2017 Worlds Free Dance

montreal is just like that :) makes everyone gorgeous :)

LOL! I'm going back and rereading the thread now I don't have to watch, read, post, drink coffee and bark like a trained seal. And that is so true! I was in Montreal with a friend and it was Head Turner City.

Note to self: save up for return trip to Montreal. One can never have too much eye candy. And it's sugar free!

Can I petition for Tessa and Scott to go to WTT and give me the free dance that I deserve to watch as a fan who has supported them this entire season? I'm kidding, kind of... ;)

Upon reflection, they deserve so many props for pulling it back together so quickly and managing to recapture the moment, especially when so many other teams under the same circumstances would've fallen apart. I think it really is a testament to their 20 year partnership.

They actually do pretty consistently hit their levels to at least level 3, so what I would try if I were them is to develop a style of their own. Take some risks, don't just stay stuck in the Montreal lovey dovey mode. Quite honestly, so many couples do that now, and do it BETTER than F/B, that to break through I really think they need to get away from that and try something else.

Unfortunately, since they train in Montreal where only one kind of program is ever created, I think this is unlikely.

Bingo. When I started commenting here, Ziggy (RIP kiddo!) was the one who convinced me to start doing things like watching Juniors and really pay attention to the early flights of ID. "They have nothing to lose, so some of the most interesting programs will be found there. Once they start winning, they have more to lose so they play it safe." Wise words.

Yes, I think this is very good advice to F/B: find your own style. Style counts for so much in ID, probably more than any other discipline.

Robin Cousins says some people might think C/L are old fashioned but he likes them because it is recognizable as a dance

LOL, it's like Impressionist painting in terms of Modern Art. It's all very pretty and easy to understand and all on the surface. There's no subtext to it. Look! Pretty flowers! Pretty ballet dancers! Pretty! Pretty! Pretty! Same with C/L. They always skate character pieces; the storylines are simple and clear; it's all spoon-fed to the audience. And C/L are masterful at it. That would be fine if they had greater range, but after the disaster with Marina they won't even try to go one iota out of their--and the audience's (though not the judges!)--comfort zone.

Italian commentator interviewd Paola Mezzadri, C/L's coach, and she was pissed!
Said that was their best performance of the season and yet the judges scored it very badly.
Then she mutterd something about a group with similar programs and no personality but nothing was added or explained.

That's rich considering C/L have been doing the same program essentially for years.

Pot to kettle: you're black.

I think it's very obvious V/M and P/C are the two best ice dancers out there... 3rd-9th places are all equal and they will battle for bronze at Olympics...

Both P/C and V/M have had meteoric rises during their 2nd senior year and we never know, one couple could come and change everything ;)
But it does look that way TBH. 11 point between 2nd and 3rd place is not something that I was expecting...

So, I rewatched the event with better quality. I am not expert on levels for sure BUT even if the Shibs looked restrained, I think their levels in the step sequences (in the free at least) were held down a bit by the judges...
On the other hand on V/M FD, in the middle of the diagonal, scott wasn't perfect at all and they had level4  It was better at other competitions where they received a lvl 3...

Also for B/S they looked better at euros but scored better here. (in comparaison to the field) the difference is noticeable.
(needs an ice dance technical expert here, thanks)

And once again, C/L perform way better than at euros and get low scores :palmf:

and more importantly : The GP assignement ! How does it works ? top 3 get to choose right ? Can someone tell me please ? Thank you

Sad for H/D. Really standing out. Energetic. With visible joy in performing.

V/M - liked the first part; then the singing started (felt the same for too long and was quite obnoxious) and the program went nowhere somehow for me. Perfect the construction of the program for P/C THIS time though.

yesterday's fd event made me realize, though, how much i miss davis/white... painful void.

I'm old school too and I love C/L exactly because of this. Same goes for Gilles and Poirier. Bring compulsory dance figures back for the Olympics

Monet is my favourite artist. Turner is my second favourite. This is explains maybe why I don't get or like the Shib's FD.
I do however really enjoy medieval frescoes and am endlessly fascinated by Goya (if slightly disturbed by it). The Dance of Life by Munch is also a painting I'd love to see someone in ID take on. I took an art history course and was the only non visual arts student in the class (I took it as part of my medieval studies degree). My dear fellow classmates tried to get me to like modern art (I think they saw me as some kind of pet project since I was an outsider) but it never quite worked. Sometimes, every once and a while, I see a modern art piece that I like and understand but for the most part it wooshes over my head like a 747. I'm also this way about dance (8 years of ballet, 6 of Jazz, 3 of scottish and 2 of Ukrainian) has left me with nearly no appreciation for modern dance. I can watch it. I can admire it's athleticism and esthetic but it doesn't move me very often. On the other hand Ballroom (which I have never done) often really does excite me. And I'm a sucker for classical ballet. I saw my first ballet (Giselle) when I was 7. Karen Kain and Rex Harrison danced the leads.

Compulsory Dances!
After the 10th skater it becomes a little like watching paint dry.

I think that some of the best moments, program-wise, came early on , during the first two groups, where the couples aren't stressed for placing, but unfortunately also lack the ability to do these programs justice yet. And as we went on and on, it was a bit monotonous, in my book one of the worst seasons as far as choreography is concerned.
Even S/B tried to pull of a Piazolla in Montreal style, mixed with old Soviet style which was just not working.
But what strikes me is the difference of level between the couples. There is V/M and P/C, then five pairs that exchange places for ages, and then a couple of pairs that are being helped by their respective flags, and then a huge gap again. And personally for me, a lack of charisma for most of the second tier teams.
P/C were great in the FD, it finally worked for them, the changes were good. V/M were equally great, apart from that moment. I'm glad at how they both placed deservedly. But it's one style, V/M are capable of more, we know that, and we saw that in the SD, and I think P/C are capable of more too.
Then it was the Shibs, like they always are, and B/S who were as good as they can be, this is the best they can do. I disagree with C/L being put behind, although I really don't like C/L. But they were faster than usual, faster than B/S at this point. But of course their federation wasn't fighting for that third spot. It's understandable
H/D were good, but most people knew it would happen, they are gorgeous skaters, they bring that joy on the ice, but skating last, being mistake prone isn't the best that can happen to anyone.
My question is what happened to C/B. They skated the SD like they were robots, there wasn't that joy in their performance and that attack they even had at Nationals. And then the FD happened, and they looked shaky from the start. This is what T/T made me think too, compared to Euros. Technically solid, but lack of attack and performance wise a bit blunt. I wonder if the Novi plan was to only get those levels and whatever happens
But ice dancing needs to change, I don't know, bring the compulsories back and free us from that horrible hybrid they call Short Dance. They all look as if they are robotic dancers trying to count the steps.

And have Scott get caught on camera saying how much he hates the event? W/P or G/P would be thrilled to do it. I'd rather have them do it than face the possibility of Scott being a grumpy bear again.

Did it really happen ? Do you have a link please ?

About the situation with B/S, I have to say I was honestly surprised they received so much backlash after their performance. I was watching the Russian coverage and the commentators didn't talk at all during the performance, and didn't overpraise B/S afterwards, so I got a chance to make my own opinion and, barring some small mistakes, I thought they were great overall.

However, after watching the British Eurosport (and I have to laugh that the entire season one of the commentators has been thinking that the exit from the twizzles is a mistake (it's part of their choreography)), you'd really think there was some conspiracy happening. Maybe there is, I don't know :confused2: Scores always confuse me, so I can only talk about them in comparison to the scores of the others, but I thought B/S were on the same level as the teams that received similar scores. I quite like this dance for them and I do not dislike the dances of the other teams, everyone made some mistakes, and they were all around the same level. I do not see how they were that much worse (and I watched commenting in some other languages as well, they seemed to more or less like their performance).

Bottom line, I don't see how B/S were that much worse than other teams with similar points (whether or not you like their dance is a different issue; and hey, maybe there is some conspiracy going on), and I continue to be fascinated by how much my opinion (and the others') is influenced by the commentators

Compulsory Dances!
After the 10th skater it becomes a little like watching paint dry.

I just was remembering the old days when they actually had the ice dancers skate the designated dance pattern around the rink...I found that was more fascinating watching than watching poor Brian Orser skate his compulsories in the '80s..... At least for ice dance they played music..... Maybe I was fascinated because it was how I was introduced to watching ice dancing and understanding it....

Heartbroken for Hubble/Donohue. I hope they come out of this stronger than before and give us more magical programs next year. The Eurosport commentators said they were docked for other elements as well. Were those justified? I didn't get to see the protocols yet.

But Wow what a powerful statement from Papadakis/Cizeron! This is the most enthralled I've ever felt watching this program. A daring artistic piece given life by the most gorgeous skating. And the best thing is the judges are rewarding them justly. It's good that V/M did not coast to a FD victory relying on reputation judging. I hope P/C work hard and smartly on their SD in the off season and come back strong from the get-go for the Olympics.

ETA best costumes: Weaver Poje, with Weaver's dress the best of the entire field.
Honorable mentions: Stepanova/Bukin, simple, contemporary with enough contrast to be striking. Especially love the open shirt look for him.
Hubbel/Donohue, love that color tone as a whole and the single cut top on him. Muted elegance.

Not a fan of P/C's "washed denim" look and although Guillaume you have a great body, I still don't think going sleeveless for male ice dancers is a good look.
And Poirier's mustache....Just no.

Re your comment on Weaver's FD costume - did she do any research at all on the music the team used for the FD? This piece by Rodrigo is about his anguish over losing his baby, it is a very sad story and she comes out wearing a red and gold costume???? Not what I would wear if I were in mourning.
