Patrick Chan

well you were wrong guru ;) it's his new costume and if Patrick deserves better, I think it's perfectly suited to the music.... simple... contemporary. No fluff... no lettuce ;) no feathers ;)

The result speaks louder and trumps all your arguments.

I do agree a pair of matching pants may just turn things around.

The SP and 4S were great steps forward! In spite of the skepticism surrounding Marina pre-season, I think it is clear the consensus was wrong--he is on the right track. Patrick's always given me the impression that he has a long view to his comeback and it's working. Tonight there was some bad juju all around for the last set of skaters.

As a person who is kind of shortsighted though, I have to admit I've never wanted to shove someone through an open door this much!

Awwwww. :console:

He will put that beautiful 4S in a beautifully skated program next. Patrick always gets his goals accomplished in steps. Once his tool chest is complete, he crafts a masterpiece.

This season, I'd like for him to peak at Worlds rather than in Canada, at least score wise.

Looking forward to seeing the program despite the errors. Fuel to the doubters' fire, I'm sure, but I don't care about that anymore (and never should have, really). Keep working, Patrick, but enjoy the knowledge that you did a clean SP that put you right in the mix and that you landed the 4S.

The quad salchow was beautiful! The toe, though, was a disaster, even in the short was not that good. I' m looking forward to read what he'll say.

I was sad for him, but impressed that he "seems" to handle disappointments as these better than he appeared to in past? The results were shocking to me. The falls were so uncharacteristic! This season's free skate is such a beautiful program for him.

I was proactive and went to the Video and Results thread and watched the video (Russian commentary with Tarasova, I believe, but all after the program). I like the costume a lot actually and all the blue stands out well, especially the blue pants). The jump errors seemed to all have the same problem (went way crooked in the air). His takeoffs must have been awful because the falls weren't "normal" falls. He seemed to refocus quite well after each mistake though. The 4S was beautiful and he got all the non-axel triples. I still felt like the performance and interpretation were there. I still enjoyed the program because I was invested in each moment of what he was doing. I REALLY hope he has a clean FS this season other than COC because I want to show off the program with this costume and not the old one.

awww my dear friends....

to exorcize the bad juju, I went to get a haircut ;) and asked for a nathan chen style ;) my hairdresser thought I was very handsome as a curly dude and kissed me on the cheeks after the cut ;) I almost blushed because well, he is very suave ;)

so... i have given thumbs up to all of you with crying and sad faces... not because i am sad though, but to comfort you

in the past, when Patrick had a performance like that, I would also have used those icons... but today, i feel very different. I am actually SO HAPPY... okay... don't call me crazy... just wait!!!!

Today, for the first time since his comeback, I feel more than ever that Patrick is in the mix. I have not cared at all whether he wins or not... but I have cared for beautiful and clean programs... and of course, when that happens, there's a good chance he will be on top or close to it...

With the successful 4S and not only that but the way he does it, which is so exquisite, he now has the tools to match the other boys technically.... At this point, he is no longer in a chasing mode... he has all the tools he needs... when he solidifies his assets, and starts skating cleaner and cleaner, we will see where it leads him to. I am just so thrilled that this important milestone has been conquered.

Often, at a crossroad, there is danger, there are problems.... Patrick has fought all last year, adding one big element per competition to find himself on the ice today.... a clean SP behind, almost 100 points, he needed his 4S to seal that deal... he got it.... yes... if he had skated like at COC, he would have won the event.... but no.. i wouldn' feel as happy as i do now.... this important step is now behind. Patrick's attitude in the kiss and cry is also showing he understands what he has accomplished now....

What will a Patrick Chan with 2 different quads mean for his competition ? They will soon be the ones thinking about what they need to improve to surpass him.

oh.. and i dare repeating it... both step seq were given 4 in levels.... Patrick is showing tremendous dedication and will to improve... with that attitude he should get where he needs to be in time :)

Patrick is also colour co-ordinated with the on-ice logos (blue) and to the arena (purple). (I'm too lazy to link this a video.) When I actually saw it in competition I liked the overall effect very much.

I just watched the CBC broadcast, and I think Carol Lane said there is talk amongst the team that they are thinking of moving some of the big ticket items to the second half to maximize points. I wonder if they have been changing his jumping layouts in practice.

It would have been nice to see him on the podium today but I'm really pleased by the 4S (how can you NOT be ), a clean sp and a noticeably more relaxed and upbeat Patrick. :)

About the 4S, this was only his third attempt in competition and he landed it, his first two was rotated and not landed. IMO, that's really good. There are several skaters who have been trying quads for years and failing to land or fully rotate. I had to laugh at a couple of comments in the edge - "he needs a jump coach!" :rolleye:  (Did they miss that gorgeous triple axel in his sp?)

He's definitely on "A Journey" and aren't we lucky to be able to witness it?!!! :dance3:

I think the ice was not good, and skating aftter all those quads... I am very sorry for Patrick. But this is not the end of the world. He will do better in the second half of the season.

last year, Patrick mentioned the ice and people got angry.... glad to see that this year, we are all allowed to mention it.

I have no idea what went through his mind. However, a fall on the first quad is not characteristic.... and usually the 3a doesn't go like that... so perhaps it was the ice and messed up with his take offs... but that 4S was textbook...and shot straight to the air... so I don't know... i am sorry the most for Nathan and Shoma TBH... they skated lights out today and it's underwhelming that none of the 3 big boys did a great skate. Can you imagine that event if Javi, Yuzu and Patrick had skated like the kids???

WOW!!!! but it didn't happen.

I agree with you, this is a long road and it's better the top guys peak later on in the season.

Frankly I think after Nathan, the ice became too bad. Many people complained about the ice, took photos and they actually thought it's dangerous. After so many quads, it certainly went very badly.
But I am not worrying much, they simply should not peak right now to be honest. So I am glad they have room to improve for the second half of the season.

well then, if the ice was that bad... it makes patrick's 4S debut even more of an achievement.

skatingfan4ever has noticed as well that the axels were so not like usually... perhaps Patrick was overcompensating.... but in the KnC he mentioned having focused perhaps a bit too much on his 4S...

oh well.. in 40 days ;) i have a date with Patrick at Nationals... cannot wait.

I posted at the competition thread

Patrick is following two well established patterns

1. A successful new quad landed accompanied by program collapse, and

2. When in competition with Hanyu, the later skater always outdoes the first, for better or worse.

i believe, as usual, :), that it's mostly mental. Our minds do determine a lot of what happens. In setting a goal, sometimes other important things get neglected or even 'traded' away. (We all know how people negotiate with God in desperation, making offers and trading promises. :)) Thinking determinedly "I just want this" or 'if only I will have this" is mental negotiation and limitation, sacrificing something for the most desired thing. I think Patrick was too focused on his goal for this competition that he achieved it with negligence on other jumps which all required full attention. He might have taken his other jumps for granted or it might be his experience that there would be some problems with the program when a new quad is landed. As long as that's how it works with him, it is an accepted process and he is on the right track. With any new element, he has had the skills and it is always the experience of good execution in a competition that he needs. Thus he succeeded in doing 2 3As and a 4T with bonus last season and this season is about adding the 4S. Once accomplished, it's his to repeat. As I said before, he's filling his tool chest. And he will pull them all out the next time and then there will be at least once when they all work together.
