Well, maybe this will help cool things down. Who could possibly be upset with a Silver or Bronze when you put Javi, Hanyu, and Chan in the mix? It's sad that I don't know who the top Russian is this season but, I would think he, along with Max would be very happy to place fourth at this event. I know I'd be happy for Max if gets fourth at the Final. Did he make the final? I'm so out of it without Joshua skating that I haven't been following too closely.

Chan needs really generous PCS to go against 5 quads and 3As.

There is no room for generosity for his PCS. He's jammed between inflation underfoot and a hard ceiling overhead.

No, Max didn't make the final. But Shoma Uno and Boyang Jin both did and could make waves against the Big Three. Sixth man Murakami is no slouch, either.

If Hanyu can land 3 quads and two 3as, Chan has no margin for error: he has to land 2 quads and one 3a, make no mistakes and hope the judges will be generous with PCS.

To me the issue is not generosity in judging, but rather whether Patrick (or any skater, really) can maintain the same level of performance when he starts loading up on the tech.

That is well put. It would be better if there were a way to spread out the PCSs at the top level in order to distinguish between someone with pretty good skating and performance skills (8.75) and someone with world-beating scores (9.50). This is not much or a difference in the total score, compared to, say, popping a jump.

For Men, there are 3 from Japan and one each from Canada, China, and Spain.

Unfortunately for both Russia and US, they have depth under the top tier.

True........As I said before, I'm praying that Max, Adam, or Jason can place 5th. Even if the Big 4 make mistakes, I can't see any US Man beating Javi, Denis, Hanyu, or Patrick. In fact, with all those big names, I'd be happy as a clam with a 5th place finish for a US man.

The last time that happened was in the 2012-13 season. (By the way, the podium, in ascending order, was Chan, third; Hanyu, second; and Daiske Takahashi, first. (I'm not a prophet, but just sayin'… ) .)

No there isn't. It's 3 japanese, 1 chinese, 1 canadian and 1 spaniard. In 2012 there were no russian or american men either (actually, it was Javi, Pat and then 4 asian men again )

Edit: there were no russian or american men at the GPF 2010 either. Doesn't seem like the unlikeliest scenario to have neither at the GPF...

Very true. Although 8.75 is already better than pretty good -- the definition of 8.0 is "very good." So if a skater really deserves high 8s, s/he's already a top skater componentwise.

The problem is more if the skater is just "pretty good" on component skills and really deserves PCS in the 7s, but the judges get impressed enough by multiple quads to give high 8s anyway.

Hey Mathman, yes, I mean Worlds. Daiske Takahashi is another skater I have never seen live. In fact, the only Japanese Men I've seen live are Takeshi Honda and Oda.

Yuzu is still the same Yuzu...it all depends on how well he can concentrate. Last time between him and Patrick, he got over-excited and lost focus. It wasn't a physical thing, it was all in his head. So let's see how he does in Round 2. The whole field is chasing Yuzu again, but Yuzu mustn't think of it that way. He'll need to imagine that they are all chasing the 'perfect mark' together. Oh, and Happy Birthday!

A credit to the human race (borrowing what was also said of Joe Louis that he was a credit to his race, the human race). Javier is such a lovely guy inside and out.

Personally, I find it very exciting that after Sochi, Yuzuru, Patrick, Denis, and Javier are still competing when any of them could have retired. We have a lot to be thankful for as skating fans.
