Patrick's Accomplishments in the Individual LP

- No falls
- Nice 4T+2T and 3Lz+3T
- His cleanest 3As all season
- Never giving up (beautiful 3F and 2A to end the jumps)
- Beautiful skating that captured my attention and my heart
- Quickly and seamlessly getting back into the flow of the StSeq after the stumble (making it a non-disruptive mistake for me)
- Finishing in the top 10 (about what I expected given how he has skated this season and his lower BV)
- Giving me the joy and privilege of watching him skate another program (what a gift!)
- Getting off the ice happy with himself and the way he skated
- Gaining more belief in himself and confidence in himself

And now I'm crying again as I type. I started crying during his camel spin and watched the rest of the program through tears. The beauty of Patrick's skating was clear even through my tears. There was some sadness, yes, but mostly they were and are tears of gratitude. Some skaters don't have long careers or don't have as many opportunities during their careers. I've gotten to watch Patrick skate for 10 years and see him grow into the skater and the person he is today, and it has been amazing. Thank you, Patrick, for everything!!!!!! :bow: :thank: :love: :cry: :ghug: I would have loved to see a clean LP from Patrick, but I didn't mind the mistakes because I got lost in appreciating the beauty of the moment. It turns out I can cry tears of gratitude for an imperfect skate as well as a perfect one. :yes:

It honestly brings tears to my eyes to think that I won’t get to see him compete again, but I totally understand why it’s time for him to move on (I’m sure he is over competing, he almost seemed relieved last night).
The sport will miss him so much....

I agree with you. Patrick should not do Worlds if he doesn't want to. I was not trying to belittle Nam and Keegan. I was saying Patrick could get a good placement and help Canada, not that he would or should. I suppose the implication in my statement was that Nam and Keegan couldn't/wouldn't, but that's not what was on my mind at all. In a mid-season article, Bev Smith wrote that Patrick said that he "had not discussed" going to Worlds or not with Skate Canada and it sounded then like he was unsure. That's the last specific mention of Worlds we've had so far. My main point was that we don't have confirmation Patrick is withdrawing yet. But he probably will, and more power to him in his next endeavors. If so, Keegan and Nam will skate their hearts out at Worlds and we'll see what happens. No shade intended.

Mission accomplished

Chan, competing in his third and final Games, was happy with a performance that he acknowledged as solid, but not perfect.

"My goals coming into these Games, I've accomplished and today my small little goal was to land both Axels and I did that," Chan told CBC Sports' Paul Martini.

"A lot of guys really laid it down today, so all I could do was focus on my own challenges. I didn't need the additional weight of trying to think about beating these guys. I just took it one thing at a time and I had a great skate. I can step off the ice feeling really happy about myself."

Chan, 27, said his proudest accomplishments include helping Canada to gold in the team event in Pyeongchang as well as his 10 national titles. He also took home silver in both the men's competition and team event at the Sochi Olympics.

Chan also opened up about some challenges he faced in recent years that had him questioning the idea of going to the Olympics at all.

"This past year and the year before were really challenging – going as far as not even wanting to make it to these Games and moving on and going on to other great things," he said after the free skate.

"But I am so thankful for the people I had around me … they've all been there every step of the way, believed in me more than I believed in myself. I learned a lesson and now I step off the ice here feeling like I believe in myself and have confidence in myself."

All these quotes from Patrick are golden and make me so happy!!! :yay: I'm so happy that he got off the ice happy. I added these things to the list of accomplishments in my other post. Congrats, Patrick, on what you have learned through this whole experience. Now I will safely predict that Patrick is not going to Worlds. :laugh: But who knows, he could surprise us yet again.
 
I'm late to comment, but I have to admit I bawled like crazy during the fs. Such gorgeous skating, beyond words. Competitive skating will have a big hole to fill next season.

Deniss Vasiljevs is my pick for that! :love: He and Stephane Lambiel are a dream coach-student pair. Here is Deniss's SP from Europeans this year. No one can replace Patrick, but that's not the point. No one is ever "replaced" on my list of favorites, but the list can always be added to.
 
I just watched his skate and despite the errors in his jumps, I really enjoyed his skating, so smooth and beautiful. If he retires after this, I will always remember him for his beautiful SS. :clap:

No offense taken. It's just that a lot of people are really into that "getting more spots" thing, and it can be overdone. If Patricks goes to Worlds, they may have a slightly better chance of getting 2 spots next year. But if he doesn't, then Nam has a guaranteed spot this year. I'd take the guaranteed spot this year and say thank you.

This is all under my assumption that Patrick doesn't want to go. At this point, he should do exactly what he want to do for himself, and not feel any obligation to anyone else.

Since yesterday, I’ve been sad and so emotional to see him end his competitive career.
For more than 10 years I’ve been following his career. Now I miss him already.
Yes, all the top skaters can hit multiple kinds of quad jumps, but not any one can skate like him, such effortlessly and gracefully floating on the ice. While his performance, music always seems like flowing from inside his body to my eyes.

I really thank him for his returning to the competitions after Sochi, showing us mesmerizing performances such as LP in Taipei.
To see him get a gold medal at last with his teammates made me happier than anything.
My fellow Patrick fans, I saw so many twitters congratulating his gold medal at the team event. Even general figure skating fans in Japan seemed happy for his well-deserved medal.

His retirement is the end of an era and I’ll miss him forever.
He’ll undoubtedly become an excellent coach, so perhaps someday we’ll see some talented young boy skate more amazingly than Patrick!

I couldn't agree with you more.
After the FS, I needed some time to sort out my feelings and now want to say, "Thank you for everything, Patrick!!!"

Sometimes it was very tough for me to see his difficult times and imagine how he was feeling about it. Now I am very proud of Patrick, his amazing fans and myself as a Patrick fan.

He'll be remembered forever in this sport and I already miss him so much:cry:

My best wishes for his new career! He has every reason to be happy in the next stage of his life.

Does anyone know if he will be skating in the Gala? I would assume that he would be asked and if so, would agree to it (if not for himself, for his fans). It’s the end of an era and I would love to see him skate one more time on Olympic ice.
I just rewatched Journey from last years worlds, I’m such an sucker for that music, it makes me cry. I wish he could do an abbreviated version (or not so technical jump wise) for this type of Gala, would be so emotional [emoji24].
I’m sure people would love to see him just skate around and do footwork for 3 or 4 minutes lol. I know I’d be totally down with that.
