2022 Olympics: Women's Free Skate

Srsly, Did Trusova really flip the bird during the stuffy ceremony? I just saw a screen cap, and I hope that was a fluke.

It may have been intentional or unintentional, I've had a few instances where I'm holding something and then I see a picture and how I'm holding the object has inadvertently prominently displayed the middle finger.

had her break down behind the scenes, where tbh, we shouldn’t have seen it, then did what was expected of her on the podium

Shades of Slutskaya in 2006 (famously filmed... in a huff after her bronze finish). She vented and fumed in what should be a non-broadcast area and then behaved appropriately during the medal ceremony.

Just like they kicked journalists out of the kiss and cry years ago I think they need a no-filming policy where cameras won't memorialize these moments.

Johnny knows Russian and he said he feels Trusova is upset for getting silver and not the gold, rather than being upset for Valieva. As Trusova was skating, the following comments were made by Tara and Johnny:

Tara: I don't think she cares to pretend that the component score matters for her program, the focus is all on her jumps.
Johnny: She makes zero effort at artistry. You've got to have the combination of both in this sport.

Yup, she did flip the bird. Any respect I had for her just flew out the window. If I were the IOC, she wouldn't be getting any medal after that display of poor sportsmanship. It's one thing to have a meltdown backstage, but you DO NOT go in front of the cameras in an official ceremony and make that gesture.

I don't think it was flipping the bird. Or maybe I am giving her the benefit of the doubt.

I know she had the mother of all meltdowns but I have seen plenty of people have their middle finger positioned like that unknowingly.

So rinkside is now a no-go for cameras? Because that's were Trusova had part of her meltdown/tantrum (whichever way people want to categorize it). Agree backstage they should have a spot of skaters can have that moment to compose, but this is an event with times for ceremonies, when they told her she needed to go out for the ceremony there was a point it hit excessive beside the rink for the crying and going in the corner, etc.

Trusova should quit skating and go into acting. That was some performance! I could not believe my eyes at what was happening!

One of the few times I've found the pair speak some wisdom. Otherwise, it's me-me-me.

Think You’re taking about Surya bonaly, who didn’t like her medal walked off threw medal in trash

What a mess. I’ve watched this sport since 1998 Nagano and today was the worst one.
Also so disappointed by judging system, it’s even not consistent. No call on Anna’s edge, Anna was on fire tonight but I don’t know how can this happen.
I think the worst one was 2014 when Adelina won.

What calls? I can only refer to the Swedish Eurosport commentators who has been excellent during these games and has a lot of technical insight. A coach and a former figure skater. They thought that Anna's skate was fantastic, and had no errors, but they pointed out that maybe her 3S was a q. Something that wouldn't have mattered in the long run.
I don’t know, but I find it hard to credit that 30 women skate twice, all receiving calls, except for one that is not called even once.

Anna won already
She does not need a second chance, and he's telling the girls to not abandon their dream
I think this it the meaning and possibly one of the most gracious post by EP
And maybe a subtle invitation to join his group? It's either him or Davydov...

I'm watching the replay right now. As she is holding that thing in her hands, yes, her middle finger on her left hand is forward with the tip on the object, but would I say with certainty she is flipping the bird? No. But knowing her, she might milk it for what it's worth after the fact. Just have to wait and see what kind of nonsense ensues.

So you wanted the IOC to continue like nothing happened? That is nothing short of wishful thinking.

If you think this has been the end of Kamila's Olympics glory, just think for a moment the amount of damage this has done to the sport itself.
Huh? That is not what I said. To help you understand my point, I will rephrase it. I believe one of the commentators on US Tv made a similar point.

If the goal of decision to allow her to skate was to prevent harm, it backfired, and the situation unraveled. I think psychologically, it would have been less harmful to Valieva if she didn’t have to compete.

No that was worlds in 1994 (after Lillehammer). She didn't want to get on the platform for a long time and then took the medal off right away.
I think she would have had a better point in 1993 worlds where she had one of her best skates ever but newcomer Baiul was placed above her for reasons that I still don't understand...

I was surprised when Johnny finally let on what she was really saying. At first I thought she was upset about Kamila, and the Kamila situation probably playing heavily into everyone's emotional reactions today, so I'd give Sasha a break because it's been a long, hard couple of weeks - but if her state was mainly about coming in second to Anna, I have to think she will someday regret her behavior. Much as I enjoyed the five quads, and I did, the dog free program was a regression in her artistry versus last season. Even if she had kept the Game of Thrones program from TWO years ago and done five quads she might have been standing on top, but her spins were slower, and there wasn't much else there today, other than jumps. Anna's all-around excellence prevailed again. She might not be the best skater in history, the best jumper or the best artist, but I think she is the best competitor we've ever seen in women.

The right skater won, but my favorite skates today came from women in the over-20 age demographic. One way or another - either raising the age limit or tweaking the judging system - it's time to outgrow the sport's unhealthy preoccupation with little stick-legged girls who can rotate fast.

Sotnikova may have been out of the spotlight.......but clearly crooked judging is what gave Sotnikova the gold. No comparison here at all.

Yes, the judging was shady (Kostner should have won IMO, even though tons of folks say it was Kim who deserved it), but credit to Adelina - she skated the best she ever has and had a slight error. The PCS/GOE was a joke, but she wouldn't have got the gold if she hadn't skated as she did -- she still needed to stay on her feet, etc. to make a case for overscoring her to gold.

Here, however it's a different scenario in that Anna was clean in both programs, and had wins/momentum going in, being the reigning world champion. I don't think anyone can call Anna a sleeper who delivered. We all knew if Valieva did poorly, next in line was likely Anna... unless Trusova did 5 quads. Trusova did so but made errors and bad decisions (going after the 3A), and Anna was clean so Sasha's 251 wasn't enough even though in any normal competition it would easily win (would have won WC2021 by 18 points).

Can someone help me and translate Plushys Instagram-post?

Because my automatic translation suggest that "I´m more than sure that for Sasha and Kami this is not the last olympic games". Did he really say that? He doesn´t believe that Anna will be at the next OG? But there could be there are som words lost in Translation... Or maybe he said that because for Sasha and Kami this was so disappointing, it was just such a strange phrase...

Nothing new here, he’s just saying he was right to predict in 2010 Vancouver that future in women’s will be quads etc good wishes congrats and that Sasha and Kami will skate at another Olympics

1993 was the year Bonaly had more of a case to be salty about it.

She has since realized and acknowledged the poor form for doing that.

Trusova is a brat for the meltdown, but I get where she's coming from, always coming just short. You would think getting 251 points would be enough. She said herself, I thought if I did the quads, I will win. Someone must have ingrained that attitude in her (not saying it's Plushenko... but not saying it isn't!).
