We watched Oprah earlier today and wow!!
Hearing his wife Lee talk about how because they have learned so much about brain injuries in Iraq that the surgeons there taking off so much of his skull to let the brain swell and expand w/out that compression happening, and that in turn, probally saved Bob's life....All I could think of was my one cousin who lay in the hospital for four days after his aneyresum was discovered, w/the pressure building and only after four days passed by did they finally go in and take off half of his skull...
The mental image of my cousin in his wheelchair and knowing he'll never be able to come all the way back because of the bumbling that happened...That one statement of Lee's just resonated so deeply w/not just me, but my parents as well. Along w/her saying that in Iraq there were no worrying about lawsuits or malpractice, they just went ahead and did what needed to be done. You really do wonder, don't you?
She also said on Oprah that after the President of ABC News called to let her know what had happened, she left the hotel room (her and their four kids were in Disney World) to take a walk around the pool, to figure out what to tell their kids. She comes back in and the two oldest are watching the news reports about what happened to their Dad on the TV.
I can't imagine what that moment must have been like for her.
You know...After watching Oprah today and then Bob's special tonight...He's got one incredably strong lady there beside him. The book is called In An Instant and I plan on adding it to our library the next time I'm in a bookstore.
Bob and Lee will also be interviewed by Diane Sawyer on GMA tomorrow morning and Bob is returning to the anchor chair of ABC News World News Tonight tomorrow night.
