SUCH FUN!!! Some people used to say Patrick had a stiff upper body when he skated. None of that here. Patrick was loose and gesturing to the audience and having a great time. Fancams are never as good as non-fancams, so I look forward to seeing an official video. I love the immediate hop out of the 2A and then how he turns on his knees. What a fantastic Ex!!! :luv17:

last night, a friend came over. Like me, a musician, but unlike me, he doesn't watch skating ever.... i remembered that last year, i had shown him pchiddy's chopin and he was amazed at the beauty of the skater and his skating

So i thought... let's see if he is in the mood for some patrick again.

I put on (i have recorded them on my PVR) Patrick's short from worlds : his comments : nice body... nice costume, i love the suspenders.. so many details matching the music... oh and my favourite comment about the 4t-3t : omg... what was that... that was a rocket launching or what?

then, i put on Patrick's Nationals SP ... they showed Eric Radford on tv.. and friend was like : who is that hottie... ? and i said oh.. world champion pair skater from Canada and you would be pleased to know that he trains here and that he is openly gay... friend was happy... then i said.. oh and they showed him because he wrote the music...
friend looked at me curiously... and i said... "make your own mind"

Music started ... friend said "elevator music" I was like i know.. but it's still nice so let's just watch the skating...

Friend LOVED the 3A and the again "so many details matching the music" at the end of the program, he said, you know, he makes me enjoy this music because he skates on it so well... what a great interpreter ....

And then he said : oh and look at his body, wow....

so then i said : back off... he is mine and we laughed

so i thought I would share the perspectives of another classical musician here who doesnt follow skating though : he focused on patrick's lines, musical matching details, flow on the ice, he liked the step sequences the most, he thought he interpreted his music flawlessly and that he is a true performer... he noticed patrick was in the zone at sp worlds as i had described in my post about the SP... (the look on his face)... he also said that Patrick has a radiant smile and it is nice to see an athlete smile ( i showed him a few other skaters and BY far, Patrick was his favourite)...

So there one more fan for Patrick

He does have a lot of wonderful qualities. I still remember his beautiful Chopin program from 4CC last year. That was Rembrandt on Ice and was seamless from beginning to end. Yes, I am very partial to Chopin, but that was a masterpiece. I probably will not be adding him to my harem :scratch3:, but I do appreciate his skating. I can picture the 4t-3t with tremendous ice coverage that looks like it is shot out of a cannon!

pleasure always... i thought it was fun to hear it from someone who knows nothing about skating yet is also able to notice these things as he is trained as a performing artist as well refinement is what makes a big difference for us musicians... many can play but few can get that level of perfect refined control of the musical line and sound... and i guess it relates to Patrick's edge work...I was always a figure skating fan and connected naturally to the quality aspect of skating, but hearing my friend connect to Patrick's skating for those reasons just made my day

at nationals the cannonball was his 3a in the lp... i was like OMG... it was HUGE!

a lot of skaters do Chopin. As an interpreter of his music, what made me love Patrick's was the flow.... Chopin is all about flow in the fast parts.. the fingers just run n the keys like Patrick's feet on the ice.. it was so cool to see it... and of course the other feature of Chopin's music is the lyricism and that was spot on by Patrick last year, starting with how the prelude in e minor comes in while he is spinning and he changes position there... and then the arm motions... omg... and of course the jumps timed on the opening chords of the scherzo... genius really.

BTW, I was looking at this "cozy" photo of Patrick at lunch with the SOI cast again, and nosy me, I noticed that Dylan had been texting someone right before the picture was taken. Maybe that's why Patrick had a notification on his lock screen.... (Did you all see his iPhone? He has a beautiful image on his lock screen there.)

Also, it looks like next to his phone was the restaurant bill with someone's glasses on top - I wonder if those were Kurt's? Did he pay for lunch? And since he's missing from the photo, was he the photographer?

Anyway, it's fun for me to look at these little details...

I was always a figure skating fan and connected naturally to the quality aspect of skating, but hearing my friend connect to Patrick's skating for those reasons just made my day

Isn't it wonderful when you get positive feedback like that from people who don't watch skating? My sister can't understand why I watch skating on TV let alone travel halfway around the world to see competitions. I guess because she knew I was in Helsinki, she decided to watch my favorite's performance, and I was so happy when she said she enjoyed it!

Usually all I hear from friends is "Can you really tell the difference between the jumps?!" It used to make me kinda mad, but now I use it as a "teachable moment".

But seriously, I know a lot of fans appreciate Patrick for his skating skills, but I'm more of an all-round fan, which means if he talked about what he ate, what types of apps he used on his phone, or any part of his personal or professional life that is not related to skating, I would still be interested.

Usually all I hear from friends is "Can you really tell the difference between the jumps?!" It used to make me kinda mad, but now I use it as a "teachable moment".

Lol, confession - I still can't always tell the difference between the jumps. I can recognize some of them by the entrances into the jump, but Patrick moves so fast that sometimes I even wonder if he really did four rotations! Slow motion video is very helpful for me when I watch him skate! :agree:

Great little interview! I love when the reporter asked, "Can you send us off?" And he said before he went into that nice spin - "I... sure can, I guess." Then the reporter covers her mouth and says, "OMG".

His impact on her was immediate! :agree: Then he gives her a skating lesson!

I'll work on a transcript of this interview later... it's so cute! Especially when he talks about running the stairs of the stadium for a warmup!

Uh oh, sounds like material for the Random Confessions thread! My only thought would be "Does not differentiating between the jumps have any effect on your enjoyment of the skating?" Most likely the answer is no - so who cares?! My friend who attends competitions with me has been watching skating for probably at least 40+ years and could care less that she doesn't know the jumps!

I think it's the same with a lot of sports. With tennis for example, I'd be hard-pressed to explain complicated rules to anyone, but I do know I appreciate elite athletes serving a ball well over 100 mph!
