Crazy Music and Program Choices

I remember that, and I'm pretty sure it was just that. I suspect more often than we realise, the skaters don't actually understand (or they misunderstand, language being what it is and English being as allusive as the next one) the words they are skating to.

Totally a non sequitor but can I offer a young Evan Bates as a cowboy? You do need to go to youtube
to watch but it's totally worth it.

Interesting, in that video (first couple to skate) is Allison Reed skating for Georgia with a different partner. She doesn't seem to have aged at all!

So many of Savchenko & Szolkowy's programs. I think they had the most diverse programs of all pair skaters, ever. It's hard to find good quality videos of them, so I just link one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUxMLDbLvlU
I've always been impressed by the height that Aliona got on the throw jumps and there was a wonderful example in this clip. :love2: In the slo-mo it looked like Aliona's feet were about shoulder high on Robin. :wonder:

Daniel Grassl's Conclave program starting with voiceovers ; "the pope is dead". ... he is dressed as a bishop... later on, when the jumps are done with, he reveals his white shirt .... as if he is the new pope... I find the whole thing crazy. I never thought I'd say that but I miss his program from last year now that I have seen this LP.

There were some really strange programs with the men in China: Daniel's was the most wtf but Vladimir and Mikhail both made me boggle.

After watching the Free Dance in this weekend's Cup of China, I would like to add Maddie and Evan to this mix. That ridiculous long skirt totally obliterates the beautiful technical ability this duo has. The attention is all on whether Evan is going to trip on it or have it draped over his face so he can't see where he's going. Bad decision. And don't get me started on Daniel Grassl. Really poor taste and really poor choice.

I have to agree, Maddie's skirt takes over the performance (and is almost reminiscent of the infamous "bed sheet" from their exhibition program). I also don't get "Paint it Black" as flamenco.

Grassl always has strange program choices, maybe it will play well in Italy. I don't understand why his scores are so high.

Didn't she fall in galas a few times because of that bed sheet? And didn't she learn from this? 🙄

I was expecting her to get a blade caught in it, particularly in a dance lift and they'd both come crashing down.:dbana::dbana:

Ohhhh - forgot about that dreadful bedsheet. Sometimes I think Maddie and Evan try to get too esoteric in their choices and only a few people other than them understand what they were getting at. The story is far out and strange. There are so many beautiful pieces of music they could do amazing justice to. I wasn't pleased when I heard they were doing yet another flamenco (should be banned with tangoes IMO) but when I heard what the music was...........:confused2:

In 2009-2010, the SD was folk dance.

Here Kharis Ralph & Asher Hill of Canada chose to perform a dance based on the Gumboot dance of South Africa. The music is "Somlandela" performed by Soweto Gospel Choir and "Hlohonolofatsa" performed by Soweto Gospel Choir.

They made the Junior Grand Prix Final that season.

And in case you never heard about the Gumboot Dance, here is an explanation and performance.

And a shorter vid of a group performing a gumboot dance

Needless to say. I found the whole thing very interesting!
