Men FS

I think that the 6th and final placement to qualify for the GPF could come down to a tiebreaker with Andrei Griazev (RUS) and Kevin Van Der Perren (BEL). That is if Griazev finishes 3rd place at NHK. If he gets silver behind Takahashi, Griazev is in the GPF and Kevin Van Der Perren will be OUT

So in order for Van Der Perren to make the final, Griazev will need to finish 3rd at NHK to tie VDP in points and hope to win the tiebreaker or Griazev will need to finish 4th at NHK.

Griazev main competition at NHK will be, 1.) Daisuke Takahashi (JPN) 2.) Tomas Verner (CZE) 3.) Sergei Davydov (BEL)

A 2nd and 4th always beats two 3rds. So if Griazev is 3rd at NHK he is out of the final in favor of Van Der Perren.

WOW Lambiel really got a bonus on the PCS! No way they should be that high with a flawed program!
And when was the last time Jeff did not medal at a GP event! Let's hope this really is a building year for him. Cause if not then I'd say he's no longer top 10 at worlds!

Congratulations to Johnny! Great season so far. As to Lambiel, I'm wondering if his knees are giving out again. He has had surgery on both in the past so it wouldn't be surprising if he needs more surgery.

Well, that was what I was thinking too after CoC - but the parts between his jumps are still amazing, he is not like some skaters, especially Johnny himself, who fall apart after one or too mistakes. The spins are still great, the footwork, the interpretation, the movements of his entire body - Stéphane just does not lose it after a mistake.

Though, what I do not understand how the PCS (not in this case) are always about the same for every aspect. For example it should be possible that someone has a great interpretation, but his skating skills (e.g. edging) are just not the best. Or the choreography could be great, but the performance and execution a bit sloppy. But the way the judges judge  it, it always seems like just one mark, just one evaluation of everything - there is never more range than 0.75. And in my opinion that is somewhat improbable - this skater has got a good interpretation so he also has good transitions, good execution etc.

Griazev MUST finish 2nd at NHK to guarantee a place in the final.
Carriere and Davydov each have 9 points, and a silver medal could put either one in a tiebreaker with Van Der Perren. However, Carriere would have to score 210.98 at NHK to beat VDP's total score, and Davydov, 225.56. As a new Senior skater, Carriere can't command the high PCS scores he'd need to score that high, and Davydov, although technically competent, is a ho-hum skater presentation-wise and he couldn't muster enough points either.

Chipeur with 7 points and Verner with 5 have no shot at the final, but they could act as spoilers.

So it looks as if Griazev is the only one who 'controls his own destiny'. But that just adds to the pressure that I'm sure the RFSF is putting on him to make the final. And Griazev is far from being the most consistent skater around.

The Men's GPF should be:
TAKAHASHI
WEIR
CHAN
LYSACEK
LAMBIEL
VAN DER PERREN or GRIAZEV

Oh yeah, could be that indeed. In that case I'll go for Griazev and not for van der Perren.

Actually, Johnny pretty much maxed out his program in terms of how many points you can get without a quad. Setting aside the downgrade on the solo triple Axel, he did two 3A's, two 3Lz's, plus flip, loop, Salchow, toe and 2A.

Does Kevin Reynolds have a triple Axel? If he had a 3A and a 3A combo to go with his quad Sal and quad toe, he'd be in the mix despite the low PCSs.

I believe he does. And 2 quads too, like a 'real man' (). With all that great stuff he's 8th.

Since CoC, Johnny's upgraded his two step sequences, all of his spins are level4 now, and he added a 2L to make his 3Z2T a 3-jump combination.

But he's still not quite maxed out. Johnny underrotated his solo 3A at CoR. If he hadn't done that, he would have had 156.53 points. If he tacked on a 3T to his 3S or 3F, for a third combination, he'd get another 4 points, pushing his possible score above 160 without a quad.

But what he really needs to do is take out the 3S and add a 4/3 combination, which would bring him up to 165 points. Then if he replaced the 3L with a solo quad, he'd be pushing 170.

Laugh if you will, but see, even a little slip of a girl like Mao Asada or Yukari Nakano can do a triple Axel. So, if you call yourself a man, you don't want to be known as a "quadless wonder."

You don't want to be Ulrich Salchow barely able to eke out a disputed win over Madge Sayers!

If he tacked on a 3T to his 3S or 3F, for a third combination, he'd get another 4 points, pushing his possible score above 160 without a quad.
But that would give him a second 3T, along with repeated 3A's and 3Lz's.

Didn't little Miki hit a quad sal in 2002? Has she been calling herself a man ever since?

Why not? The quad has got to be the most overrated mark of figure skating excellence since .... well, ever. They tend to destroy the flow of a program whether or not the skater lands them. I'd be perfectly happy if they disappeared completely.

Why would a quad destroy a flow of the program, it takes a milisecond longer to land than a triple and I've seen more than one skater that the quad has not stop them to keep the flow oof the program.
I don't think it's overrated, if anything CoP has diminished its importance, a quad it's not THAT much points over a 3a. And a quad should not disappeared because figure skating is an sport and like any other sport, you should always try to go forward.

The grim jumping pass before most quads is a black hole that sucks my enthusiasm for the program away. If the skater falls, it's a downer, if they hit it still wrecks most skaters' timing. Blechhhh

And skating isn't just a sport, it's a discipline (meaning how things are done is at least as important than doing 'more', not belated crackdown on takeoff edge sloppiness that's endemic among the ladies).

I am not sure where you come up with that figure, unless you are projecting an estimated GOE or PCS increase (which is fine since I also do that) however given that you gave such a specific decimal score I dont think that is what you did. He scored 2.38 for his flawed/downgraded solo triple axel. A solo triple axel base value is 7.5. So it would be an automatic gain of 5.12 which added to a 149.81 brings you to a 154.93, that is before you guess on any GOE gain (again I only assume you didnt since you gave such a fractionally specific score).

But he's still not quite maxed out.

You are right on that but some of the jump layouts you state would not be allowable. You are only allowed to repeat 2 different kinds of quads or triples jumps so:

If he tacked on a 3T to his 3S or 3F, for a third combination, he'd get another 4 points, pushing his possible score above 160 without a quad.

He already is doing 2 triple axels and 2 triple lutzes. Thus he cannot do a 2nd triple toe as well. He either could add a double toe to something for a 3rd combination, or if he adds a triple toe he would have to change the 2nd triple lutz into another double axel.

But what he really needs to do is take out the 3S and add a 4/3 combination, which would bring him up to 165 points.

Again he is already doing 2 triple axels and 2 triple lutzes. So he cant do a combination that ends with at triple toe (or triple loop for that matter) unless he changes the 2nd triple lutz to a double axel.

Then if he replaced the 3L with a solo quad, he'd be pushing 170.

In this case he would have 2 quads, 2 triple axels, 2 triple lutzes, and 2 triple toes. You are only allowed to have 2 of 2 of those 4 jumps.
