I’m very worried if any Russian skaters see that picture and like it it would run afoul of the neutrality rules because of the very prominent symbol of the Russian state in it! Not to mention the tradition of newlyweds going to war memorials

I wonder what does ‘not having medial clearance’ to compete mean? I was a bit worried about that aligned with the fact they were totally silent on the matter throughout the season. Main thing is they are back skating 🥳🥳

On a separate note Alex, do you know what is the criteria to qualify for Senior Pairs in the Russian GP series? I was a bit disappointed to see only 7 Pairs on the series this year. Still it was one of my favourite competitions of the season, but I would have liked to have seen a full field.

Thanks for all your updates on Russian skating, it’s greatly appreciated.

Athletes undergo mandatory medical examinations twice a year. In case of unsatisfactory results, it is forbidden to participate in competitions (or even training).

National team members have a bye, the rest must be applied for by their local Fed. Every Fed has their own amount of spots. If a local Fed has no entries, their spots are given to others local Feds. Local Feds select participants based on qualifying events at the beginning of a season. For Saint Petersburg it's Saint Petersburg Cup Series and Panin Memorial. In exceptional cases athletes may be entered without qualification (such as qualification missed due to injury).

Because there were no other senior pairs, unfortunately. Next season, however, a large number of ex-junior pairs expected.

Some teams that are not junior-eligible anymore, or became senior-eligible and intented to move up to seniors:
Anastasia Chernyshova/Vladislav Vilchik
Veronika Merenkova/Danil Galimov
Taisia Shcherbinina/Artem Petrov
Valeria Khodykina/Daniil Butenko

This season was unlucky for Russian pairs. Chikmareva/Ianchenkov were injured, Khabibullina/Knyazhuk too, though they at least recovered before nationals, Artemeva/Briukhanov did not have that "medical clearance", Kostornaia/Kunitsa took the "two season break" (with rumors they will represent another country). But as was said, more pairs turn senior so the next season should be satisfying. Apart from those stated above I also presume Shegai/Shaderkov will also move to seniors.
