It's just a diminutive. It's just like how some William's go by Bill or Theodore by Ted, no different.

Yes, there are some generally followed rules for Russian diminutive forms, but that's true of any language and it's doubtful most Russians are even conscious of the rules beyond issues of formality (like how you don't call a business associate named Alexander that you just met Alex).

Edit: And yes, Zhenya is a common diminutive for Evgeni, as is Sasha for Alexander. The "a"-suffix to East-Slav names (like Aleksandr) is basically the equivalent of putting a "y" suffix in English - like Tommy.

Alexander Abt is also called Sasha a lot. We have a lot of nicknames in English that hardly resemble the actual name (like Hank for Henry, Jack for John-this one seems esp. strange since they're both one syllable :confused: etc.), so I never really questioned it. What I do find strange in Russian is how people often refer to the full first and middle name, eg. Tatiana Anatolyevna, Alexei Nikolayevich, etc. It seems like a mouthful...

Peggy or Peg as a nickname for Margaret is an example from English that seems completely nonintuitive to me.

Aside #1: A recent trend seems to be giving sons the legal name of Jack -- as opposed to John, with the intention of using Jack only as a nickname.

Aside #2: I like the Russian patronymics.
