Evgeni Plushenko

^Tell me that's not real! He's already jumping?!

Can't understand a word either. But he looks younger and more relaxed than he did in Sochi, though that could just be because he shaved.

From Vera at the official forum (with google translate):
http://evgeni-plushenko.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9&start=1850#p83831

At the first training, he mainly just did some single jumps, spins, etc. but at the end of the session, he decided to take a chance and tried a triple. He said that certainly he has a thought of trying for his fifth (I almost wanted to add a [sic] here) Olympics, but it's too early to talk about that. First he needs to recover, to regain his condition, and then one can consider the possibility.

BTW, here is an interview of Evgeni's from the day when he first started training, right after the session, I'm not sure if I've seen it posted here yet:
http://www.rsport.ru/interview/20140522/747719027.html

In it, he seemed pleased with how the first training session went. Among other things, he also mentioned that when he was young, he had done 4Lz-3T-3Lo and 4S-3T-3Lo in training...

Sorry, I've been away from this thread a while...:)

By the way, I just wanted to mention something a little different, that I've actually been trying to work on for a while now: this amazing book about "charismatic art" I found, by an American professor called Stephen Jaeger, which tries to construct a whole theory of a type of art based on the sociological concept of "charisma". The author is an medievalist and the book has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with figure skating, but a lot of the things he said fits Plushenko incredibly well and really opened my eyes. Maybe it's a little crazy, but I've been thinking about this, and trying to work out an "artistic theory of Plushenko"...Of course, unfortunately I've also been procrastinating quite a bit, but hopefully, eventually I will try to write something up ;)

It good to see this thread moving along so well. :) For the video on his recent training session, I wish I knew what he was saying. Plushy looks so much happier and less stressed than in Sochi, so assuming he'll compete this season? (I still think that's crazy to do, though --because of how long he has been in this field)

I can't wait Whitebamboo! your writings are always very clever!

Truly seems to be an improvement versus when the screws were in his back... But eek, he wants a new quad?! It seems like he's half-joking, true, but... I can't help remembering poor Todd Eldridge, trying to learn the quad in his late twenties (I wasn't a fan of the guy's performances, but holy crap did I admire his courage and determination!) At least Plushy has the advantage of already having one quad, and having once had all the others.

But I'm glad he's not setting a definite goal, and will simply see how things go. But if he makes it to a record fifth Olympics, doesn't that mean Team Russia is either a) doing superbly and might as well as have him join the party or b) doing terribly and need him to keep holding the fort? Maybe I'm being too cynical.

So I was half-right about 3As in shows: not in Japan but yes China. And that was the jump that snapped the screw... What a crazy, incredible man.

I look forward to this, WhiteBamboo. I've actually read your Plushenkology blog (I'm one of those creepy lurking people ). I love, love your analyses, and I hope to read more of them in the future. You approached the Saint-Saens Medley and Tango Amore in ways I never thought about. Something recently triggered me to ponder the concept of "charisma" as well--though I haven't yet managed to link that to Plushy. I think it's a topic worthy of discussion... though I suspect the rest of the skating forum will think I'm crazy.

I also read your blog Whitebamboo :)
I'm doing commercial for it. Really deserves it http://plushenkology.tumblr.com/ great analysys

Short translation....

Plushy:
"Immediately after the first training on ice, I will go to Israel to doctors which will say to me what to do, and what not, and when.... I will have camp in Italy from 16.06., then shows in China, then probably i will go to camps in Turkey and Estonia...
I will train carefully, how much allows me the spine, i dont hurry nowhere... The new system requires changes in my skating. Skating went forward, and i should be at the level of the modern skating, so we will probably invite a new specialist for skating skills. I cant much the change myself, but there will be some novelties. If it will all, just for shows, or i can to get back to sport - we we'll see. I did not go anywhere, anyway."

he didn't mention Japan!

I hate it when there is no news of him.

Have a nice day! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEYtHcBrkEo He is cute!! In 2010 I saw some incredible video about the Japan tour when he met with his Japanese fans. ;) But the Japanese people are shy...and they deleted them..

Yes, I know - what does he mean by it, I wonder? Please, some spy sneak into his training sessions and see what he's doing! Almost makes you wish he'd give an interview and call someone "good average" again... okay, I kid, but it's been.... days since the last NEWS! Plushy thread. ;)

Plushyfan, thank you for sharing the videos. He always seems so sweet interacting with his fans. I think I would faint if I got a hug from him!

I have a few clips of his interviews for Japanese tv in my favorites - they're always so cute (I just love hearing him speak English). Here's one from 2010, I think. He talks about "doing the snorkeling" in Okinawa and getting chased by a umi hebi (sea snake). :)

This one is just awkward and hilarious  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocF2AnHiK8U

Yes. But that's a little bit comforting the Italian girls will go to Pinzolo training camp again.

Oops...:o: Let's try this again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OkznhR_Ijk

There are a few segments to this video, with some other skaters as well. Here's another part with Plushy and Akiko trying on eyeglasses for some reason
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kqu9-Ig3QsI

I think Plushy wasn't sure what was going on either - at first he says "it's ok, my eyes are fine!"

Yes, I believe he plans to start a skating school eventually. I can't of course say what kind of coach he would be - but I do think he would be a good one. He seems to be very good with children for one thing - for insstance, I really enjoyed the clips of him recently with Miyu Honda when he actually did coach her a little. Did you see any of those? Of course, there's more to coaching than that, but... fun to see nonetheless. :)

LOL, that interview with the water snake. "You know, I know how to swim... but at that moment, I swam like an Olympic champion."

Regarding coaching... I'm not sure I want to see him coach an established skater. Because if it doesn't work, that might make things awkward for his future coaching prospects (not to mention for him and the skater as well). But it'll be cool if he can open that school in St. Petersburg he spoke about, and coach kids from a young age, just like Mishin did with him. I don't know if he can get funding at this point, considering the situation in St. Petersburg.

For established skaters - I think you have a point. But I think he'd do well as a technical conultant, rather than taking someone on 100% as main coach.

As for his skating school - maybe, by the time he means to begin, the situation could have changed. Or maybe he is popular enough, and famous enough, to wrangle some cash out of them. Or/and Yana could help with her influence, perhaps? I don't know how these things work, or what kind of lobbying is required/can be done.

Technical consultant will probably work better. I expect him to eventually move on to main coach, but at this point he's still untested there. Plus, I have a nagging suspicion that Plush still believes in an "ideal skate" regardless of whether it's rewarded under COP (See: his short program layout, his desire to get Yuzu to do a quad-quad combo, him practicing the crazy 3A-4T and rumours that he's still doing 4-3-3 in practice...). I can't believe, after all these years, that IJS still doesn't reward jump combos... but incompetence sometimes has staying power.

I'm not an expert on the situation in St. Petersburg either, but it's looking pretty bad. Pairs are all moving off to Moscow, Mishin has only Petrov + Liza left... I can't help but wonder if the theory Aschiutza brought up many pages ago is the reason Plush is considering competing again. Maybe he wants to bring the spotlight--and money--back to St. Petersburg, so that he'll be able to get funding for his school in the future?

(Of course, he likely just wants to compete, period, if his health allows it. Even back when he announced his retirement, he said something like, "Age isn't the problem, but after twelve surgeries..." So if he thinks he can stay healthy, I don't think he cares if he's 15 or 35.)

Well, one can have many reasons for doing a thing...

(I generally do. I suppose appropriately, since I'm a libra :), I tend to weigh pros and cons before making a decision, trying to see it from all sides. So, when I've made my decision, I'm generally pretty unshiftable, as most counter arguments I've already thought of, or aren't weighty enough to shift my thinking. The thing though is that if you have many expanations for why you are doing a thing - or not doing a thing - people tend to think of those as "excuses".... sigh. This is totally OT, and a digression, by the way! :) )

I tend to weigh a bunch of options and wrestle with myself for a long time... but once a decision is made, I regret it immediately. The exception: if someone else tries to change my mind. Then I cling on to my first decision just to spite them.

...I hope Plushy isn't returning just to spite the haters. I'm not exactly a role model for decision-making.
