Patrick Chan

I think Patrick should be invited not because of his team gold medal, but because of his great contribution to the sport of figure skating.
 
If the organizers truly appreciate figure skating they would have invited Patrick, just as Elladj is usually invited regardless of his low placement. But this is the Olympics, and protocol is followed. To the world, the OGM is the best skater and the rest is ranked according to placements. This is the way Mens skating is now; whoever racks up the most points with quads is recognized as the best. This is also why I don't care anymore.

I'm very happy that Patrick is happy and enjoying this Olympics. It doesn't matter how others look at him and his results and demand justification for his joy. Happiness is a choice and Patrick chooses it.

Like his parents, I witnessed and supported Patrick's journey and growth from a talented youngster into a great winner and now a kind compassionate and wise young man. So very proud of him and confident of his continued success in his life journey.

The free skate "burned" in that gentleman's mind and he felt "love, sorrow, forgiveness and hope" because of it.

Now that is art! And that is Patrick's ability to touch the hearts of his audience with his skating! :agree:

This reaction is exactly what Patrick cited for his reason to skate and as the true measure of his success. He wanted to touch hearts, enthrall, and incite emotions. Goal achieved. Many times over.

That's a nice interview with Meagan. Just my guess, but if Patrick had an individual medal short of the gold, I think he still would prefer the team gold. While it's true that to Patrick the team OGM is valuable and he shouldn't have to defend it, unfortunately he's already made statements to that effect. In North America we like to pride ourselves as individuals with the attitude of, "who cares what they think?" But it does matter. Did you see what TSL said about Patrick? I hope the majority of people have Doug Haw's view about it.

I think it should be both. But either way, he deserves to be invited!

By the way, I just crunched the individual event scores and found that if the highest ones from each discipline (from each country that entered the team event) were used to determine the team medals, the outcome would have still been the same: Team Canada would have still gotten the Gold, OAR the Silver, and then USA the Bronze - no different! Japan would have been 4th and China 5th.

So Patrick and all of Team Canada can be proud, because they really were the strongest national team - in both the individual and team events!!
 
I’m so sad he won’t be performing at the gala. I was hoping since he was retiring and was such a phenom for so long, contributing so much to this sport that he would have been asked.
Maybe they asked and he declined?
Nathan got the flu and had to withdraw from it. Was Misha his replacement?
So sad, was hoping for one more skate from him.

Misha was on the list from the beginning. I think that he was asked and decline, or he wasn´t asked.

I like to think that he declined, considering that he is having so much fun watching the hockey with Moir.

I wouldn't think that's the case. Patrick was not on the list from the beginning. Moir also watched the hockey game. So that's not a reason to decline the invitation.

Patrick wasn’t on the invited list that was issued, so he wasn’t selected to begin with (Nathan was, but he declined because he was sick). But when you think about it, Caro was not invited as well, and she’s also a long time FS champion.
So they only take individual events into account (and popularity, Misha is loved world-wide, even more in Asia), FS being an individual sport (which also put even more question into the point of Team Event). At least, Patrick got to enjoy the rest of the Games quietly. Since it’s his last, that gave him more time to do whatever he wanted.

I noticed not only the speed and flow and ice coverage, but also the hush over the crowd. They clapped or cheered a bit for each jump, but otherwise they seemed to be watching in a trance, enthralled. It was similar to what P&C created with their Pyeongchang FD. It just so happens that Guillaume and Patrick are widely considered as the two skaters with the best skating skills. They skate similarly, with a similar style, and create similar effects. In fact, it was P&C's 2015 FD that helped shape Patrick's main desires for his comeback. I LOVED all three podium FDs in Pyeongchang, but each created a different atmosphere in the arena. The Shibs's FD was about celebration and the crowd felt their joy of skating together, V&M's FD was about passionate closeness and the crowd cheered loudly, and P&C's FD was about contemplation and the crowd was stunned into thoughtful silence (I know I was). I'm thrilled with the order the three teams finished in, but much more importantly, they all won that night. They created their own different amazing moments. It seems uncommon nowadays to say that you love both V&M and P&C (many people love to pick sides), but I truly do love both of them. They are so different in what they do on the ice that I find them equally amazing. (I didn't like P&C's SD this year, but I ended up LOVING both FDs).

This tangent is all to say that Patrick chose to wow the audience this season by making them think. If they didn't want to think or choose to think, that's their loss. I find myself very enriched by these programs from Patrick. I'm so grateful Patrick gave them to us, even though they were never perfect. In a way, their imperfections made them perfect in my eyes. The songs are about the imperfectness of mortal life, so how appropriate that the programs, like life itself, were never delivered perfectly. Each one had moments of beauty that I am choosing to see in the midst of the imperfections. This season with Patrick has been about searching for and discovering perfect moments in the midst of an imperfect whole. I've been thinking about this idea ever since his last skate, and I'm not done thinking about it. Patrick has no idea how profoundly he has impacted all of his fans, including me. :yes: :ghug: :)

Did anyone happen to save the Rtube video of Patrick's individual LP? It is gone now, because I just checked. :( I would prefer to save a video with no commentary, but I'll save CBC's if no one has it without commentary.

The individual SP on VK now says "access denied." Oh the joys of Olympic copyright. :ohwell: CBC to the rescue again, although I'd prefer no commentary at all.

ETA: I'm not too unhappy, because for most of both programs, CBC was silent. Bravo!!!
