2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

I already posted my opinions of the top 5 ladies' programs in the Glacier Falls thread, but I wanted to put it somewhere that would get more traffic in the long run, so people can better know what to expect. So here are my standouts.

Gracie:

A) She not only won, but had by far her best early-season outing ever (as a senior). That says a lot.

B) Her 2A is night-and-day better than last year!

C) As for the programs: #RIPPrincess, indeed! Firebird may well be the best FS she's ever had (although I actually loved her Life is Beautiful program...don't judge :slink:), and while her tango SP wasn't my favorite of the competition, it has potential to be a very good vehicle for her. Also, #FirebirdHands is now the official hashtag of Gracie. No questions asked. :)

Polina

A) can we just talk about those arms because yes. Just. Yes. It's like watching a ballerina. If Gracie's hashtag is #FirebirdHands, hers is #GoodbyeLimbFlailing. Because that's exactly what she's done. Bravo, Polina.

B) I love Moonlight Sonata, so it's really no surprise that hers was my tied-for-fave SP of the competition.

C) Yes, she totally fell apart in the FS, and yes, she did exactly the opposite of 4CC (1st in SP-4th overall instead of 4th in SP-1st overall), but I love her dress. No matter what everyone else on here says.

Mariah

A) YAAAAY for 3F-3T! :cheer2:

B) That FS is just. So. Yes. Everything I love about Mariah in a program. From the beautiful positions and extension to the 3-3, there was nothing about this program (besides the two falls) that I didn't love. Tied for my favorite FS (with Gracie's) of this competition.

Courtney

A) Her SP didn't really stand out, but...it was okay.

B) 3A IN THE HOUSE! Yeah baby! It is so, so great to see her trying it!

C) I think her FS really suits her. The music is really powerful, and that's what she does best. Even with the weird turnout on her 3F-3T.

And...I have to leave my house now. So I must stop.

Compare to her previous programs, this is a big improvement. I am more skeptical about her SP (and that dress!!) but well at least she doesn't play princess anymore.

It's a slight improvement but still a warhorse. She would do much better with some fresh music which would allow her to create her own style. Some of the guys are venturing out of the warhorse box and it's so refreshing. I wish the girls would do the same.

What is fresh? Why should Gracie go for fresh music when she is not very established in the judges eyes, and rarely put herself together in competition? Gracie is no WC to go for fresh music and get good credit from it whether judges like it or not. She chooses something suits her athletic style and not too weird with the judges. her first priority is landing all of her jumps.

I think Gracie's Firebird program definitely is a step in the right direction - it utilises her strengths far more than the program she had last year, for example. Power, speed. When this has the chance to settle, I think this might be a really good fit for her. (And I'm saying that as someone who isn't particularly fond of Firebird - but the important thing is that the program suits her, not me.;))

I wish the SP music she'd chosen was a little... faster. But I'm not making my mind up on that one quite yet. Let's see how it develops - and when I can hear it with a little better sound.

Honestly, I find both performances SP and LP a bit stiff not really convincing yet. The firebird needs effortless speed, snap to their movement, an awareness she doesn't quite have yet. The tango barely has any texture to it. But say what it's early days yet.

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking - and what I meant by the program "settling". I think that as yet she is more going through the motions, as she has to still "remember" the choreography - when she's done it often enough and had it for a longer period of time, it won't be as... rehearsed, so to speak. Then we will really be able to judge whether she "clicks" with it or not. But anyway, I think these programs have a better shot of bringing out the best in Gracie, than last year's programs.

Hopefully, competition will be stellar this season. Everyone looks to be pulling up!!

I agree. There is nothing here to make her stand out against the likes of Mao and Liza. Yes, it's early and I'm sure she'll improve the quality of her skating, but there's not much you can do with two blah programs. So far I think the SP has more promise than the LP.

All I can really say about Gracie is that those two programs are definitely #RIPPrincess programs.

Unfortunately.

I disagree. I think she needs to go for a program that is more original (I'm not sure what you mean by weird. I don't think anyone would advocate for weird) and not a remake of someone's stale program. She's not going to get on the podium unless she stands out and so far her skating alone isn't enough. She needs to take a risk and put out a program that will get some attention from judges and fans and work to perfect the elements within that program.

I see that FB program as that vehicle for her. It's a different take on FB and doesn't just use the common pieces of FB in it, but one of the less well known movements at the beginning. Also, if the bird-like motions are carried throughout the program and stand out more as she gets comfortable with this program, it could be really eye catching! I think Polina needs to rethink the musical cut/arrangement and choreo of her long program more so than Gracie. Mariah's program is just, well, it's going to be awesome as she's a skater that is always committed to her choreo.

Gracie can land on podium as long as she does well or relatively well (even when she doesn't do well judges still love her). The point is she needs to do well even with the worst program ever. It means nothing to have a great program that no one ever does if she fails her huge jumps.

Yes, of course. She's capable of doing all the jumps but unfortunately she's not always mentally strong. I hope she's better able to handle the pressure this season.

Well since no one has said it, I might as well say it:

According to Alaine Chartrand's Instagram (@alainechartrand), her programs are:

SP: Pina. Choreo: Shae-Lynn Bourne
FP: Gone with the Wind. Choreo: David Wilson

Ah, so GWTW match up at Rostelecom. ;)

Battle of the Scarletts!!!

(Not that Alaine is for sure playing Scarlett, but it's fun to speculate).

Interesting that our two GWTW programs are from Alaine and Polina, both of whom I consider to be softer skaters without the Scarlett diva attitude on ice. If I had to pick a current lady who I would cast as Scarlett, it'd be Liza T.

Looking at Polina's short on the Icenetwork video, she looks pretty good. Excellent program in the making, just needs more milage. It has the makings of a masterpiece, exceptionally good choreography. It will not be so easy for our Russian ladies this year. Competition is gonna be HOOOTTTTTTT!!!This is what a program should be built on not a triple axel ;)

And what exactly is it in Liz's programs that made her stick out? Nothing to be honest it was her jumps and consistency that won her all those competitions last year.
