Deniss Vasiljevs

I think most people are assuming it will be Stephane's new program. Although Deniss was copying some of the moves and watching intently

Plot twist: It turns out to be a duet :v
Jokes aside, I think it’s Deniss’ program. I don’t think he would be skating along and trying to imitate Stephane if it’s not his program. But whoever it belongs to is fine with me. As long as I can see it performed beautifully, I’m satisfied. :3

From what I understand from the website, only master level has courses available in english. I also looked at other unis, but it seems like most bachelor courses in Switzerland are in french or german. But maybe Deniss actually found a course in english but we don’t know about it :v

Can I just say how happy it makes me that I’m not the only one who’s been looking up info about courses at Swiss universities? You all are great!

That looks reasonable. He can't read French yet, but he is conversational in it iirc so as long as there are English versions of the course material for him to read he'll be fine with lectures in French. Steph can help him with anything he doesn't understand. :)

And looking at that timeline, he must have already applied.

Which makes me wonder, how do visas work for skaters? Like, is Deniss already on a student visa or is there a category for athletes?

If he studies there, he will get more involved in Swiss society anyway, so he will have more practice. And in the end it means that he knows 4 languages! It's a valuable investment in his future career! :cool2:

New video/interview with Deniss and Stéphane (in Russian). Anyone want to translate? https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=GlxdOHpyi3c

I like seeing more clips of them skating, even if Deniss’ quads still were looking rough on the pole.

That footwork at the start

I am 1:45 into this video and it is already so cute I could die. :o:

I think what they are doing is working on his toeloop technique. Or that seems to be what needs to be done. That's the only jump Deniss prerotates and he doesn't get the lift on it that he does with with the other toepick jumps (flip and lutz). If he could get the same height on his 3T as he does on his 3Lz he'd have the quad eventually since his 3T rotation speed is quite fast. I think it may take some time, so I won't be disappointed if he doesn't have it down by September. The 4S attempts, although he stepped out of it there on the pole, look a bit closer to happening soon-ish - he didn't need to be held up as much by the pole to make the rotations.

I am curious what Stephane said with regards to what happened at the Olympics, although it's not hard to work out that nerves/stress probably got to Deniss. And what question he said he wouldn't ask himself.

Beautiful foot work! And you were right, lavenderblossom, Deniss seems to having practice compulsory figures
I understand some 90 percent of the interview but if there are no volunteers I'll try to translate it roughly - with a request to correct me if necessary.

0:00 - 0:45 Introduction: the international training camp took place at Ledus halle in Daugavpils from 3 to 12 May. It was possible thanks to some Latvian institutions and Swiss Skating School, founded by Stephane Lambiel, world-famous champion, now a coach of Deniss Vasiljevs. TV made this interview in a break between training sessions.

0-46 - 1:22 I: There're so many talented skaters, why you decided to take Deniss as a student?
S: It's not that I believe in destiny, but it was simply like being in the right place in the right time, when we met. I had a good feeling about him. I like working with Deniss. There is a two-side relation: what I give, I get back from Deniss. I coach Deniss hoping that he not only will be the best figure skater in the world, but also a good man.

1:23- 1:55 I: Are you a strict coach?
S: I am a precise coach. I don't mind using different methods as each skater is different. But I insist on precise performing of every elements. Discipline is also very important. If something's going wrong one must train as long as a jump or another element is done perfectly. This is a principle every skaters should know from beginning.

1:56 - 2:55 I [to Deniss]: Is he strict for you?
D: He rather gives me advices and supports me to state my goals and achieve them in the most effective way.
I: Is it true that a coach is like a parent?
D: In some way they are, especially like in my case, when my family live here and I train in Switzerland. A coach, like a parent, try to do his best for success of a sportsman.

2:56 - 3:21 I [to Stephane]: Is Deniss Vasiljevs an experiment?
S: Life is a full experiment, I mean every day is a new experiment. Moreover, he takes himself as an experiment.[...] My work is to make this inner content alike a huge, massive piramide [OK, I don't catch it...].

3:22 - 3:49 I: Deniss, do you sometimes disagree with your coach? Maybe inside you feel that something's wrong?
D: I belive him and take his advices, he always helps, so I do what he says.

There are so many questions I would like to ask both of them, but … In my opinion most of the facts are already known to the true fans. But there are some nuances and I will try to give a short survey soon.

I get more and more interested in people around Deniss, for example, Chris, Rob 'cause Stephane is not the only one who determines his daily live.

Better don't die! :roll5: Thank you for explanation! I just wanted to ask somebody to tell which jumps he is trying to do.

Thank you, icetug! You are doing very well! Go on doing it.

The off season footage and pictures is getting me hyped up for this coming season. I'm just glad there hasn't been any negative drama regarding Deniss. So happy the camp in Latvia went well :)

At 1:47 he is doing 4S in harness, at 2:20 3T (I saw video of him drilling 3T, I'll try to find it), at 6:03 4T in harness, and 6:20 toeloop but popped.

I think after watching a few times that he is also working on doing lots of turns on one foot.

3:50 - 4:26 One of the most important events for Deniss were Olympic Games, where he was 19th. We want to believe that it's only the beginning of his way to the top. How did the participation in Olympics change him?
D: It made me stronger. Now I want to dedicate even more to figure skating and to go step by step to the top.

4:27 - 5:15 Was the coach satisfied with his student's performance?
S: Olimpics were a dissapointment, because of mistakes in SP. But I don't think it happened because Deniss wasn't well prepared or not ready. He was ready for one hundred percent, the more before Olympics he had got good results and he believed in himself. But it happened what happened. Anyway, the participation in Olympics itself is a priceless experience, the more for a young athlete. And if we talk about the whole picture, Deniss finished the season with his PB at WC in Milan, where he was 6th. He had a chance to show to the world his best side, his qualities, and he took that chance.

5:16 -6:01 I: How are Olympic Games changing themselves? [OK, I don't understand, as Stephane answers quite different question :scratch2:]
S: I don't even ask the question myself. My Olympic moments passed and I had a time to fully enjoy them. Now I am a coach and I enjoy the role. I am looking forward to next Olympics. I took part in three Olympic Games as a sportsman and I want Deniss to go the same way. I want Deniss to develop, to remember that everything in life's going ahead. I am here to show him that way.

6:02-6:30 Today Deniss is practising a quad. It's impossible to get to the top without it.
D: For the most of the training time I work on quads. It's a process I haven't passed through yet. But I want to have a quad next season and think I will have.

From 6:31 - Stephane answers a question if he liked the city (very much and he hopes to come back; it was really nice to see the town of Deniss' childhood and the ice rink).
Deniss is happy because of a fine weather - and simply that he can stay in the city for a while.

OK, that's all. Hope there is not much lost in translation
I decided to translate it because I'm still amazed how much Deniss and Stephane are attached to each other. Obviously it's visible, but it's also in the way they talk one about another.

Thanks so much icetug :thank:

Is it possible Stephane took the question to mean something like, how has the Olympics changed since he participated? But at the same time he did kind of answer by not answering, in saying he doesn't think about how it changed him, he just enjoyed the moment and now he is a coach so the experience is different?

Now I know what they are talking about at the end it is so sweet. And they look so happy :agree2:
To think, when baby Deniss was taking his first steps on that ice aged 3, Stephane had already been to Euros, Worlds and Olympics :eeking:

I'm under the impression (but I can be quite wrong) that many of the questions asked during the interview reflect of all the discussion about Eteri school and Zhenya coach switching. But it seems that at least Deniss is unaware of the background ;)

They really have some misunderstanding about the Olympic Games. I don’t see any use of asking this question in a short interview. As we don’t hear how the question was translated, it might be that Stephane misunderstood.
A little trifle- in Russian translation (1:25) he says – I don't mind using different methods as the students are different.

It seems that the camp was a success. At least the kids look happy and relaxed. Koshiro's always :) face proves it!

You are absolutely right- they are really attached to each other. To my mind Deniss for Stephane is the same what Stephane was for Grutter. I'm amazed what a caring coach Stephane is.

Thank you! It changes the meaning so I've just corrected the translation.
I don't have many opportunities to speak Russian as even Russian tourists ask me to show them the way in English
