I pray someone does... because I don't think I could stand the hate Zhenya S will get if he goes. It will be unbearable.

They'll make him wish he was never born, let alone put on a pair of skates.

😔
Nobody is going to do that. Everyone is disappointed, because for a day everyone hoped for the guys to be on the podium. And Mozalev carried the last chance to get the second medal—and he didn’t. Unfortunately, he missed that medal precisely because of the initial reason quoted for not taking him, the lack of experience. He didn’t fall, he didn’t have the acumen to minimize the pop damage. He had enough to deliver all the other jumps.

The focus will be on Kondratyuk, and how they should have sent Kolyada, because this time they finished worse than in 2020. Mozalenko will split the blame. That’s why I am wondering that if any substitute happens, it would be veteran Samarin.

Kolyada survived 2018. I don’t believe for a moment people will be as up in arms about Semenenko or Mozalev bombing at the Olympics. Especially because they will not really be a part of the TE or go as first skater.

Kondratyuk, now, that’s the skater who needs to be prepared.

Kondriatuk victory is the best thing that could happen to Kolyada because now the whole country has 2 skaters to bet on equally, the same as in ladies, the same as in dance and in pairs (although there are 3 there) With that he frees himself immense pressure...

I think he’s in a better position now, but not by much. If he falters again, and the results of the TE are not up to par, he will get the same, or worse than he got in 2018. People are expecting the gold in the TE, although the chances are much higher this time than back then, and there’s no such close battle between Eteri’s 1 and 2.

Do you guys know if RusFed ever had done what USFS did with Brown-Malinin, when one got Oly, the other—Worlds, and right away? Given how close Mozalenko is, could they just do that and spare adolescents’ nerves?

I don’t think it makes sense to decide the Worlds team now, especially because the Euros team might be the one to go to Worlds in the end. Kolyada is injured, we don’t know how it is for sure. He might retire after the Olympics. We also don’t know. There will be more than a month before one and the other. They might announce a team and it will change.

I’m not completely sure they are that pressed to decide on guy number 3.

I just feel it had dragged on far enough, and from mental health perspective it might be better. Works for Americans and Japanese just fine.

This made me laugh. When did Russia ever cared for the mental health of one skater? I don’t think they’ll start doing that too soon.
I think it impacts both of them negatively, and they don’t have 5 others to replace them in line. Unless Aliev, Samsonov and Danielian are expected to make a recovery by next season.

Of course it does. But I don’t think for a minute they are in the business of caring for the skaters. They haven’t shown that they care at all.

I’m also sure they don’t expect anyone to make a comeback any time soon. It’s literally take what they can get.

Well, I care a great deal. Anyway, judging from Davydenko’s interview, Mozalev is going to Krasnoyarsk camp (pre-Olympic, thanks goodness, lol) where they will continue to work hard and hope, so no early decision was made. I dunno if there is enough hugs in the world for these guys.

So how exciting was the FS yesterday? And all three Russian lads among the top five, with Mark of course taking the top spot. :party2:
Looks like that after Euros it will be off to the pre-Olympic training camp in Krasnoyarsk for all of them. I wonder if RusFed will bring Gumennik and Samarin in as well. Just one alternate seems risky in these times we live in. But Samarin is also entered for Sofia Trophy from 1st-6th February (which of course doesn't mean he'll necessarily show up there).
Also, I understand the benefits of having all the skaters train together before the Olys. There are still some undecided third spots and I guess RusFed will use this as some kind of closed test skates. But then again, if just one coach, skater, or official tests positive, won't that put the whole Russian team at risk? Scary thought....

It is super-risky, particularly with Omicron, but they will be the same way in Beijing I assume. They better start liking each other, because for like next few weeks, they are not going to be seeing other people. My guess would be Samarin would be there, not sure about Gumennik…

@CrazyKittenLady tipped me off that the decision is coming on the 20th. I think it could be later, because some sources say that the all-important counsel will take place in the 20-ish, so basically, they could be deciding as they are packing them all off to Beijing. So, yeah, stalemate will continue for a while yet.

So, guys, I am going to call it here, just to see if I am right. The team will be:

Kolyada, Kondratyuk and Samarin. Kinda curious it’s see if I am right. 😅

It'll be much worse. Now Kolyada is hated before he ever sets foot on the Olympic ice. People are up in arms about how he should under no circumstances be put in the team event because he doesn't deserve it. I say let Kondratiuk deal with this, he is young and inexperienced so they can only place so much blame on him. Of course he has hardly done enough in his career to deserve an Olympic gold either, but you could argue none of the Russian men have and someone needs to skate the damn thing or none of the deserving skaters will get theirs.
