Finland's national championships will be hold 15th-17th December 2023 at Pirkkalan Jäähalli, Helsinki, senior's and junior's, all disciplines but pairs only in seniors as there is only one pair who is skating in seniors. In men, women and Id are both juniors and seniors.

There placements are not important when representatives to Euros are chosen, scores play more role according to rules. In men it is very tight so nationals are important for them and in women I think Nella Pelkonen practically - not officially - already has confirmed her spot but the second spot will be between Janna and Emmi.

Here is statictis who is leading the statistics who will be chosen to bigger competitions.

Result page

There will a stream, but it costs something, don't know yet what as I can watch it through another channel.

In junior men is one skater at own category "kilpailun ulkopuolella" = outside the competition. I have been wondering why and only reason I can think must be that that skater has not Finland's citizenship.

Yep, you're right. Pavlo Klimin is Polish.

His last competition for Poland was the EYOF at the end of January. So, if he is switching countries, he is still under embargo.

Of course, he might just be taking an opportunity of getting another competition under his belt. But, given that 4 Nationals is at the same time, I doubt it. It does look like he is switching to Finland.

But that rule citizenship is demanded, must be only on juniors. Milania and Filippo got national title in pairs last year when Filippo was not yet able to compete internationally.

I'm going on Saturday and Sunday. Pirkkola rinks are in my neighborhood so I have just a short walk there.

Very exciting competition between Emmi and Janna and also between Valtter and Makar for Europeans` spots. Nella is already safe I think. Emmi has a strong lead of 30 points over Janna at the moment so Janna really needs to skate clean but still it might not be enough. Valtter and Makar are almost on par at the moment in the qualifications scores.

It will also be fun to see our ice dancers and their brilliant programs at their home rink. They train in Pirkkola. I am looking forward to see our juniors too. Nice that Matias Lindfors is listed too. I think he was injured some time ago.

Intersting situation in men as Makar, I think, had the best skate ever I have seen from him and is now leading by 4 points ahead of Valtter. To get a spot to Euros that would be enough for Makar. So the one who will hold his nerves tomorrow will get the spot, but if both Makar and Valtter skate clean I think Makar has a slight advance due to the more difficult jumping combos.

Jari Krestyanikov was maybe a little surprise of the day by his 3rd place leaving national team skaters behin; edit: fully rotated 3A was his strength, a little bit scratchy landing but no urs. Matias L. seems not to be in best shape. Has he grown?

I think have never seen anybody to start SP by two spins (the skater who is at last place). Not a good idea.

Some opinion, only my own. Finland has usually skaters as they would have been scored in international competitions during last years. This time I think all top three were a bit overscored compared internationally. Olivia deserves her lead but Emmi with popped axel and 3T-2T combo should not be ahead of clean Oona. Pihla Bergman maybe was a little bit underscored, maybe because she is not a member of national team, one judge gave to Pihla 6.75-7.00 while others gave 5.25-6.00, so I feel they just decreased -1 because favorism of national team skaters. Emmi's presentation is worth of good PCS but I don't see her skating skills be better than others.

Edit: I mean women were overscored, and maybe also Valtter and Makar, as they don't score so much internationally. Makar had best skate of her life, but 74+ without 3a or quad, I am not sure if there is a couple of extra points, and Valtter with 3T-3T combination 70+, I think similar skate internationally has given him 67-68. Other's scores were ok IMO. Makar and Valtter got 35.91 and 35.90 from PCS, so it is the TES and clean programs which is the solution who gets the Euro's spot.

Here is more accuarete translation of Janna's comment because of her WD:

I've had problems with my skates, and my feet have been hurting because of it. Yesterday my right ankle sprained so much that I couldn't do anything. It's sad, but life goes on, Janna Jyrkinen says.

I guess that means Janna won´t be at Euros? :( She needed Nationals to improve her score so I guess the other spot goes to Emmi.

Not sure if Olivia can actually go ahead of Emmi with her other results?

I just calculated in my head Olivia needs 184+ if Emmi doesn't improve hers. I don't know if it is realistic. Women's Fs just started so we will know in couple of hours.

Women's last group have not yet skated, but I don't write about them before national TV has shown the collasion as I know some Finnish forum members will watch only it. Men has already shown there, so I can write about it. The cleanest skater today was Arttu, but as our commentators said when I rewatched him during the warm-up in women, he needs more speed. Arttu's TES was best of the day and he made only a couple tiny mistakes but mostly clean - needs just more difficulty in the future. Neither Valtter or Makar was clean, and Valtter won the free just. But it was not enough and Makar should get the spot to Euro's just by 3,01 points and the difficulty content of the SP was the main thing here. But overall, best competition in nationals men in ages, or ever. Jari K has potential. He has grown, I think during couple of years quite a lot, so maybe he will find confidence in the future. He should make it to national team next season after this season if he continues the level he has been this season, so I suppose it means better conditions and camps in training. So mens' final results are 1. Makar, 2. Valtter, 3. Arttu.

Happy for Makar if he gets the Euro spot. In that case it's his first senior championships. Well deserved. I like his skating a lot.

Nella won overall and won the free by almost clean skate but doubled couple of jumps which were planned to be triples but everything else was clean, no urs and she got all positive goes. Emmi had quite a disaster skate, but according to rules given the 2nd spot goes to her, as Olivia scored 17. She placed 4th and I am not sure about her scores. But almost everybody - maybe - got a little bit national extra. Oona got best TES today, was 2nd in the free and 3rd Overall. Olivia got silver, was 3rd overall. Linnea Ceder has usually been good at nationals, but this time it was not her day. Minja Peltonen finally jumped her 3lz-3lo clean, she has tried it several times but I think this was maybe 2nd time the attempt fully succeeded when I have seen her to go for it (Minja was 4th at FS, 5th overall).

I also thought that scores seemed little high, but I am somewhat out of loop about international points levels, so...
Quality of the ladies was pretty good IMO even if Janna was absent. Lots of good jumping, though many still need to improve their skating and presentation. In that respect Emmi Peltonen tops the others, unfortunately her LP went haywire, she two-footed or underrotated almost all her jumps.

I want to see Pelkonen-Peltonen-Peltonen triplet get sent to some international competition, as it would cause marvellous confusion with the commentators and audiences

What I know Emmi and Minja are not related. Emm's little sister is Nelli and she is a synchro skater. I read an article about the family once.

National TV showed delightfully much this time. But as usual evening posts don't have written anything on the internet versions. Absolutely nothing, not even a tiny article. They pay attention to Fs only when there are scandals - or they have an opportunity to make a scandal from nothing - or certain skaters win something. This time medalists seemed not to be interesting enough.

Yeah, Kiira & Laura still generate about five times more headlines than our active skaters combined; a sad state of affairs, in a way. But our current crop has ECh medal potential, if not this season, then the next. Maybe things will change.
