You Know You're a Figure Skating Fan When...

When friends start emailing and texting me all sorts of questions during the Oly performances and you want to tell them "No! Not now! Too busy watching."

(Best reward -- One of them admits "I can see how you get hooked on this!")
My ignored friends just get a message later: "Sorry I didn't answer/pick up the phone. I was completely absorbed watching the Olympics." :coffee::popcorn:

(Admittedly I often don't answer the phone or an email message right away if I don't feel like it. And my home phone is a landline that doesn't do texts. People can leave phone messages and I call back when I get around to it.)

Someone has probably already written something like this, but lately when I see a girl or woman of short stature, I think: She would be perfect for pairs...
In this context, I think I have found the right thread to confess this wild desire...

...You secretly wish Saki Miyake to do pairs with Sena Miyake and perform triple axels as side-by-side jumps

...when you hunt down all of the Samsung flip phone #victoryselfies taken by all of the figure skating medal winners on the 2026 Olympics podiums posted on Instagram
Share them! Start a thread and share them!:love4:

Good idea! These were all questions about the skating. I guess I was hoping to create a few new fans. Many knew I was "off the grid" during the skating. I got to them all eventually.

I can't figure out how to do a collage but one can just search the hashtag victory selfie in Instagram and find the podium selfies.

...you are sleep deprived but you keep watching that live stream because you need to know if Hannah Frank qualifies for the free (and as soon as you think "I should skip the last warmup groups because these skaters wont score as low as 53" Mei Okada proves you wrong). Hannah doesn't; you are devastated because you just wasted eight hours of your life but then you realize that this is Hannah's best placement in JWC anyway and you fall asleep on the sofa with overwhelming sense of happiness.

When you watched the late Johnny Johns and the late Melissa Militano complete the first triple twist back in 1975. Still a challenging element today. Listen to how excited Dick Button is about the first triple twist lift leading into throw double axel and triple toe loop The latter two elements were flawed but I know they did accomplish the unusual sequence.

Anyone know why did they did not go to 1976 Olympics?

Melissa Militano had competed in the 1972 Olympics with her brother Mark.

I knew the multi-talented Johnny Johns died very recently, but hadn't known until I looked Melissa up in Wikipedia that she also died some years ago, of cancer. Sad. Seeing her on TV when I was a little kid was one of the reasons I agreed eagerly when asked later if I'd like to try pairs. She always looked so pretty on the ice, and they were trying some cool new things even if not always successfully.

I loved watching them try new and unusual moves as well. It just seems sad that they did not get to be Olympians as their adventurous choices had Olympian written all over them. Mark Militano, her brother, composed Nancy Kerrigan’s short program music Desperate Love.

Sorry folks - I am deep down the rabbit hole today I am restoring videos lost in a backup drive crash and am working on this era today.

Melissa Militano & Johnny Johns - 1974 US Nationals
Short Program - why does no one do pair tango camels anymore?

Long Program - ooh pull butterflies with Melissa doing the last one into a back camel spin

Pair teams if you are looking for new ideas - everything old can be new again.

And if you happen to actually be an old pair team that just won't quit (why? still having too much fun!), how to feel even older: Do a move that was standard in your competitive years, and have a younger skater say "Wow, that's wild! Did you just invent that yourself?" 🧓👵🦽
