Patrick Chan

Combine these and other factors and it occurred to me the other night that he might be suffering from burnout. This is a serious issue.

To me this is the only logical explanation.

It just seems like he doesn't even WANT to compete/train anymore. Like that fire is gone. He withdraws from Nebelhorn + NHK for reasons that could have been avoided. And even at SC he just seemed... off? Like in practice he wasn't even trying; he was just going through the motions.

Maybe it's good to take time off and not go to NHK to do some soul searching. As a fan of his skating I'm worried. But I also hope that Patrick makes the best decision for him in terms of whether he wants to continue this season.

For Patrick, figure skating has been his entire life ever since he was a small child. He is a prodigy in every sense of the word. His entire life people have been telling him about his potential and how good he is and how he's going to win OG one day... you must get addicted to that. When you're entire identity is wrapped up in this one thing it's scary to step away from that. But if you don't have that passion/drive anymore there really isn't anything that anyone can say or do.

I love watching Patrick skate so much and I wish him all the best in whatever he chooses to do.

I think it's a good decision for Patrick to withdraw from the NHK competition. I hope the decision is based on the need of focusing on training for Patrick but no other issues. :console:

My feeling and emotion are deeply disturbed lately by what is happening around Patrick. :( I'm worry and concern him so much but I can't do anything to help. As we all know that there wasn't much about Patrick's news released by him or SC prior to the SC competition. We were all wondering where was Patrick at that time.

Thank you my friends and the new posters for the contribution of all the well-written posts in this FF; also the tweets from Patrick's fans in Vivley's blog post. They are so touching and I read them all. I agree most of the detailed analysis, happy for the love and support that Patrick received. Some of the comments brought tears to my eyes.

Disappointments and fears are the tough things to handle for somebody. Patrick needs to leave them behind , stays positive, focuses in training to prepare for the Nationals and Olympics in a few months. He is a brilliant, beautiful, talented skater and that is one of the reasons we love him so much. I wish all the very best to Patrick and comes back strong than ever. ;)

"To Patrick with Love" is the name of this avatar. It will stay for now to show the love and support to PChiddy from his fans.

Go Patrick!!!!!!

beautiful post ... thank you.

i am thinking more and more that Patrick just needs to stay away from media and the GP circus... and judges and fans and yes... fan... :)

he was all over the place before SC... got tired.. didn't have his legs..... though as you can see, he is super fit!

So he needs to stay home and avoid the tiring trips and just do his own training... he is passionate about the sport and by training at home, skating, he will improve and find what he needs for the next stretch.

Sometimes one needs to reset... to spend time alone.

I think he knows by now that the guard is changing in figure skating... Javier finished 6th today.... in GP... wow... when was the last time that happened? It's a different sport than the one these guys were doing... so in light of that, i think it's normal that he spends time training. That's actually part of the process....

I think that i am just torn by my desire to see him skate as I love to watch him so much... but when I think about it... I'd prefer to see him skate when he is 100% into it...

and as a performer, I can tell you that I don't like playing when I am not into it... (for whatever reason... stupid piano, not ready, bad music, being ill or tired) so I can understand that he doesn't feel the urge of presenting himself in public if he doesn't feel 100% ready.... he will come back one way or another ...
and i will edit this post later... i really need to shower and go to work lOL

I feel like I'm a strange person. I like watching figure skating competitions because we get to see each skater's skills at a more advanced level than in shows. For example, there's nothing quite like Patrick's competitive StSeqs, Yuzu's spread eagle+3A+spread eagle, Nathan's and Boyang's 4Lzs, Shibs' 4 twizzles in a row, etc. But, as far as the actual results, and debating those results, I hardly care at all. I dislike accusations of "Skater X is underscored/overscored" because to me all it really means is, "I would have scored things differently." Being bitter and endlessly debating results is, in my mind, a waste of time and energy. If I enjoy a certain skater or a certain program, I want to see it as many times as possible, and if I don't, I don't. I watch competitions for the actual programs and not for the results, especially not in terms of "who is going to beat who." Patrick's experiences have certainly reinforced this mindset, but I also personally was never "bitter" about Tara beating Michelle in 1998, and I'm amazed about how some people still love to debate 1994, even though it was almost 24 YEARS AGO!!! I watch competitions more for the level of skating presented and less for the results. Am I the only one?

(Sorry this post is only tangentially about Patrick. It will be harder for me to watch the men's GP without him, that's all. I am very curious whether anyone else thinks the way I do about competitions).

it's the photo you should look at ;)

This photo reminds me of someone else we know and love too. Welcome Patrick to the (almost) Costume Violation Club :laugh2:  But no doubt this was used for an EX or a show.

nothing weird about that ;) i like "being a judge" but ultimately... i trust they know better than i do... or else, I would be accusing the whole world of being corrupted all the time.. .which is not something that interests me...

I will say this: GS, and all other figure skating forums, would have MUCH less activity if most people thought the way we think! ;)

So there we have it. One positive thing is we don't have to keep wondering if he would be able to sneak into the GPF or not. But suddenly I'm not as interested in the entire men's GP now (sorry, I know the other skaters work very hard and have their own amazing qualities, but Patrick's programs are the most interesting for me to watch this season). I also very much like Deniss Vasiljevs, but he's young and doesn't have the quad yet, so no GPF possibility for him yet. It also sounds like Patrick won't be doing a Senior B or anything. :( Better than competing burned out, I suppose, but having so few competitions will present its own challenges for him at Nationals. What about 4CC and Worlds now? (They're probably still too close to the Games, but we can dream!)

Same here! You're not the only one feeling this way!

I'm so heartbroken to know that Patrick has decided to withdraw from NHK:sad21::cry::cry:
In this Sunday morning, so many cries among Japanese fans who believed he would come...

As there are few opportunities to see him skate in competitions, I'll keep in mind every moment he provides on the ice with my feelings of gratitude.

One Japanese fan had just gotten her shipment of a new banner to cheer Patrick on at the NHK in the mail... and she was in tears but apologizing for being "selfish".

I hope she posts a photo of it, but yes, I am grateful for each competition we get to see as well.

Thank you for concurring. In truth I was upset on Friday morning my time (it was already 1:00 p.m. EST) when tweets began to swirl on Twitter that he would not be at NHK. After the quiet withdrawal from Nebelhorn, I figured the least he could do was make an announcement this time, so I sent him and Skate Canada this tweet, pleading with them to do so. I really don't know if their announcement 2.5 hours later was a response or if they had already planned for this to go out. Later I realized that it conveniently went out at 4 p.m. Eastern, when media attention would be light.

Maybe he should have done his usual summer shows and not stayed behind to train the 4F. I found this article that describes several symptoms, of which he definitely has one - the heavy legs of stone.

Let him know you love to watch him skate. He'll appreciate it.

Anyway, right now I'm working on a fun, creative, and very time-consuming project with Patrick as the subject. I'll show it to you all when it's ready. Have a great Sunday!

I think everyone has that time, when they feel not motivated and just couldn’t find the passion. But I believe in Patrick’s love for skating. I think he will soon find the fire and help team Canada get the team gold at the Olympic. He will have more great memories of skating.

It's a bit of a new and kinda sad feeling to me that we won't be seeing Patrick and maybe even Javi for the GPF. Some of my friends even affectionately call Javi and Patrick as the uncles of skating, seeing that both of are currently one of the oldest in the competition. Still I'd just like to imagine Patrick and Javi watching the GPF on TV while enjoying a cold beer together.

i'd be going to that GPF party and would bring lots of homemade comfort food for the boys ;)

My new avatar represents hope. The hope that we will see Patrick smiling again on the ice. Nationals is coming, everyone! :ghug: Let's chant that for the next two months. Say it with me: Nationals is coming, Nationals is coming, Nationals is coming..... :)

I love your new avatar. It represents hope and the red also represents good luck.

Yes, it's nice to see the smiley face of Patrick with his arms open in front of the maple leaf. :luv17:

Great! Who is going to Nationals? The single event tickets are on sale!

Yesterday I went to a student music recital, and what did I hear?

- One performance of "Hallelujah" on the ukulele, and sung by the student
- One performance of "Blackbird" on the guitar
- One performance of "Fur Elise" on the piano that was a tiny bit better than Patrick's version

It was a fun recital - but I was still reminded of Patrick! :)
