Kinoshita Group Cup Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J20Bq57UbEs

Emilea and Vadym finished 2nd out of 8 in the Short Dance, with a score of 76.24.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch LIVE. But, I have now watched the shorter of the two videos I found (the longer one I wanted to watch was removed by the time I wrote this), so here is the sort of comment I would have written if I had been watching LIVE:

Interesting starting position. Very hot! 🔥

Strange armography.

What am I listening to?! 🙉

Lost synchronisation on Twizzles. (They actually looked a lot better in the slow-motion replays afterwards than they did in real-time).

Song in the middle much better. Although it did get a bit repetitive.

Wow at that part where Vadym is swinging Emilea around and around and around!

What on Earth is this last song?! 🙉

They are really going for it. Though what "it" is, I don't know!

Emilea looks so cute in her closing pose. Although the close-up of her was nice, I wouldn't have minded seeing what Vadym was doing too. (We kinda got to see his position in the replays, but from not a great angle).

The audience loved it. Me, I wasn't fussed.

The lack of reaction to the scores says everything. They are disappointed.

They go into 2nd position.

:cheer: WELL DONE EMILEA AND VADYM!!! :cheer:

The only member that commented about them in the competition thread at the time was our resident video archive list compiler, @labgoat, who said:

And then added:

Looking at the Protocols, they agreed with my initial assessment of the Twizzles. They got the lowest GOE, at +0.48; and the lowest set of Judges marks, with -2 from Judge 6; 0 from two Judges; +1 from three Judges; and +2 from Judge 7. (Talk about a mixed bag!)

The Pattern Step Sequence which followed got +1 from Judge 6; +2 from three Judges; and +3 from three Judges. But the remaining elements were completely +3's and +4's. And the GOE's were impressive too, going all the way up to +4.80 for the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence at the end.

A thing to note is that one of the Judges called them for a "Violation of choreo restrictions". Fortunately, none of the others did. Nevertheless, it is something that they should have a look at, just in case they get more calls and do end up getting a deduction in future.

Emilea and Vadym are currently 0.16 points behind 1st position, Marie-Jade LAURIAULT / Romain le GAC (FRA), and 7.47 points ahead of 3rd position, Leah NESET / Artem MARKELOV (USA).

Boys but that is close! We have a two-way shootout in the Free Dance, and it really could go either way.

So, let's hope Emilea and Vadym have a good Free Dance and can claim the title!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start tomorrow at 12:45:00 JST Sunday (23:45:00 EDT Saturday / 03:45:00 GMT Sunday / 04:45:00 BST Sunday / 06:45:00 EEST Sunday). So 8 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym will be the 7th and penultimate partnership to start. So, third and penultimate partnership in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 13:21:50 JST Sunday (00:21:50 EDT Sunday / 04:21:50 GMT Sunday / 05:21:50 BST Sunday / 07:21:50 EEST Sunday). So 8h 31m from now.

Emilea and Vadym are due to start at 13:43:00 JST Sunday (00:43:00 EDT Sunday / 04:43:00 GMT Sunday / 05:43:00 BST Sunday / 07:43:00 EEST Sunday). So 8h 58m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.

Emi and Vadym finished second in the FD so they take home silver for the dance event at Kinoshita . But I thought their R&J program was the skate of the night - virtuosic, dark and passionate, it really suits their intensity well. I’m excited for how it will develop over the season. I thought their RD was terrific and great fun, with actual hip hop steps and arm movements. In fact, I think both programs are sensational - they set them up well for the fall competitions.

Emilea and Vadym finished 2nd out of 8 in the FD, with a score of 117.27. This meant that they remained in 2nd position overall, with a score of 193.51.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch LIVE. But, I have now watched the video, so here is the sort of comment I would have written if I had been watching LIVE:

Emilea in a gorgeous black dress. Vadym wearing a black waistcoat, black trousers, and a white shirt which he has only bothered to button up half way!

Oh, Vadym spotted something on the ice next to where they were starting, and picked it up and took it to the boards.

I was starting to worry about the music when we just heard a drum being hit a few times at the start, but then it kicked in in earnest. Judging my what Emilea was doing, I guess it was supposed to be a heartbeat.

Loved the choreography in the early stages.

Foxtrot good.

Now I'm singing along in my head: "What's your favourite children's book of the last 10 years?"

Lost synchronisation on the Twizzles.

After that, all of it was beautiful. Just beautiful.

Interesting choreography when the "What's your favourite children's book of the last 10 years?" bit came back in!

The closing pose reminded me of something you would find in a Nelli Zhiganshina / Alexander Gazsi programme! (And that is no bad thing! ;) )

The SD was not my taste, but this definitely was. I LOVED IT!!! :cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

For years I have found this Japanese announcer's voice really sexy. And every time I heard her say Emilea's name at this event, I really melted!

From their reaction to the scores, you can tell they don't think it will be enough.

They go into the lead.

:cheer: WELL DONE EMILEA AND VADYM!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Looking at the Protocols, I think I was wrong about the Twizzles this time. Because they got GOE of +2.32; and Judges marks of five +3's; and two +4's.

And those numbers are typical of all the elements. The GOE's ranged from +1.54 for the sixth element, the Curved Lift; to +3.26 for the Rotational Lift-Stationary Lift that they did directly afterwards. And all but one of the Judges marks were in the +2 to +4 range. The exception was a +5 that Judge 6 gave for the aforementioned Rotational Lift-Stationary Lift.

Like in the SD, one of the Judges called them for a "Violation of choreo restrictions". Fortunately, none of the others did. So, they need to look at something in this programme too.

Emilea and Vadym finished the Free Dance 4.23 points behind 1st position, Marie-Jade LAURIAULT / Romain le GAC (FRA), and 9.77 points ahead of 3rd position, Leah NESET / Artem MARKELOV (USA).

Overall, Emilea and Vadym finished 4.39 points behind 1st position, Lauriault / le Gac, and 17.24 points ahead of 3rd position, Neset / Markelov.

So, it was a tale of two programmes. A Short that isn't my taste, and a Free that is my taste. But, they were great at both of them.

Based on what I have seen in Japan, I have a feeling that this is going to be a great season for them. I just hope that the internal politics of American Ice Dance doesn't get in their way.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

Emilea and Vadym finished 2nd out of 10 in the Short Dance, with a score of 80.43.

Here is what I wrote about the Warm-Up in the competition thread:

Here is what I wrote when they were being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about the programme:

The first comment from other members came from GGFan, and went totally over my head at the time:

Then when the programme finished, @GGFan added:

To which Aussie member @TallyT later replied:

@museksk8r pointed out that they made the most of it:

@auser echoed @GGFan, but was more specific:

@TallyT confused me:

Black is black (I want my baby back...)

@readernick was very complimentary about Emilea:

And not-the-band @cocteautwin was very complimentary about Vadym... and Emilea:

In an example of German efficiency, @DemTuppesSeine summed it up in just one word:

When the scores were announced, @museksk8r came back to point out:

Yes, it is a new ISU PB for the SD. But it's actually only 4.19 points more than their previous ISU PB, from last month's Challenger event in Japan. So, "huge" is maybe over-doing it a bit.

@theblade was another member who was complimenting Emilea:

To which I replied:

You know who I mean!

Fast forward to after the competition was over, @SkatersWaltz replied to my reply with this:

@IceDancingQueen commented:

Praise indeed!

@GGFan came back again to say:

So am I. So am I.

When the Protocols came out, @pearly noted something I usually check for when writing these reports:

After this, there were some comments that took in a number of partnerships, including Emilea and Vadym. So, I will just quote the relevant parts:

I am still struck by the speed, attack, and total dance (club) vibes put out by Z/K and D/LM.

I feel so sad for Green/Parsons. I really wanted them to do well as I would love them to make the Olympic team. Z/K are looking very strong so they’ll need to do some work to catch up.

Nobody is really coping well with this RD theme this year. It comes across as a drag. But kudos to Zin/Kol for understanding the assignment.

Thrilled, ecstatic, and over the moon for Zingas/Kolesnik! I just love them! I like the program, even with the hyper arm choreo. So thrilled to see them getting rewarded score wise.

And some more that were posted after I posted this report:

Rewatching, Z/K are fast and sharp. The ending is super fast but the arms are not sloppy or whippy without hitting positions. Coming out of the gate this season ready to nab an Olympic spot if they can. Probably can.

Zingas and Kolesnik were really good, she has improved so much over the last few years. Their skate was the highlight for me.

I'm super happy for Z/K! Wow, they really made a statement with their placement! I hope they can follow it up tomorrow with a solid FD.

Looking at the Protocols, there were no issues at all. The GOE ranged from +1.51 for the fourth element, the Roller Lift, to +5.36 for the final element, the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence. Apart from a +5 from Judge 2 for the aforementioned Roller Lift, all the Judges marks were in the +2 to +4 range.

Emilea and Vadym are currently 4.01 points behind 1st position, Madison CHOCK / Evan BATES (USA), and 2.81 points ahead of 3rd position, Evgeniia LOPAREVA / Geoffrey BRISSAUD (FRA).

To be honest, I can't see Emiela and Vadym overtaking Madison and Evan for the win. Chock / Bates have a decent sized lead, and also have more clout. Much as the ISU tries to deny it, reputation does play a part in Ice Dance. But, Emilea and Vadym have a good shot at getting the Silver Medal. They just need to put in a good Free Dance to make sure that Zhenya and Geoff stay behind them.

So let's hope they do have that good Free Dance!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start tomorrow at 14:30:00 CST (02:30:00 EDT / 06:30:00 GMT / 07:30:00 BST / 09:30:00 EEST). So 11 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym will be the 9th and penultimate partnership to start. So, fourth partnership and penultimate in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 15:15:55 CST (03:15:55 EDT / 07:15:55 GMT / 08:15:55 BST / 10:15:55 EEST). So 11h 45m from now.

Emilea and Vadym are due to start at 15:46:10 CST (03:46:10 EDT / 07:46:10 GMT / 08:46:10 BST / 10:46:10 EEST). So 12h 16m from now.

Emilea and Vadym finished 2nd out of 10 in the FD, with a score of 121.84. This meant that they remained in 2nd position overall, with a score of 202.27.

Here is what I wrote when they were being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about the programme:

Going back, there was another comment during the Warm-Up, which came from @IceDancingQueen, who said:

And in contrast, here is the next comment, which came from @Sabsi when they were being introduced before their programme:

I like the costumes. But, having not actually seen any adaptations yet ("Romeo + Juliet" was on TV last week, and I meant to tape it but forgot :palmf: ), I'm on the fence as to whether they fit Romeo & Juliet.

@theblade was impressed with Emilea and Vadym, but not with what they had to work with:

And @readernick agreed, replying with:

And so did @IceDancingQueen, who replied with:

Not-the-band @cocteautwin and Polish member @Karoltyna both got distracted by something:

@auser enjoyed the programme:

And German member @DemTuppesSeine was impressed with the score:

At the end of the day, some members that missed the Free Dance when it was happening watched the archived livestream together as it if was LIVE. So, I will add their comments in here.

Our resident video archive list compiler, @labgoat, posted a comment summarising the costumes of the Group 2 skaters during the Warm-Up:

And this is what she said about Emilea and Vadym's programme:

@yuumagical then commented:

And @Weathergal added:

After the competition had finished, there were some more comments that mentioned Emilea and Vadym. The first, from @FSFan1999, was part of a discussion comparing this week's winners Chock / Bates with last week's winners, Fournier-Bourdry / Cizeron:

There were then some posts that commented on quite a few partnerships, so I will only quote the bits about Emilea and Vadym:

I almost get ZK are the flavour of the season. Remembrer we have seen this sparkle or hope with PC, LB, LaLa, Smart and Diez etc.

As per Zhingas/Kolesnyk: a VERY positive surprise. I can see a great potential. Their lines, carriage, technical ability promise a "star quality". The fact that they (correctly) got a higher technical points than the 3x Worldchampions says a lot (about both couples). They give the reason to be excited in the future (maybe even the recent days).

This was an absolute dream week for Z/K and Sphilband! If this team can just continue going in this upward momentum and stay clean and consistent, that Olympic spot may be theirs for claiming. I was really impressed by their maturity and progress as a team here. They were noticeably crisp and clean and competed with great attack for so early in the season and that’s exactly what you have to do as a rising team to make the panel take notice of you. This definitely could be the breakthrough competition for this team and I’m so happy for them!

Getting back to the posts specifically about Emilea and Vadym, @theblade came back to say:

@Andrina wondered about who would be selected for the Olympics:

It's far too early in the season to be thinking about selections for any of the Majors! :drama:

Of the answers that came, @FSFan1999 was the only person that mentioned Emilea and Vadym in their reply:

Looking at the Protocols, there were no issues here either. The GOE ranged from +1.65 for the sixth element, the Curved Lift, to +3.57 for the seventh element, the Roller Lift-Stationary Lift. Apart from two +5's for the final element, the Character Step, all the Judges marks were in the +2 to +4 range.

Emilea and Vadym finished the Free Dance 1.97 points behind 1st position, Madison CHOCK / Evan BATES (USA), and 1.70 points ahead of 3rd position, Olivia SMART / Tim DIECK (ESP). The three partnerships are at the top of a group of 4 partnerships covered by 4.83 points, which is completed by Evgeniia LOPAREVA / Geoffrey BRISSAUD (FRA) in 4th position, 2.86 points behind Emilea and Vadym.

Overall, Emilea and Vadym finished 5.98 points behind 1st position, Chock / Bates, and 5.67 points ahead of 2nd position, Lopareva /Brissaud.

Emilea and Vadym had the programme with the fourth highest Base Value in the Free Dance. The interesting thing, though, is that the programme from Chock / Bates, which won the Free Dance, was not one of the programmes that had a higher Base Value. It had the seventh highest Base Value. To put it another way: only the partnerships that finished the Free Skate in the last and penultimate positions had Base Values lower than the programme that won the Free Dance.

This is bound to be encouraging for Emilea and Vadym in terms of the domestic scene and, hence, selection for the Majors. It shows that they have in their arsenal a programme that is capable of beating the favourites for the title at Nationals. It is all down to whether they can skate well enough to overcome the politics of American Ice Dance.

But, getting back to the present, it was a very productive trip to Chongqing for Emilea and Vadym, as they are going back to Michigan with not just the 🥈 Silver Medal, but also new ISU PB's in both segments and overall.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

And I hope that Emilea thoroughly spoils you! ;)

I really liked Avonley and Vadym's partnership, and was shocked when it ended. I thought they would go far in this sport.

But, I am so glad that he came back with my girl Emilea. And I am absolutely delighted with how well they have progressed in what is a relatively short time. They have grown into a really strong partnership. And this is looking like it will be their breakthrough season.

Anyway, I hope that Vadym has a great birthday.

Here is what I wrote when they were being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about the programme:

Just before they skated @Sackie made this very positive comment:

@labgoat then came back to wish them all the best:

After they finished, @museksk8r commented:

@GGFan evidently likes the music more than I do:

But my Norwegian friend, @norwegianfairytale, agrees with me:

Polish member @Karoltyna was impressed:

Like @museksk8r earlier, @auser was impressed with their energy:

Not-the-band @cocteautwin was full of praise:

And then @museksk8r came back with an interesting observation:

@labgoat then came back to give her assessment:

@4everchan then made a short to the point comment, but I am not sure whether it was about Emilea and Vadym or the partnership coming after them, Piper and Paul:

But the observation that @norwegianfairytale made next was definitely about Emilea and Vadym:

@museksk8r came back again to give us the results, and to point out something I hadn't realised:

The final comment came from @GGFan, but to be honest, I don't understand it:

Looking at the Protocols, everything was positive. The GOE ranged from +1.71 for two elements - the second element, the Twizzzles, and the fourth element, the Roller Lift - to +4.71 for the final element, the Choreographic Rhythm Sequence. Funnily enough, although it got the highest GOE of the programme, it was actually the lowest scoring element of the programe because it had by far the lowest Base Value of the programme. The Twizzles, meanwhile, were the third highest scoring element of the programme.

There was not much difference in the Base Values for the first three elements that they did, but when the GOE was applied, the two elements that had the higher Base Values pulled away to cement their positions. The opening element, the Midline Step Sequence, remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme, while the third element, the Pattern Step Sequence, remained as the highest scoring element of the programme.

Apart from a +1 from Judge 8 for the aforementioned Twizzles, all the Judges marks were in the +2 to +4 range.

Emilea and Vadym are currently 1.05 points behind 2nd position, Piper GILLES / Paul POIRIER (CAN), and 2.44 points ahead of 4th position, Olivia SMART / Tim DIECK (ESP). Emilea and Vadym are the bottom partnership in a group where 3 partnerships are covered by 1.38 points, which is headed by Laurence FOURNIER BEAUDRY / Guillaume CIZERON (FRA).

This is going to be an exciting climax to the competitive action at the Finlandia Trophy. Any of the Top 4 partnerships could win the title. And any of them could finish in any of the four positions. So Emilea and Vadym are going to have to make sure to put in a good Free Dance to try to maximise their chances of moving up, and minimise their chances of dropping off the podium.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Senior Free Dance is due to start at 19:40:00 EET (12:40:00 EST / 17:40:00 GMT). So 11 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym will be the 8th and antepenultimate partnership to start. So, third and middle partnership in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 20:25:55 EET (13:25:55 EST / 18:25:55 GMT). So 11h 45m from now.

Emilea and Vadym are due to start at 20:48:20 EET (13:48:20 EST / 18:48:20 GMT). So 12h 8m from now.

I don't see that this is posted elsewhere. Lots of interesting info.

I barely follow dance but am really impressed with them. I love that they are using the Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet and not that one with the vocals. When I started reading more about them, I remrmbered they were the ones who did a cool Beauty and the Beast program a few years ago. I am definitely a fan!!!!! Can't wait to see them at the GPF.

And here is what I wrote about the programme:

Before they skated, @Sackie pointed out:

While Estonian member @Anni234 asked:

@EdgeCall just summed it up in two words (and an emoticon!):

Canadian member @4everchan pointed out something that I hadn't been thinking about (because I hadn't been following the Senior GP Series closely):

@GGFan was very impressed:

As was @RatedPG:

Italian member @bartlebooth pointed out an inaccuracy:

I'm not actually sure if it was Olivia and Tim or Emilea and Vadym, but @bramweld wasn't impressed with somebody's programme:

Our bastion of positivity, @Jeanie19, definitely was impressed:

So was @IceDancingQueen:

And not-the-band @cocteautwin:

Emilea and Vadym's programme reminded Polish member @Ares of another "Romeo And Juliette" programme:

And, as @Seven Sisters pointed out, @Ares was not the only one:

To which @bartlebooth replied:

@maofan felt the same way as I did when I realised who they had knocked out of the Senior GP Final:

The final comment came from @bramweld, so their previous comment must have been about the previous partnership:

Before I go any further, I just have to link to this post on Twitter from @NoNameFace:

https://www.twitter.com/NoNameFace10/status/1992326385755709747

And this one too:

https://www.twitter.com/NoNameFace10/status/1992629220950810703

Looking at the Protocols, it was the same as the other three times they skated in this year's Senior GP Series - no issues at all.

The GOE ranged from +1.58 for the sixth element, the Curved Lift, to +2.88 for the seventh element, the Roller Lift-Stationary Lift. The latter had the highest Base Value of the programme, so it remained as the highest scoring element of the programme.

Incidentally, the eighth element, the Diagonal Step Sequence, had thesecond biggest GOE of the programme, at 2.84. And because it had the second highest Base Value, it remained as the second highest scoring element of the programme.

All the Judges marks were in the +2 to +4 range. The vast majority were +3, with eleven +2's; and seven +4's

Emilea and Vadym finished the Free Dance 5.04 points behind 2nd position, Piper GILLES / Paul POIRIER (CAN), and 1.52 points ahead of 4th position, Olivia SMART / Tim DIECK (ESP).

Overall, Emilea and Vadym finished 6.09 points behind 2nd position, Gilles / Poirier, and 3.96 points ahead of 4th position, Smart / Dieck.

Although I'm delighted that they got onto the podium, I'm gutted that they were only third. They should have been second, and Piper and Paul should have won.

A thing that should be noted is that Emilea and Vadym's Free Dance programme had the highest Base Value of the whole field. So, if things hadn't been so biased towards the winners, they could have stood a chance.

But, the main thing is that they have qualified for the Senior GP Final in Nagoya.

They are entered for this week's Challenger event, the Tallinn Trophy. Although there is not much travelling involved, as Tallinn is just across the water from Helsinki, it would mean they would be doing three events on consecutive weeks, which is not ideal. So, I hope they withdraw and instead concentrate on preparing themselves for the big one in Nagoya the following week.

I love their R&J, too. When I first learned that was their FD choice, I groaned, fearing something schmaltzy or hackneyed. But this FD is classical, elegant, and passionate -- but not at all saccharine.
