Evgeni Semenenko

Whatever it means, Zhenya is skating at the ice show today
Please no quads.

Ilya Averbukh plans to work on Zhenya's programs next season.

I've been thinking about this potential collaboration for about a year. It's very interesting to see what will come of it.

Averbukh has choreographed FP for Zhenya

Some info about the program from Averbukh's interview:
>Four quads are planned including 4Lo.
>It's in the same style as Frost, which Averbukh really liked. The music is also kpop.
>A lot of choreo was created by Zhenya himself. Averbukh directed the program more, saying what he liked and what he didn't like.

New interview!

— Firstly, Zhenya, how are you feeling now? Are there any after-effects of the injury, or is it completely gone?

— At the moment everything is fine, thank you. It's been quite some time since the injury.

— Can you tell us about what happened at the show? Did you manage to understand what happened?

— There have been many descriptions of possible causes for the fall, so I will answer this question myself so as not to return to this topic again. There are almost always two blue and one red line on the ice surface - marking. After the blue lines there is always an area where difficult elements are most often performed, and that time there was no such area. During the jump entry, when I passed the red line, I realized that there wasn’t enough room for a toe loop and the jump would be on the audience. So, I made a decision to change the toe loop entry, because of this changed the axis, and because of the axis - such a fall happened.

— Did lights and sound interfere with you?

— I have always jumped quads jumps in all shows I participated in, and special factors were taken into account. Then those factors didn’t lead to a fall.

— An accident, then?

— Yes, probably, because no one plans a bad thing. Was it possible to avoid it with the usual size of the surface - yes, probably it was. But I also understand that the ice wasn’t reduced on purpose to make me fall. There is no one to blame.

— Do you have a good relationship with organizers of the show?

— Yes, I want to avoid questions and comments to the show's organizers. I have known Evgeni Plushenko for a long time and I respect him not only as a famous figure skater, but also as a person. The criminal case about my injury was closed as soon as I was discharged from the hospital - I wrote a statement about absence of claims. Yes, by the way, that is my position, my decision, there is no financial interest here, and help was offered from the show's organizers, but I refused. Everything turned out fine, as the neurosurgeons said that I am very lucky, and this unpleasant incident should be forgotten.

— I know the psychology of many athletes who, despite the pain after a fall, get up at all costs and continue skating. Have you felt anything like that?

— I didn’t feel anything at first, I was unconscious. There is always a responsibility to the audience during all performances, and at that show there were especially many fans - I was supposed to perform in my hometown. When I regained consciousness, I regretted that so many people had to worry about what had happened.

— What happened when the audience and cameras stopped seeing you?

— On the way to the hospital, I had already regained consciousness (smiles).

— Was the uncertainty of the diagnosis a little scary for you at one point?

— No, there was nothing like that.

— When in hospital did you first think it was time to skating and preparing for your exams?

— As soon as I arrived at the hospital (laughs).

— When did you eventually return to training on ice?

— I was on ice for the first time on May 3rd. The training session went well, but afterwards I felt a bit strange. At the next training session everything was already fine.

— How was the decision made to perform in "Favourite songs about the main thing" show as early as 7 May? It hadn't been long since you were discharged and had your first training session.

— The decision to take part in the show wasn’t an easy one: I insisted, I didn’t want to end the season on a sad note; the neurosurgeons were on my side and gave their consent. By the way, one of the department's neurosurgeons is a PhD student at our university, we exchanged contacts, and we even agreed to let me attend surgeries as a medical student. I just don’t have enough time for now, maybe I will be able to do it in summer. But I had to persuade Alexei Nikolayevich, Tatiana Nikolayevna and my mother. It was important for me to perform, thanks to Ilya Averbukh for giving me this opportunity, and my gratitude to the audience - they gave me a very warm welcome. After the show, Alexei Nikolayevich called me and said that it had been the right decision.

— All this time since the injury, your support has been tremendous. Was it a surprise to you?

— I was very pleased. I received many gifts and very many messages. The presents are different: souvenirs, soft toys, portraits, anime clothes, albums with photos and wishes for recovery, a whole box of letters from fans from Russia, China, Japan, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia and Mexico. I also received music written for me from a fan who is a musician. I would like to say a special thank you to the fans and organizers of Russian and Chinese fan clubs. I am very grateful to everyone! So much positivity from the people - it also contributed to my recovery.

— Is it true that they brought you a lot of sweet things and you fed them to the whole ward? Your coaches told me about that.

— Not the whole ward, of course (laughs). I was brought a lot of fruit, sweets, someone brought a kilo of pine nuts. And the time of hospitalization was Easter and I was given very beautiful original handmade kulichs. I couldn't eat all of them myself, so I just treated people to them.

— What are your immediate plans for your vacation and training?

— The immediate goal is to have a productive training camp in Kislovodsk, I am here now. The programs for next season are choreographed. We finished the free program just a week ago. I was lucky enough to work with Ilya Averbukh. It's an exciting new relationship and collaboration for me, and I hope audience enjoys the new program. After the cancellation of the World Championships for Russian athletes, in consultation with the coaches and the dean of the university, it was decided not to take academic leave. I missed a month of classes when I was taking part in the Olympics. Now a lot of energy and time is being devoted to my studies. The university helps me with organizational matters, but no indulgences in terms of quality of knowledge. I've caught up with a lot, but some subjects still remain. Exams are at the end of June.

— Training camps, trainings, exams - that's all understandable. But what about vacation, Zhenya?

— I really want to take a rest. I haven't had a summer vacation for a long time. The year before last - a pandemic, and last year I had to take the unified state exams and go to university. So, it's been three years without a proper holiday. It has been a difficult season both in sports and studies. I hope to have a vacation in July.

Glad to hear Zhenya is doing well after his injury. I admit, I was worried to see him back performing in shows so soon after the concussion, but of course he himself, his doctors and coaches know best. Ending the season on a positive note is also very important for the mindset going into the preparation for his next starts.
