You need to take a closer look at the slo mo. It was under a Q, so technically clean. Perfectly backwards? NoNot it wasn't. It was fully under. Thorngren was the only one in the top 5 with a clean combo.

I read somewhere on twitter that Alysa talked about her coach change a couple weeks ago. She told reporter that she was "traumatized" for coach change initially but now is all good. It gave me impression that coach change is NOT her idea at all. It seems to me that she is being "forced" to skate at this point. Papa Liu wants her to be the next Michelle Kwan. It's likely that she may take a break or even retire after this season. Not winning a Championship is actually a good thing for Alysa. I hope Papa Liu can wake up and stop from controlling his daughter's fate. Alysa needs time to adjust to "coach change" and Papa Liu won't be able to see improvement in just a few weeks. I still think Alysa should go back to the old coach (Massimo Scali and Jeremy Abbott) who were doing wonder for Alysa in early season.I just think this is so interesting (and though I hadn’t learned how to insert media I can’t get it to work right now) where Alysa says “skating is her hobby.” I would not think an elite skater would think of skating as their hobby. She also says in another tweet that her goal isn’t to beat the Russians. What do y’all make of this?
Quite a few people would call her delusional for daring to say things like she hopes to compete with the Russians, or criticize her coaching/training choices if she said skating was the most important thing in her life. I'm sad that she has to make these kind of statements so people stop putting pressure on her, and based on last night's performance there seems to be a spark missing that was there only a few months ago. Hopefully she will skate better today and medal, because it would be a pity if she could just sleepwalk her way onto the Olympic team on the basis of one high, early-season score that she could not duplicate with her current form.Actually, it's good for her to realize that "beating Russians" is not a goal for her and it should not be a goal for any US skater. The only person who can beat Russians are just Russians themselves. If she still think "skating is just a hobby", I think it is a positive sign.
Alysa's was clean. Mariah's, too.
You’ll be happy to know she’s withdrawn because of COVID.Mariah got through her combo but it wasn't exactly clean. Definitely lacking some rotation and a shaky landing edge with no flow out.
Alysa's combo was at least 1/4 short, as always.
You’ll be happy to know she’s withdrawn because of COVID.
You won’t have to vomit. Why would I be happy about that.
You won’t have to vomit.
P.S.: also I can't help but chuckle when commentator on Olympic channel stream (idk his name) started to praise Levito as being so strong especially because she got "first place at JGP event where only Russians are usually dominating - and that says a lot". I am pretty sure he knew perfectly well that Levito was first only because the Russians were denied to entry that exact event - but why tell that to viewers, right? ))
Welcome to Golden Skate! Post long and post often!Question, please?
When Alysa Liu switched coaches this season, did she also change ice surfaces? Did she move from a rink in the Bay Area to Broadmoor or do I not have my facts straight? How many top skaters trained at her rink before the switch?
I think Mariah was lucky to be credited with that 3/3. I don’t think Alysa should’ve been top 5. She was sloppy, uninspired and outskated. I wouldn’t send her to the Olympics. She’s just not ready.
I feel bad for Alyssa. By reports she had been giving sarcastic comments to reporters and making questionable statements. I get that she’s young and teenagers act a certain way, but you’d never see a young Russian skater acting rude. The young Kwan, Lipinski, Hughes…..never would’ve acted that way.
Is it the coaching change, the unrealistic expectation that she was going to win everything once she was a senior skater, or that skating isn’t something she cares for anymore??? I just hope they rethink their plan to send Alysa and send Lindsey instead.
And Gracie!!! Love her!!!!!! She was the real
Highlight of the night. Maybe after this event Gracie can have a little chat with Alysa.
Ah, but you said US women hadn't won medals in international events, so that was clearly not right. As far as hyping goes, there was a lot of hyping of Gracie Gold in 2014 and Polina Edmonds too. Among others. But I join you in thinking it's pretty natural for folks to do the same with Alysa Liu. She's a very charming and very capable young skater. As I clarified in my post it wasn't my intention to say that US women haven't won anything, but since 2006 they have had little success in the major events (olympics, worlds, gp finals) after decades of consistent success in these competitions. So it's understandable in my mind that members of the fed/press are hyped at talents (in that case Lyu) that could bring them back to the past success.
Yes, I think a few more words would have been helpful to express my thoughts, but in my defense, it was the middle of the night here in Germany and sleep was calling.Ah, but you said US women hadn't won medals in international events, so that was clearly not right. I totally get that. (I'm suffering from it a bit right this minute!) I may have been a bit school-teacher-ish in my response. It's just that honestly, so many people -- especially Americans -- acted as if Ashley Wagner's accomplishments were illusory, or flukes, or ... I don't know what they thought, but they denigrated her accomplishments. But her competitive record is unmatched since Kwan retired. And I am not about to let people forget about it. It was very important to her to compete at a high level internationally.Yes, I think a few more words would have been helpful to express my thoughts, but in my defense, it was the middle of the night here in Germany and sleep was calling.

Rest assured, I was all set to swoop in like a Valkyrie and set my keyboard on fire with a hot defense of Ashley -- only to cool off instantly when I saw you had already beat me to it, and did a much better job than I would have, too.I totally get that.
