No it doesn’t. Nationals determines the National champion as well as envelope funding for the coming year. They aren’t Olympic Trials.

so much love and attention given to the skaters known primarily for jumps and without other elite quality skating skills. It goes both ways.

In a non-COVID year, sure. But having nationals in the first place was really dangerous. To have nationals, only to pick the skaters (across all disciplines) that everyone knew were going to be picked regardless of actual skating, is a super bad look.

He was born in the US. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have Russian citizenship. He lands too many jumps to be a Russian man. Although, he does have the inconsistency. Ilya will do fine in America. It will take him a few months to get recognition by the federation but once he is in, he will be in. The USFS is loyal to skaters. This helps their men's results. ( Less so the women's

Not pointless but, Nationals has just become one more selection criteria on a long list rather than just the end all be all. I think it is smarter for feds to do it this way. I am pretty sure that if G/P had finished in 3rd they would have been sent to the Olympics over H/B. If C/ J had won Nationals, they would have been put on the Olympic team. It matters for teams that are close in the rankings. I think it makes sense. Although, I would prefer a completely numbers based system i.e. the Spanish system where selection is purely a numbers game.

The judging panel had the same opinion as me, He's 13 points in front of the other two
Even if Ilia didn't end up having a great Olympics it still serves more of a purpose for the future of the federation
to send him over sending someone who's just about to retire and is there for the colour he brings,

I agree. They should at minimum not allowed spectators or fans. They should not have had a gala or off ice events.

I go to competitions to watch Jason Brown skate, as well as others.
Gala is on Olympic Channel. You can watch if you use a VPN to pretend you are outside the US.Well Vincent is screwed, get ready for the hate parade... Seriously the Twitterati are going to make him wish he never put on a pair of skates.Hide Vincent, hide!
Meanwhile I'm watching Artur D because the Olympic Channel isn't showing the Gala. That was one impressive 4A attempt!

No matter what happens after today, ilia is a big star in the USA. He'll have the next quarter to himself and his fan base just grew by leaps and bounds. I know he must be disappointed but, he won the hearts of us skating fans.

what a sad comment; I would never say that about a skater I did not prefer.
Jason flies and soars like no other on the ice.
He is exactly why I come to watch competitions. And I am not alone, and it is not only Americans, who come to see JasonYou may not appreciate Jason, which is fine, but many do. Within the context of competitive skating. And thank god, today, the USFS selection committee was one of those who did appreciate him.
Jason will be a fine Olympian and some day, so will Ilia.

Ilya would have been put on the Russian team, yes. But, Russia only had one skater with consistently decent results this year, Kolyada. If they had more, they would save their higher ranked skaters over him. They buried their Juniors to save Anna's score at RN rather like the USFS did for Vincent. They also selected Semenenko over Mozalev. Russia federation makes a lot of decisions to prop up the skaters they see as the best.

That's your opinion. Please stop stating your opinion as fact. Clearly Jason was the favorite of the crowd. The standing ovations started before he finished. He is also a skater's skater which means most other actual skaters prefer him to others. You don't. That's fine but don't pretend your opinion is universal.
