2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team Event Day 3

I'm sorry, but that is not a 90 TES worthy skate. That is not a beats Kolyada and Rippon skate. If he leads and he probably will, you might as well just hand the medals to Canada on a platter.

Patrick has been winning with messy skates for like 7 years now. All I can do is roll my eyes at this point

As he has his entire career. Pops, falls, URs, just your typical winning Chan LP....

I thought Patrick deserved the gold in 2014, but tonight I feel like he and the OAR should have been behind Adam

Yes, but Patrick just proved that he, and probably Carolina, will be held up no matter what. Bleagh.

So Rippon would have won this competition had there been any sort of proper judging whatsoever. Italy is unnecessarily close to the US, because of Chan and Kolyada being scored the way they were. Really poor showing by the judges.

__________________________

Admittedly, this was not at all a great performance by Chan. Nevertheless, I completely agree with Mista Ekko's sentiment:

Name one person from the other 4 who should've been above [Patrick] though...

Clearly, even when he misses his jumps, Chan's edgework, transitions and skating skills are superior to the other four skaters! Of course, you can argue his 'performance' scores should be lower (due to the 'screw-ups') and maybe also the choreography/interpretation scores. But overall for components, he's still miles ahead of the others; including Kolyada (especially when you factor in Kolyada's messy and uninspired performance tonight).

Then, consider the fact that in this new era of "quads, quads, quads", Chan is the only one who delivered multiple quads (including one in combo with a triple); as compared to Kolyada who managed just one; and none ('zero') by the other three competitors.

Yes indeed ... Chan won the "battle of the quads" in this round! [A sentence I though I'd never say again after 2014!]

So, all-in-all, if you consider Patrick's performance — both the technical & components — versus the messy performances of Kolyada and Tanaka; and the lack of *technical content* by Rippon and Rizzo, I don't see a mathematical argument for Patrick not winning (despite the very underwhelming skate he put out there!)

* Oh, and by *technical content* I mean a lack of even an attempt at doing the 'all-important' QUADS. Yes, that's QUADS plural ... since as I have come to understand over the past few years, at least 2+ quads are what is now REQUIRED to be the men's champion?!?

I think of it as Mirai securing the medal for team USA rather than Carolina losing it. Think about how many people had already handed Mirai 5th place before the event even started.

Zhenya die-hards: are we panicking or nah?

Yes. WTT scoring was outrageous and will not happen at the Olympics. Zagitova's base, with landings not as good as Euros, is now 158 with a PCS of 75. A clean Zagitova is now untouchable. Medvedeva needs a fall from her.

I actually have to disagree with Ashley's comments and I usually hate backloaded programs. But I do not get bored at all with the program and the beginning keeps me interested. For me, it's as good as a backloaded program can be.

I also disagree with Ashley. Why does she always have to hate on someone? Alina used the music quite well.

I wouldn't give it the benefit of being called "Backloaded"

It's "Front empty"

Alina's program is working for me, much more than before because backloading was kinda new.
Someone tell Ashley that how you might win (and thus get an Olympic spot). It might not work for her, but it's athletically so demanding, too much even. I'm okay to see diversity in singles actually. Some backload, some don't...
Plus musicality is a big plus in this FP, really well used.

So I go away and Mirai slays and the US pulls away::biggrin:

I did like the horse race better, but good for her.

I have a question here.
This scoring really looked like they were pushing USA up as much as possible.
Caro got some low PCs (i mean, we have seen her spending half of the FS on her behind and still getting 75+, this could be 10 across the boards).
Tons of tech calls except for Mirai - yeah she skated well, but considering how judges called everybody else, i wonder if she didnt deserve a carrot or two.

Is this just me?

Well, maybe panel was trying to make up for the travesty of scoring Kolyada ahead of Adam.:palmf:

I think Alina's PCS rise has been the fastest in the history of figure skating. From Junior to beating Carolina's PCS by almost a full point, all in one season with the same program :rolleye:

Med isn’t quite Michelle Kwan, but Zagi is definitely Tara Lipinski. My preference is clear. Zhenya for gold!!!!

I do agree that this is clever and well done program in spite of the back-loading. Alina's energy and presence combines well with the excitement and kitschy-ness of the music.

But it's still not a great program by any means. If this is as good as it gets for back-loaded programs then we're in trouble here :/
