You know them - quirky programs
Strange music choices
Freaky costumes that actually worked

I am craving these in a year where same-y sameness is getting to me. The 1990's RD's are definitely not helping

So exhibit One.

Mark Webster of Australia skates to the Nokia ringtone for his SP 2016-17

Please suggest other choices!

My oh so loved Nelli Zhiganshina & Alexander Gazsi's Two from the Grave

and Kolyada's Nightmare Before Christmas

I assume we are not doing gala/exhibition/show programs otherwise the flood would drown out the competition ones :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUjRWxDrW6o Samuel Contesti, La Vie en Rose & La Valse a mille temps 2011-2012 FP
Also his 2010-2011 SP to Hungarian march & 1812 overture

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8YxSJqcLyI Daisuke Takahashi, Blues for Klook, 2011-2012 FP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeJFgyzmaAM Karolina Kostner, God of thunder, 2016-2017 SP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKJbTRWrRco Michal Brezina, Codo drums, 2010-2011 SP

From 6.0 pretty much any program by Philippe Candeloro's. Let it be the Godfather sequence from 1994:

Alexei Yagudin's 1998-1999 clown to Schnittke's Gogol-suite is very quirky, but if we only chose one, let it be
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqs1nNmOpok Nutrocker, 1999-2000 SP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOdqMW6GHq0 an interesting idea of Timothy Goebel to skate in 2001 to 2001 space Odyssey

I loved Zhiganshina & Gaszi, and particularly that Zombie program

And I was up for any program Mikhail Kolyada did
😄

Ryan Bradley is the only skater I know who ever skated to
"Happy Birthday" Variations: Polka & Valse by: Kremerata Baltica, Gidon Kremer.

Pretty good skating, too!

Kalinka - Maria Sotskova Gala
(Personal in that my gram used to call me this when I was little)

I tried to find a video of Ksenia Makarova's 2011-12 Marilyn Monroe free program where she does a spin to the MGM closing title music even though it's not actually the end of the program, which made me howl laughing the first time I saw it during the 2011 GP, but the only video on YouTube was so low-quality that it's unwatchable.

Instead, I submit the Beier siblings' OD to polka "Like a Virgin." This may not be the craziest music/program choice ever, but it sure isn't near the bottom of the list!

The Yankee Polka based SD in the 2012-13 season produced a number of quirky programs, not just the "Like a Virgin Polka."

My favorite was Davis & White skating the Yankee Polka to music from the ballet Giselle - somehow the program was true both to the ballet and the polka!

In case you wondered why it is odd to cross a ballet with
the Yankee Polka Compulsory Dance, here is a typical presentation of the Yankee Polka CD. Yes, the pointed heels were a typical feature. And yes, this is current World Champion Evan Bates with his previous partner:

Here she is - MGM music is there, but she was having a bad day for sure.

Nowadays this would be not be considered unusual.

But 20 years ago, it was way different than anything else out there. And Dick Button was delighted. :)

Stephanie Rosenthal and Herbie Hancock's "Rockit"

I just watched this dance and thought I should give it a standing ovation so I stood up in my kitchen and clapped. As I was clapping I saw a person in the audience at the short end of the arena who was wearing a yellow coat and cap and standing too. Then I realized that was me:palmf:. It is unfortunate how soon we forget the good times.

So of course I had to go back and watch again, only to watch the audience instead of the skaters, looking for someone cheering in a yellow coat and cap :jump3:.

I went back and watched it again after reading your comment. I really appreciated the close-up picture of Nelli's face at the start of the program.:fun:

Sorry to wander off topic but remembering that I was in Kent also brought back a couple of other fond memories related to Golden Skate. I remember meeting Doris and her lovely husband in the lobby of the hotel where we were staying. And I think Doris showed me how to make a cup of coffee in the Keurig coffee maker in the lobby—I had never used a pod coffee machine before. Thank you Doris and thank you for all the work you do on this blog.🥰
