2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

On the one hand, I'm glad Nam & his team got away from the stripes and juniorish packaging, but it's like they went just a little too far in the other direction. Maybe this won't be his final costume, though. I just think translucent white doesn't look very good in the rink...but it's not the worst thing I've ever seen.

But seems that Nam's FS costume was not an interim one -- because in two separate tweets yesterday, Nam referred to his costumes (plural) as he thanked/complimented the man who designed them. One of the tweets of praise from Nam included photos of both his SP and FS costumes.

(The designer is Thien Le, whose website seems[?] to indicate that his "day job" is creating high fashion for women. Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

ETA, just sayin' that the FS costume apparently was not intended to be an interim costume. Obviously can't rule out the possibility that Team Nam will re-think the FS costume (esp. if they get wind of the type of feedback in this thread) and change it.​

I assume the jump layout will change for competition (there's no combo right now, though that could easily be tacked onto the first jump, but if he wants to attempt the quad lutz there will need to be more tweaking done). I agree that the costume works because it's very Freddie-esque, and I also agree that it seems labored and slow at this point. But I'm totally in love with every moment of the footwork. Every movement of his body in the footwork just works very well. He's got a better layback than some ladies, and I hope we don't see it disappear in order to make the spin more COP-friendly.

:agree: I think the body movement fits beautifully. There was a bit where it was a little empty where I assume the combo will go. I look forward to seeing this develop.

Love the costume too!

Nam's sixteen, for pity's sake, there was nothing to get away with.

That said, the shirt seems too boring for Nam, the kid seems to have too bold personality for this subdued conservative style that so many North Americans enjoy and the music certainly allows for something stronger.

Latest update is that he's 17 already. If you count his age the way our East Asians count, he's 18. ;)

:rolleye: He was 16 last season and I believe he's Canadian.As if this one year really mattered when the criticism of "juniorish" is concerned. From old and current comments, when Nam skates "young" he lacks maturity, when he tries "older" the theme/music is too big for him.
I don't get why people seem so hell-bent on "maturity" and god forbid that a 16 (or 17) year olds skates without the sophistication of a 24 year old or choose costumes that suit their age.
 
I wonder what Nam think of these 'Shirt-gate' program/costume review... may be he has been hanging around Hanyu and the TCC a bit too long. Adam also has transparency costume issue this year! So Javier... it is your turn :) :)

I comment on the correction of his age. In Western calendar he is 17 already 3 months ago.

As Nam still has East Asian Root so I am sure his parents and grandparents still count his age in Lunar Calendar. Here we count the time you're in your mother belly too, so it's 18. My mum often say: "You're 30 already!!" while in fact I haven't reached that age.

Just our way of counting the age. I mention nothing about maturity of skating. ;)

Nam is a Spicy kid so I want his clothing and costumes to match. Bright colors, bright programs. --But if he's beefing up his program tech in an extreme way, like adding another quad etc, he may be forced by stamina to be less spicy for a little while.

I didn't have a problem with the way he skated (or skates now) at his age. I just don't like cutesy costumes with stripes and whatnot, or some of the corny choreo he was given, regardless of the age of the skater. Big deal. I don't like all of Javi's costumes or programs, either. I like Nam and I certainly wasn't criticizing him personally...not sure what you are so bent out of shape about.
 
Even for the traditional way, Nam is 17. The age changes on Tết Nguyên Đán (Lunar New Year). My family doesn't use the old way not unless it involving with holoscope or any superstitious. Nowaday, most people just go with western way.

Anyway, is it really matter?

Welcome!

I am Vietnamese-American and my family always used the Western system. My first exposure to the other way of age calculations was when I went to South Korea a few years ago.

I have to root for Nam cause he's part of the Vietnamese diaspora. :) I do find it interesting he's skating to the Killing Fields, wonder if it has significance for his family.
