2017 GP Skate Canada Ladies FS

I think people are a little harsh on Anna T. I looked it up she's been coaching Anna P. since 2004, if Anna P and her parents didn't care for how Anna T was I'm sure they wouldn't have stuck around for 13 years.

This is probably a ridiculous comparison to make, but I wonder if Anna P. feels the same way about Anna T. as I felt about my first boyfriend, whom I dated for years. I thought it was just easier to stick with him than to start over, and I chose to settle because I was afraid I'd never find anyone better for me. Happily, that was not the case!

We actually had the discussion earlier. They had their fair share of problems and at one point Anna wanted to leave. But Buyanova (Radionova's and Sotnikova's coach) rejected Anna. For reasons we don't know. So yes, perhaps Anna P. is the problem. But I still have got that feeling that Anna/Anna kind of grew up together and that might be a problem. Say you are a seasoned coach and get a student to work with - the dynamic is different. Who knows. We don't know. And it doesn't matter, it is what it is.

I agree with the people who think Anna needs a change of coaches, not necessarily because her coach is bad I know nothing about her, but because it is clear that she needs some change. Everyone gets motivated in different ways and sometimes two people do not make a good team.

This might be jumping the gun but does Ashley's bronze pretty much already earn her spot on the Olympic team? Or too soon to really say that?

Mariah is currently the #1 scored American lady, by about five points, after both GPs; followed by Ashley, Karen and Mirai. The decision should be made on points scored, not a medal in a weak field.

Just sad. Her current shape / regressing technical ability does not give those hoary old chestnuts any favours.
What does this mean? 😂

I know everyone hates repetition programs, but I really feel for Ashley. I wouldn't be surprised if her concussion history had something do to with it (like it does with her spins). Learning new choreography must be a nightmare for her.
As someone who has had a concussion, I don't think that's the reason. Hasn't Ashley learned a new program since the concussion? Why now is it a problem to learn new choreo?

For one her sense of entitlement is not commensurate to her actual ability.
Ashley did make the comment that she wants an Olympic medal. Her only chances of that are being gifted with the SP again for the team bronze.

***

This event is a disaster.
Technical panel have ate red chilli pepper.
Wagner is a very lucky lady.
😂

For one her sense of entitlement is not commensurate to her actual ability. For me she and Kostner are the most irritatingly overscored skaters in FS. The bad news for her is at least Kostner once in a blue moon shows that she is actually a capable and elegant skater. I cannot say the same for Wagner ever.

I have never heard Ashley imply that she is entitled to anything. And I watch or listen to every interview she has ever done. As much as she may have been over scored today on her skating skills Kaetlyn was equally over scored on her interpretation of the music. Kaetlyn's had no interpretation whatsoever. Her program was pretty boring. I'm not saying she didn't deserve to win but she was over scored

I'm just here to say: Kaetlyn Osmond won but Maria Sotskova is the winner for me.

This season she is one of my favourite: those jumps got higher and consistent, she added more expression and i just love her delicate programs.

Skated beautifully both the SP and LP, but her score is somehow lower than her SB (at Finlandia where scores were also very low) by 12 points.

To be honest i think in Canada they wouldn't have given her the PB even with two clean 3A in this free skate, so great job securing that silver medal, i wish her all the best.

I see many people angry with Osmond's score but i've to say i was expecting something like this: usually messy free skate with one fall and a couple of stumbles but enough to win (even the free skate which is very controversial)

Pogorilaya didn't recover completely from the injury, though i wasn't expecting a meltdown here: it's a shame and i hope she is ok now but at the same time i was rooting for Maria between the two russians here.

I agree about Sotskova. She had the best long program of the competition (though I haven't see Marin's yet). Anyone not familiar with the nuances of the judging system would be mystified as to why Kaetlyn outscored Maria.

Ashley has had 5 concussions not just one

Please, if this tech panel had been in place at Rostelecom Cup, those marks would have been equally as low overall as the ones here and Mariah would not have escaped calls herself. And at the end of the day, when you compare the roster to Skate Canada, on paper, Skate Canada was arguably more competitive - which makes Ashley's medal all the more impressive. That top contenders may have had rough days here doesn't take away from how much more competitive the Skate Canada roster was.

Has she learned new choreo since the last concussion?

You make a good point but I'm not sure what the actual selection criteria is - highest points or medals? (Someone will no doubt chime in with that info.) Points seems to be the more accurate comparison across competitions with different fields of competitors.

Is that Anna's coach in the Kiss and Cry? I could hear what she was saying to her through the B. Euro commentators. She was asking Anna why didn't she skate through the entire program more at practice. And also telling her that it was "horrible". She also told her that she has no speed and going into the loop from a "standstill". Man, she is ruthless. And why doesn't no one give the girl a long-sleeve jacket? :(

I think her PCS seemed suspiciously low, in the lower half of all the ladies which is not quite accurate, IMHO. But I guess that is to be expected since it's her debut skate... :disapp:
But 60 points?!?! That's a punishment of a score. I'll never understand that champion's bonus and newcomer's downgrading. Performance is performance - independent from former achievements. Why should fresh seniors compete at all, if they cannot even beat champions with three mistakes (in the free)?

Exactly, I am also furious. It's like they expect the newcomer to just patiently wait until their own PCS rise in maybe one or two years, but have no control over it at all. :palmf:

That really makes me scratch my head. I've been watching the practices on the stream. Don't they TALK to each other before? Don't they have a training plan? Doesn't Anna Tsareva say, listen Anna...You skate the whole FS now....all the jumps! Do it! I mean, how is that possible? They are at a Grand Prix! The biggest stage now. And they discuss the lack of training, which they knew of before, after another disaster in the KnC???? And then play the blame game? Something is really, really wrong there.

What is really wrong is that her coach could have just waited with her comments a little bit longer and discuss everything with Anna later... That was so unprofessional! At this point I think that Anna should really think about changing her coach. And the most important now is to focus on her health

Please note: Mirai's GP score is higher than Karen's -- by over 7 points.

Mariah 188.56

Ashley 183.94

Mirai 178.25

Karen 170.40

Plus Mirai outscored Karen at U.S. Classic. (Karen's FS then was Carmen.)

German Eurosport are idiots. Zagitova is not old enough to go to the Olympics....Argh....:bang:
They will be surprised in February. Really, they were awefully prepared today.

Mistakes and all, I enjoyed Osmond a lot, and I'm usually not a big fan of her skating. I thought the way she held the positions and her arm movements were really beautiful. Also, if she hits the first three jump elements, the beginning will be quite spectacular. Honda was also great, at times a bit too cute I thought.
Rika Hongo's program is still one of my favorites this season. Since we won't see her at the Olympics or Worlds, I wish she could give her program to someone like Ashley, who desperately needs a new program... :slink:

Fans are often complaining about the quad-madness in the men's field, but at least it ensures something like a fair competition between the youngsters and former champions. Shoma, Nathan and Boyang all have a realistic hope to medal - Even if their PCS are a bit lower (Shoma has catched up quite well btw.!), they can close the gap with their quads.
(Of course this madness has countless of disadvantages e.g. the devaluation of artistry, the higher danger of injury,... But at least in terms of youngster-fairness it helps a bit.)

What do you think?

Yes!!! Rika was lovely and honestly while the music is a little weird it suits her and her quirky style! I wish she had sold both her programs better but honestly I think she is a wonderfully artistic and unique skater. It's too bad her PCS never reflects that (I won't go after her TES, I know she deserves those unders).
