Evgeni Plushenko

These moments need to be archived. Nobu-Evan moment, Plushy-Yagudin moment in GPF kiss and cry, Stojko-Eldredge handshake before taking to the ice in SLC...

That would be much appreciated. Thank you!

There is actually a new Plushy article today http://itar-tass.com/sport/1366099

Not much that we didn't know before, but he mentions that he has upcoming shows in Japan as well as Romania. As far as I know, the only Japanese show coming up is Shizuka's "Friends on Ice" from Aug. 22 - 24. So we may not have to suffer a long Plushy drought as I had anticipated. :)

The other new-ish tidbit is that the family ice show is definitely planned for late December and the title is "Snow King." Featuring skaters, acrobats, beautiful scenery, and "elements of magic."

Is this the translation of that article?:

Evgeni Plushenko: I felt good physically, performing the first quads

Two-time Olympic figure skating champion Evgeni Plushenko felt flawlessly in the physical plane without experiencing pain after the first execution of quadruple jumps after back surgery. About this athlete said in an interview for Itar-Tass after his return from show tour in Japan and China.

"Initially, we had planned only three shows. I've only just been started to train on ice after surgery. But anything do not disturb me, do not hurt me. That's why I'm after the first 3 shows with the organizers have decided that I will perform in more 8 shows. Half month ago in Japan, I jumped the first triple axel, and then, in Guangzhou in China, I made this Axel fifth time in a row, and then four times - a quadruple toe loop. After that, I felt good - felt myself as healthy man."
....

Evgeni Plushenko: In my head already matured program, which should to be done

"I train and prepare for the future, because in my plans is a return to the sport. In my head already matured program, which should to be done. I agree with my coach Alexei Mishin, who said that for for success is required whole arsenal of quadruple jumps. This the future of figure skating, and some skaters already doing a few different quads. But I have to work on their cleanliness.

I'm ready for sacrifice. Possible to set a new record! I like to do something new, something unreal. As we all know, on this planet, no one in the men's figure skating did not skate five times at the Olympics. If nothing do not disrupt me, I can create a new story. Till the end, my point in the sport I do not put, in relation to what happened at the Olympics in an individual event. I think this point can be set in South Korea. My family is ready for this. I think in the future we still will have children. And all of them will go with me to the competitions."

Currently Plushenko is planning two more appearances on the shows in Japan and Romania.
"In late of October, I was invited to China for a golf tournament. After skating, this is the second favorite sport for me. I just came from training - a whole day spent on the field today. Train and play with Vera Shimanskaya, the Olympic champion in Rhythmic gymnastics group exercises. She is engaged in professional golf for ten years. My passion for hockey, in this connection, somehow receded into the background."

In late December, the athlete plans to premiere a new show on the ice.
"Now I have plans for a big project - a family show-tale "Snow King ", a project with a large budget. There will appear and skaters, and acrobats. Will be the beautiful scenery, and even elements of magic. The premiere will take place in December."

Is there any rule for the short name that your family call you in Russian? I mean Plushy is called Zhenya... It's his short name?

It's just a diminutive. It's just like how some William's go by Bill or Theodore by Ted, no different.

Yes, there are some generally followed rules for Russian diminutive forms, but that's true of any language and it's doubtful most Russians are even conscious of the rules beyond issues of formality (like how you don't call a business associate named Alexander that you just met Alex).

Edit: And yes, Zhenya is a common diminutive for Evgeni, as is Sasha for Alexander. The "a"-suffix to East-Slav names (like Aleksandr) is basically the equivalent of putting a "y" suffix in English - like Tommy.

Alexander Abt is also called Sasha a lot. We have a lot of nicknames in English that hardly resemble the actual name (like Hank for Henry, Jack for John-this one seems esp. strange since they're both one syllable  etc.), so I never really questioned it. What I do find strange in Russian is how people often refer to the full first and middle name, eg. Tatiana Anatolyevna, Alexei Nikolayevich, etc. It seems like a mouthful...

Peggy or Peg as a nickname for Margaret is an example from English that seems completely nonintuitive to me.

Aside #1: A recent trend seems to be giving sons the legal name of Jack -- as opposed to John, with the intention of using Jack only as a nickname.

Aside #2: I like the Russian patronymics.

Thank you very much. I have been wondering about his short name for years. :)
