2024-25 Senior Grand Prix Final Women's Short Program

This was not a good competition. The junior girls were better. Chiba should be in first as she was the only one that even skated clean and she has good components. It’ll come down to the free skate.
She wasn’t clean though, she has under rotations and edge calls.

Also her commitment to the music if just off for me. Honestly it may be a cultural thing but she does a shimmy during the skate and it’s way to ā€œcuteā€ when it should project a completely different vibe.

Both Tim and Mark agreed that Amber won the practice sessions here and judges do watch practices, so I see absolutely no problem with Amber in first. She works so hard and her improvements this season have been immense given her history.

Is that Tim Burton making an appearance again, or Tim with an "e"?

Sorry, I couldn't resist!

sweetheart, the men are gonna "men" no matter what, so prepare yourself! ;) LOL

Are you speaking from personal experience? ;)

Actually, in all seriousness, did you find in your dancing days that men tended to be really inconsistent? And, if so, were you?

The GOE for some of Amber's elements is extraordinary. Landed on two feet on two of the jumping elements, then had a knee on the ice in another one. Fortunate to not get a q on the triple axel as well. Chiba wasn't so fortunate to get away with one on her flip.

Different rules for different skaters once again.

Quite disappointing would have been great to have someone like Kim skating but as we know the judges always hold her back so very hard to get into the GP final, but she likely would have completed all her elements clean.

A couple of questions about scoring: 1) If a "q" on a jump, retains the full base value of the jump, does it serve as just a warning, then? 2) I thought that you were dinged points if you didn't do a combination if the short program. Am I wrong? I see that Wakaba got 6.49 - 2.95 on her 3Lz+COMBO which is what she would have gotten in the free program had she fallen on her 3Lz. So, the fact that she didn't do a second jump on her combo didn't cost her more points.

Huh. That's odd. I would think the element would be invalidated?

1) q jump retains the full base value but affects GOE. Pretty sure the judges aren't allowed to give more than +1, more commonly they give 0 and -1 (though I'm not sure whether they have to change the GOE manually when TP mark a jump q, or whether it reduces the GOE automatically or something)

2) Yes, you got dinged points if you don't do combo in the short program - but the punishment is the same whether you fall or not. Wakaba did get 3Lz+COMBO in her protocol. Had Wakaba only stepped out of the lutz but still didn't do the combo, she would get exactly the same +COMBO and -5 GOEs across the board. The only difference is that she wouldn't get the -1 deduction for the fall.

I hope that makes sense šŸ˜… Other members please CMIIW.

False, Amber cleanly landed the 3Axel. The loss of balance was on a transition after she had landed the jump. She was deducted in PCS for that error.

How odd to try and claim that a skater who wasn’t even in the event would have skated clean here. Events like this when errors are contagious to all the skaters happen from time to time.

Dancing days? Not sure what you mean. The only dancing I've ever done is in the clubs /discos! LOL

I agree with those who said Mone should have won this event. I understand 3A and all this, but Amber's PCS were higher than Mone's, and with all the mistakes she has made it makes it a joke. This is clearly again giving PCS to jumpers just because - and this was this very difference that let her win, not 3A's base value. Watching K&C you could say Amber actually shared this opinion and was pretty surprised with her own score.

What a sad skate! Bring back the Jr ladies. :( And to add insult to injury, I was Peacocked early on so I booted up my laptop in case I needed to switch to ISU and it has a virus. Lots of drivel over on the right third of the screen about McAfee saying I have been infected in imperfect english. That I cant X out of. It turned off Microsoft Defender and I couldnt turn that on. I went to a Windows 11 restore point and now I can turn Defender on and I did a quick scan and now a full system scan. This is a PITA I dont need right now. :( At least the ice storm isnt worsening.

Coming in late to see this.

Hmm. Little nerves here and there. Underperformances from lots of them. Only Mone-san came out clean-ish. At least Amber stayed on her feet, and she was lucky that the others didn't have their best day.

This can go anywhere. Anyone can podium me thinks.

Because generally speaking junior girls do not realize the pressure? It's women's skating, an important event, the tension is very high. They can all skate clean. The main thing is to keep your head cool.

I was surprised how nervous everyone seemed in what is essentially a warmup for Japanese Nationals(Amber aside), where the stakes will be far higher. I thought Mone was cleanest and should have been in first. Amber got generous scoring and should have been second. Hana was just ok, but didn't fall. Kaori was probably the sloppiest and really should be in last. Rino was pretty good, but had a fall. Ironically, Wakaba probably skated the best of anyone, but made the biggest mistake as well, and paid the price. Hopefully the LP is better executed for everyone and Amber's back is ok.
