Patrick Chan

Granny Chiddy sounds much better than Granny Smith

Don't rush him. He's not an uncle yet. There are three kinds of uncles: the maternal uncle (variations of Jiu) , the father's older brother (variations of Bo), and the father's younger brother (variations of Shu). A man in his thirties and forties are called Shu, and older men are Bo. One addresses one's boyfriend's or girlfriend's father as Bofu and once married, Baba (Papa) just like the spouse. One's real relatives are usually called Bobo, Shushu, and Jiujiu.

This is just a partial introduction into Chinese appelations.

:agree: to your Broken Hallelujah post, skatingfan4ever.

I want to add that Dust In The Wind may seem insignificant, but dust, like diamond, is forever.

“And love is not a victory march. It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah.”

Patrick’s love of skating is certainly not a victory march right now, and in the SC LP, it manifested itself as a broken Hallelujah. Patrick skated brokenly, tiredly, like a skater at the end of his rope whose strength is nearly gone. And yet, there was still such beauty in it, a sense of rawness and deep emotion. The first time I watched the LP, I had the sound muted on my TV because I wanted to see the program with the clarity of TV but, knowing what happened, wanted zero commentary. This is what I learned: THIS PROGRAM HAS SO MANY BEAUTIFUL IMAGES!!! AT ANY MOMENT IN IT, YOU CAN TAKE A SNAPSHOT THAT WOULD SAY SO MUCH!!! The truly amazing part is that the artistic intent of the program comes through so strongly even without music. And then I watched the No Commentary Video online with the sound on, and the music merely added to the beauty that was already inherent in the movement and artistic expression. Patrick’s skating can, in fact, mesmerize me without any music. (I doubt I will be showing this specific performance to any of my non-fan friends though). I felt as though I was watching a JO performance, but unfortunately it was happening at SC. Patrick looked shocked when he got up from the 4T and so then he seemingly rushed all the other jumps. The 3F at the end was beautiful though. Even when it’s broken and difficult to give, a Hallelujah is still a Hallelujah. I am so grateful that Patrick is still competing, so he could give us these two programs, regardless of how the jumps go. Plus, I  both costumes this season so much!!!

I love it and hate it that Patrick is so incredibly open in interviews. It’s nice to know what he’s thinking, but at the same time, he’s so blunt when he’s frustrated that it hurts my heart. All I want to do right now is give him a nice long hug without saying anything!!! (I know this will never happen, as I am a very insignificant fan appreciating him from afar). From Bev Smith’s article, we learned a few things:

- Confirmation that Patrick missed Nebelhorn because he wasn’t comfortable in new boots yet. He “hated” to miss it.

- At the moment, Patrick feels out of place in the current men’s field (which saddens me greatly because he sounded so content and upbeat after 2017 Worlds). “I mean, look at me. I’m trying to find the good in this footwork sequence, when everyone is doing quads. Not much positive I can say at this event, but it’s okay.” (For the record, I did enjoy both step sequences a lot, and the spins were fabulous as well).

- Somewhere in his mind, he knows he should keep fighting. “But sometimes you’ve got to define when to push yourself through the tough times. When you really don’t want to, you have to push yourself or whether it does mean just pulling yourself back.“ (From everything I’ve read so far, I think he will go to NHK, but we’ll know soon enough).

- The crowd still showed him the love after the LP! :luv17: “The heartwarming part, the heartbreaking part, was that when Patrick took his final, wilted bow, the crowd at the Brandt Centre began to stand and cheer. And cheer for Patrick Chan.”

Forgive me for this long and somewhat rambling post. Welcome to all the new and newly returned posters!!! :ghug: The atmosphere here right now is better than after Sochi, and this SC was actually a worse skate and situation. Thanks, everyone, and keep it up!!! :)

as you know... i have read the 737 pages of this thread... mind you, when i joined in, there were maybe only about 400???? so it was much easier...

like jiujiukuan ( I hope this is better than granny chiddy ), his fans have grown. We are reaching new levels of sympathy and love... and ultimately, despite the rocky waves, we will reach the peaceful and endless water we can find on a clear summer night on the Superior Lake....

One summer I sailed the 5 great lakes, continued through the Maritimes until Maine.... and I will always remember those nights, when alone on the deck, I would watch the moon and the stars....we were surrounded with water... going forward slowly....

we often don't realize how big our world is... and how small we are....

and this is what Patrick is coming to terms with this year... with his farewell programs. I think it just hit him for real.... at this first competition... and it froze him... However, I know he will get through this.

It's hard to say farewell.

Long parenthesis
(I expressed concern about these songs if you remember... because they have some deep poetic meaning... they are more philosophical than upbeat... they ask us to reflect on life.... they carry their own emotion... strong emotions... and when Patrick announced his picks, he seemed detached about it... he said he let the others pick.. he said he didn't want to get involved.... he said he didn't want to think too much... and then I said : well... once on the ice.. with the powerful emotional content that he will create with his programs, HE WILL FEEL the emotional charge of his programs... and it's undeniably a titanesque one....back then I was visualising the games.... and I was concerned.... but I should have known better.... Patrick would meet his destiny much earlier... he would meet his own swan song way before the games... this is actually a very positive thing. I think now he knows what these songs mean to him. It's now up to him to live with them, to tame their power, to love what they provoke in him. Once he has mastered the multitude of emotions, sometimes even contradicting ones, he will be ready.... in other words : Patrick has to face HIS MUSIC.... HIS ART... HIS SKATING... It's exactly what I had on my mind a few months back... but I was wrong... it didn't happen at the games... it happened at his last Skate Canada... and I am thrilled that it did. Better now than later.)

I trust Patrick will learn that saying farewell can be beautiful. It can give a sense of closure on a brilliant and long career but also open new doors. Once Patrick is ready, new light will be shed on how he needs to prepare himself for competitions. I don't know if he will get there for NHK.... I don't know if will get there for Nationals.... though, I think Nationals will be where things come full circle, just in time for Patrick to get out there and perform like the genuine artist he can be.

During this process, we, his fans, will have learned to slightly let go as well... we are watching someone who has been skating for us for over a decade... we have lived so many emotions through him.... we have smiled and cried.... but we have been happy.

Let's be grateful for the next months to come... let's remain the supportive and "zen" fan fest we have been, though let's remain open to our necessary emotional outbreaks. Every one of the posts in this thread is like Dust in the wind... a message floating away in the universe... a bit of hope, a bit of love... a bit of melancholy a bit of happiness...

in the stillness of the night... the moon will always guide you.....

Happy Halloween! Just got back from supervising trick or treating, which brought up a good memory of Patrick from two years ago...

It was 10/31/2015, and I had just become a Pchiddy fan two weeks prior, but I had to take family out around the neighborhood. Patrick's short program at SCI2015 had not gone so well, so I was a bit nervous for him knowing he would be heading into his LP. I couldn't watch any livestream on my phone back then, so I had my phone browser pointed right at this forum, where I kept refreshing... and refreshing... the screen until I found out he did a flawless LP and won.

Good memories!

In the meantime, here's a pic of him at Sunday's EX gala practice, staring at his phone, of course. I hope he wasn't reading the news...

Let's encourage him!

Yes, Patrick's 2015 SC free skate made a great impression on me and I believe he will pull another super human miraculous turn around again. He just has to believe in himself and focus.

If this is indeed his last season, he will need to make it a good and happy one, for himself and for his supporters. It will also affect the many doors and opportunities waiting for him next year. I don't mean this as a demand or a pressure but hope he will indeed follow his bliss and not be led astray by negative concerns and distractions.

Go Patrick!!!!!!!!!!!

sometimes, and I try not to do that too often, I am contemplating the idea that it is not his last season ...

and then after this weekend, I had a spin of dark energy and thought... well... if he cannot feel happy all season about his skating... would he stay... a few more months??? would he consider doing another skate canada (in Laval thank you!) or another nationals??? or even another worlds (in Montreal thank you!).... would he consider doing "part-time competing" for instance doing only nationals 4cc and worlds.. no GP... ??? would he ? would he not????

I think the big question for me, as we let our Canada goose sing, will he retire on a high note.... this is my biggest wish...

Don't think so, it's too close to the OG team event start. Unless he decides to make Asia his temporary training base for the month leading up to the games, so he doesn't have to deal with jet lag or fatigue. A lot of top skaters who were named to their OG teams didn't go to 4CC, that's why we saw Kanako compete in 4CC and win it because her event started in the last half of the games, so she had time to recover.

You can always fly from Taiwan (that's where you are?) to Vancouver on direct flights and see him in Canadian nationals this January! I think China Airlines and Eva Air both do direct flights a few times a week. And even if you're not, YVR / Vancouver is a major hub for trans-Pacific flights, so lots of options to fly over for a week and also see all the other Canadians perform.

I see, I should’ve know with the 4CC being so close to the games a lot won’t participate in it.
Oh well, one can dream. Anyways thanks a lot everyone for your input. :yes2:

Going back to Patrick, I just love how he brings us all together emotionally
I’m honestly still lost though as to how I want to express myself with regards to him.
So, yeah no long emotional post from me yet :console:, hopefully soon.

I love ALL of this, but especially what I've bolded. :thank: There is nowhere to go from here but up. Patrick admitted that he's never skated like that before in a big competition, so having already reached the bottom, he can begin rising again. I look forward to watching that rise. As to how high it will go, who knows? ;)

I see, I should’ve know with the 4CC being so close to the games a lot won’t participate in it.

I did mine yesterday, and that felt late to me. I wanted to make sure I said things in an accurate and positive way and that I said everything I wanted to say in a somewhat coherent order. I was also busy with other things, so it was easy to put off. You are welcome to post any thoughts about anything whenever you're ready! The thread will still be here for you! :)

I think the big question for me, as we let our Canada goose sing, will he retire on a high note.... this is my biggest wish...

He just answered your question in today's article - it is his wish:

Canada may have its best Olympic figure skating team ever

"What I want is to be able to skate confidently and to be able to accept myself. That will be the most exhilarating thing for me at the Olympic Games."

Yes! Go Patrick!

That's great... He should hang out with Tessa and Scott too

"We've learned that in order to get to the medals, you need to embrace the process," says Virtue.

Moir adds: "Tessa and I discuss how we're feeling in the process, and we think it's a good sign that we're feeling like we're enjoying it on this journey."

I agree! He needs to socialize with them more.

In the meantime, here are some nice photos from the LP, taken by a fan:

Interestingly, "Zen" should be "Chan" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chan_Buddhism )! :)
