Patrick Chan

well Tat just went back up in my esteem.. her words seem true and sincere and pretty much match my feelings towards Patrick.... never before, never after will there be such a skater.... 4everchan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Patrick fans : Patrick is skating a small version of Hallelujah for SOI... it's wonderful... perfect... gorgeous... i cried.... i am sure videos will leak but if you have a chance to go... both of his numbers and all his cameos/group appearances were stellar... he was truly on and looked very happy to skate... moments i will cherish forever.

Your post alone was almost enough to start my tears, and then watching the program they came for real. It's not often that a competitive program (especially an LP) is brought back as an Ex, but it has happened for us. Oh my word, we really have come full circle with this program. Back in July, we were like, "WHY IN THE WORLD DID PATRICK PICK THIS MUSIC???" And now we're like, "Thank you for this gem, Patrick! We can't imagine you doing anything else for your last LP! This is the most beautiful thing we've ever seen!" What a ride! As far as the jump journey, Onyx was super early so Patrick marked a lot of the jumps. And then at SC, he had his worst jump outing ever. For the rest of the season, he fought for it as much as he could but it wasn't ideal. Now here we are, beyond the constraints of competition, and we got perfection in the jumps at last. He did a beautiful 3T, 2A, and 3F, and skated with so much more freedom than he did all season!!!

I am SO PLEASED with all the moments he retained for the Ex!!!!! :hap10: BOTH ACTUAL STEP SEQUENCES!!! I never thought I'd see that level of steps from him ever again! :thank:  THE SIT SPIN AND THE CAMEL SPIN!!! THE PART WHERE HE TURNS SLOWLY AND MATCHES THOSE NOTES (i.e. the part where the camera caught him smiling at Nationals). And the combo spin, even better because he didn't look exhausted during it. Essentially, it was all my favorite Hallelujah moments with none of the anxiety about the jumps!!! :hap85: As 4everchan said, it was perfect!!! I think this is the Hallelujah Patrick always wanted to give us. HE WAS SO FREE AND SMOOTH AND EVERY LITTLE DETAIL WAS DONE TO THE FULLEST!!! :yes2:

In this video from Ottawa, you can see the very beginning of the program. The lights come up after the breath in the music and then Patrick turns around twice, puts one foot behind the other while looking down, and then skates away to the rest of the program. I like this opening more than what's in the LP! Otherwise, the Montreal video is better (clearer/closer and without the stepout on the 3F). These are the only 2 fancams I can find so far (and no "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" yet). Hopefully more fancams will turn up. And both numbers better be on CBC's broadcast.

4everchan, I am so happy for you!!! If I lived in Canada, I would totally try to go! :( I am so grateful for the internet! :)

ETA: I just read your BEAUTIFUL recap in The Edge and wanted to bring over this paragraph: "One of the things that was obvious in his skating is exactly that...he has gone to the other side... where he can enjoy his skating again... where he is no longer judged or assigned a number of points.... He is where the artist wants to be.... exploring his own path, and enjoying every moment of it..." My heart is so happy!!!!! I could sense what you've described in the way that Patrick did that Hallelujah. He seemed so at peace with skating, at peace with himself, at peace with everything.

thank you skatingfan4ever for your very nicely written post. I enjoyed reading it and yes, the Montreal performance was just flawless. For the last spin, the combo spin, I think that the position that tires him is the middle height sit spin... he replaced that position in there with something else... spin wise though, can you imagine seeing patrick and jeff in the same show? omg... i was only missing stephane and adam's layback for a complete showdown.

Patrick's Lovers in a Dangerous Time (Toronto), filmed by Bing Chan:

Thank you for bringing this here! Here's Hallelujah from Bing Chan. The best 3F is still Montreal. ;) 4everchan, you were so, so fortunate! :agree2:

In addition to making us cry, Patrick can also make us laugh. WATCH THIS!!! "We're so excited I'm eating candy!" Oh, Patrick, thank you so much for being you! :luv17:

The Montreal audience was the best too! According to a fan, who attended all the shows in Montreal, Toronto and Hamilton, the Montreal audience' cheering was the loudest, and they gave standing ovation to all the skaters. The tour should include Montreal every year!

Oh my goodness, Bev Smith does it again!!! That letter from his parents was way more significant than we knew. Now I understand more why Patrick seemed so surprised that he was crying, on camera to boot. I had no idea he barely spoke to his mom for years. This also brings added meaning and significance, for me, to his tearful, lengthy tribute to them in his retirement speech. Holy cow. He has grown so much just within the last few months.

One thing makes me nervous, though. I hope he doesn't go into real estate and stop skating completely. Life doesn't come with any guarantees, so who knows what will happen. Patrick himself doesn't know.

My favorite lines in the article are, "His time is his time now. Hallelujah." He has the time to enjoy skating, enjoy life, and skate in a way that allows him to do each moment of the program to the fullest. I rewatched the Hallelujah Ex a few times today and was struck by how much he takes his time with each position and movement and makes sure it's finished before doing the next one. Significant pauses, FTW! He did that in competition to a degree, but I noticed it even more in the Ex because he's not worried about doing jumps or fitting everything in. His arms and hands and lines are sublime, especially when he takes his time. Literally every moment of that Ex is a beautiful, FINISHED image. I have a couple blog posts about Patrick and this season in mind. They'll be done in a month or two. So much material and food for thought from this season. I'll do my best to present my thoughts in an organized way (less fangirly than what I do here, meaning less exclamation points and less capital letters ). That's part of why it will take me a while. Wish me luck! ;) The thread will go on for at least that long haha. I have a lot left to say (and I wasn't even planning on doing this post, but Bev Smith always finds a way to give me another occasion to ramble about Patrick).

Enjoy the rest of your Hallelujah Tour, Patrick! You so deserve it! :agree2:

Apparently, Bev Smith was there in Montreal and wrote a tear-inducing review. This is the bit about Patrick, who got one of the two standing ovations of the night (the other was for V&M's Moulin Rouge): "The other standing ovation went to Patrick Chan, who skated his Olympic free program, 'Hallelujah,' just the way he likes it, not riddled by endless jumps, just mostly Chan-like skating. Here, at Stars On Ice, this program was at its most powerful." Well said, Bev Smith. Well said. :agree:

Oh, right. That makes more sense. I was reading quickly because I was on my way out the door. It's kinda surprising to me that, according to Bev Smith, Toronto gave out only two standing ovations. I'm glad Patrick got one.

I watched early Patrick's competitions and I have a question. Patrick beat Jeffrey Battle in 2008 at Nats, but later Jeffrey became 1st in World, Patrick became 9st or 8st... What happened at Nats FS, Jeffrey fell? I didn't find protocols and Jeffrey's FS on youtube.

lovers in a dangerous time in Korea: Patrick has grown up so quickly in this program... already from seeing it 3 weeks ago i can see he is projecting more and he is more one with the music... wow!!!!

nice korean fans there, appreciating Patrick's skating : edges and steps getting cheers.... i wouldn't say the Hallelujah was as good as Montreal's performance from seeing it here on this fancam but it's not too shabby either...

thanks for sharing.. i had a blast watching those fan cams

I agree that the Hallelujah wasn't as good, but I love the quality of this fancam! Did you notice, he put another 3T where the 3F was? It's a bit disappointing, but he landed it clean so maybe 3T is easier for him on tired legs. Or he just wasn't in the mood to do a 3F? Lovers in a Dangerous Time also had two 3Ts. I watch each Hallelujah wondering if it will be better than Montreal, but that hasn't happened yet.

Lovers in a Dangerous Time was AMAZING!!! My favorite version so far. I could feel his joy and projection even on the fancam without extreme closeups. He hit the musical nuances. And I certainly give a standing O to the crowd!!! :luv17: Clapping for edges and gliding and steps is my kind of crowd, although I would probably be too mesmerized to cheer during the program. ;)

Those are FANTASTIC fancams!!!

I said Lovers in a Dangerous Time at ATS was so obviously expressive even without closeups, but lo and behold, here is the broadcast version. (The same person also posted Hallelujah, if you're interested). I am smiling as wide as I can smile!!! There are aspects of the fancam I like more (i.e. hearing the music and hearing the cheers and no commentary), but the camera angles of the broadcast, for the most part, are to die for!!!!! PATRICK'S SMILE!!!!! :luv17::luv17::luv17: THE EXUBERANCE IN EVERY STEP!!!!! :hap10: I don't know the last time I saw him skate LIKE THIS!!! He is SO HAPPY on the ice, with the stress completely gone!!! He described this program as a reflection on his career and learning empathy, and I am thrilled that the overriding emotion, looking back, is JOY!!!!! :yay: The joy also comes from looking forward to the future. He skates here with the maturity of an experienced, well-seasoned skater and with the pure excitement of a young skater just starting out.

i can think of one program where he was as happy and it was worlds SP beatles... i was amazed by how well he had reached the zone then and how well he was performing in harmony with music, life, everything...
