According to the post, they are aiming to explore "lyrical hip-hop" as well as "Whacking".

Context (from wiki):

In the early 1970s a dance style known as punking emerged, with "punk" being a derogatory term for gay men at the time. The term "whack" was a specific movement within the punking style which involved moving the arms over the head in a rhythmic fashion. Although the wider club-going community took part in punking, they did not want the dance to have negative connotations attached to it and therefore renamed the genre "Waackin". Later, Jeffery Daniel added the "g" to waackin to make it "waacking", the name by which the style is commonly known today. The terms 'Whacking' and 'Wacking' are also occasionally used to refer to the dance style.

Wish they'd added vogue instead of lyrical hip hop though, never like that stuff.

Anyway, this sounds like a club dance, and it will be fun to see it. No tech panel/group of judges would have the guts to withhold levels, GOE from or give a music penalty to P&C because of this.

Lyrical hip hop is supposed to be a "commercialised" offshoot of hip hop. Basically adding more jazz technique and making it more "palatable" for certain audiences, and doing it to pop songs. So it's not really hip hop or street dance (doesn't share the same cultural origins as hip hop and much of street dance, nor the sensibility), but it's in the mainstream and has been around long enough to be considered so. I guess it'd be easier translate that to the ice than actual hip hop.

Yes, I believe it is inherently easier on ice than street hip hop Less staccato, so more easy to demonstrate clear edges using it.

Sounds perilously close to the easy listening version of it...

But what the heck! I still want to see it.

honeslty i'd lose my mind if someone did soul ii soul back to life. i characterise that as hiphop....... I don't think hiphop needs to necessaily mean rapping. I would say Justify My Love was hiphop in terms of rhythm.

To me hiphop is about rhythm derived from the sampling of Clyde Stubblefield on Funky Drummer, and some other rhythms that were multiply sampled.

Sure, but I was talking about my dislike for the dance style Hip hop music might not necessarily mean rapping, but I sure do hope to see actual hip hop dance even if done to some random pop music and not watered down "lyrical hip hop"

Yeah, I guess. Actually, maybe it will be more jazz-funk or commercial instead of "lyrical hip hop" listening to the tracks. Waacking to this music I guess can be done, but would have liked a nod to its disco origins. Still, vogue + waacking would have been cool, but I'll stop before I see the program

I am always glad of outside input.....the notion that skaters are having street dance/hip hop dances done without reference to specialists.........

It depends on the team & the school. Davis & White and Virtue & Moir often hired specialists for input about particular rhythms/dance styles. And so have teams training in Montreal. Whether P&C do, I do not know, but if we get an interview with them, we will ask, because it is always an interesting question.

I would also love it if someone used Soul II Soul's "Back to Life." Not sure why, but the first team I thought of that I think would do well with it are Green / Parsons.

Kim Gingras I think was on the Canadian version of So You Think You Can Dance, but I'm not looking her dances up)

Kim was a contestant on season 2 of SYTYCD Canada, where she was paired with Canadian figure skater Emanuel Sandhu for this jazz/funk performance. I am not sure if Kim has any previous experience choreographing on the floor or on the ice, but she has established a strong career in commercial dancing to the required rhythms for this season. For instance, she has toured extensively with Beyoncé, and has also performed as a backup dancer with J Lo and Justin Timberlake.

Thanks! I was actually (not) going to look up her solos - that's where you see the self-choreography, and the choreographic talent - but since that season was so long ago, the information wouldn't have mattered (and hence me not looking it up haha). I'm glad she's worked with the mentioned singers. Clearly, she must be talented at commercial, jazz funk, and "lyrical hip hop". (She outperformed Sandhu by quite a lot there, btw)
