2017 Worlds Free Dance

Funny: last year it was decided to give level4 to all couples, SD and FD, and P/C, never good at SD, and not really so strong technically, got 2 points and something more than the Shibs for an SD which had placed them second in Euros SD, behind C/L.
This year, come back V/M, slain the concurrence, both at the NHK and at the GPF, and it is decided to give levels where levels are, plus , to be very strict with assigning them. And judges can mix it up, and set the stage for the Olympics where they will put a Russian couple, the same couple 4 years ago was unable to medal, on the podium. Frecnh for first, Tessa aNd Scott for second (unless they skate the programme of their life at 30 years of age).
And of course the Shibs, brilliant for 2 years in a row, get lowballed and, as for Europeans couples,a Cappellini/Lanotte too, guilty for having beated twice the Russians and, this year, the French in the SD at Euros.
Oh, Didier ! Why are you still in this sport ?

I thought she was quite vocal and didn't sugar coat it, which I find refreshing. Apart from being disappointed C&L didn't get the PCS (she thought) they deserved, she wasn't too keen that the last group all skated to the same program (well, except C&B). She reminded the viewers that when a team skates to slow music, executing most elements is easier as opposed to her team who were blazingly fast. After H&D's mishap she said that they didn't belong to the last group and that the only team who can pull off P&C's style are P&C. The other teams should skate with more personality (which I agree with). She conveniently forgot that her own skaters have been skating to the same "happy go alucky" program for years, with comparable music and the same rotational lift in splits, but well... :rolleye:

Yeah, but what she meant, was that all couples use the same style of music and choreo, the mushy-mushy Montreal. Anna
and Luca do the same, true, it's their style, good or bad, but no other does it. C/B risked, they failed, but they were
different. And last year Anna and Luca were criticised and lost levels , because they were slow, now they're fast and the treatment by judges and technical panel is the same.

:handw: Yeah because a team like D/W would never figure out how to adjust to the annual modifications in ice dance rules. (Tongue planted firmly in cheek) I wish we had more teams like D/W. Ice dance has been stagnant since the Montreal Mush started getting huge scores.

I was just thinking today, while watching the Free Dance on NBCSN how much I miss D/W. They always tried something different and never the mushy/angsty stuff (the clawing at the face angsty).

Just read an interesting comment by Bestemianova afte the SD, before the FD: she thinks that, if both Russian couples get the scores they deserve to get, especially S/B, they will get a third spot for the Olympics.
Someone didn't do the maths accordingly, and Bestemianova's dream was not fulfilled.

Oh, I agree with her don't get me wrong. And I do think Anna & Luca have really found the style that suits them (and they DO skate fast and polished), it's just that I'm more into the wierd/overly drammatic/someone-dies kind of programs of the Russian school of yore (the era of the divas who wanted to kill each other on and off the ice). That's why I find most C&L's programs forgettable, which is not necessarily a bad thing; it's always better than to remember a program for the wrong reasons.

Having watched a bit of CBC's coverage they said that Tessa said "Aren't you being dramatic?" to Scott right after he got back into the dance after the stumble. These two are precious.

Watching the press conference was so funny because there was Cizeron being all arty and french in the best possible ways and Maia and Alex being Maia and Alex (careful, well spoken, very cautious) and Tessa answering thoughtfully and Scott joking around and very much being in charge of it all.

I have a question about choreography to the pas de deux from the Nutcracker. It seemed like the couples who tried it wasted some of the music. Do ice dance teams ever try the famous ballet jump lift that end with the lady lowered face down?

I agree with everyone who thought that Cappellini and Lanotte should have scored higher. They were my favorite. I also liked Gilles and Poirier.

I saw the CBC coverage and it made me laugh so hard when they said that! It makes me wonder what skaters say to each other during performances...it'd be interesting to put a microphone on and hear what they have to say... especially Scott

I think it's very obvious V/M and P/C are the two best ice dancers out there... 3rd-9th places are all equal and they will battle for bronze at Olympics... And regarding the comments about B/S, don't tell me that nobody read that article our dear moderators posted a while ago about the professional dancer commenting on FD from grand prix final this year :scratch2:

Do you two have dandruff? All the head scratching. I did not see this article. Does anyone have a link?

Do we really want to know what Barbara F-P said? Or what Stobova said? Or what James and Cipres said to each other that one time?
Yes we probably do want to know but it's probably better we don't. Besides if there is swearing the broadcasters have to pay a fine.

I remember the article but think it may have been a link within a thread. Tony Dovolani gave a dancers perspective on the top group.

I am P/C fan trash :drama:

I just love them so much. Watching them skate makes me weak in the knees, makes me feel things no one else in any discipline makes me feel. (Sui/Han might be the closest?) Kudos to V/M for their dominant, amazing shot dance, and on their free dance that I've enjoyed as well. But they don't make me feel things like P/C! Just get better at the SDs!

Team P/C!!!!

go watch dance live.... it's really the discipline i find gains the most from being live... maybe you will get vm then... their fd is so emotional live (saw it twice) and whenever i've seen it in streaming... i felt way less...
