and M.

To me V\m and p\c are bothchampions.

I thought V/M outskated P/C by a lot in the short program,,, they should not have scored so close to V/M.

It is nice to see that after an entire season of Scott and Tessa
wanting to die in the Kiss&Cry

They finally look ecstatic

Yes, for sure. Like Scott said, finally no need to look at the breakdowns, they can just ride the high and enjoy having given their last competitive program. Am very happy for them.

It's telling that 4 years after Sochi people still believe that Marina Zoueva did Tessa & Scott a disservice by choreographing that Seasons FD but there are also people who still have their knickers in knots that they called her out for that.

Get over it.

Congrats to all the teams, especially the top 12. It was really unfortunate to see Zach's errors and Chock/Bates' fall. C/B's fall looked so painful. Hopefully they can go clean at Worlds and redeem themselves.

Hurtado/Khaliavin and Gilles/Poirier had two of the best dances out of the top 5 for me. So engaging. G/P in particular really improved this FD. Sara and Kirill were outstanding for me - costume, choreography, emotion. Spain needs to have more than 1 ice dance spot at ISU events ASAP.

Kana and Chris came back strong after that unfortunate fall in the FD during the team event. They created a beautiful moment.

I'm disappointed for Penny and Nick. Right after they got their scores Penny was like, "But this is the best we've skated this FD all year." They're another team I hope does better at Worlds. And for next season I'd like them to try different choreographers.

The Shibutanis are a great example of perserverance. They should be role models for younger teams stuck in the logjam of US ice dance.

Happy to see Min/Gamelin have their moment in front of the home crowd. They may just inspire a new generation of young skaters in South Korea to take up ice dance. :)

The gold medal, despite the supposed PCS deficiency of V/M, came down to levels. The only team to get all level 4 elements over the entire event was Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir. Largely in part due to having gotten feedback in the Team Event where they did not get those levels. And the work of Patrice Lauzon.

Gadbois is still the top of the ice dance world. Now let's see next season which teams decide to relocate there. I predict the very entertaining Chinese team of Wang/Liu.
