2018 US Championships Sr. Ladies FS

For people who don't think under-scoring matters since the relative placements seem right - if you've ever competed in a judged sport (as I have) and you know or believe they are biased against you, that makes you very nervous and prone to errors since you know you have to deliver in an unrealistic way. Unfair scoring can affect athletic performance in judged sports dramatically.

It's really obvious that
1. They didn't want Mirai to win
2. They're pinning all their hopes on Tennell
3. Everyone has now decided to hate Ashley after she got the US back on the world podium

.... Gracie's tweets have been the best thing about this night. And Mirai's happy tears, which I joined in on.

Her most recent:

I would love nothing more than to come back to skating. This women's event has inspired me more than ever. 👏🏼

Only reason why Id also send Mirai to 4cc is because of her weak fall season. And because I still think that qualifying for worlds should hold more weight than a 4ccs medal.

Ps. I 100% think Mirai deserves and earned her spot over Bradie. I’m trying to think of how the committee may think

Tennell’s PCS are the biggest farce of the ladies event at this championship. I can’t believe she will be going to the Olympics as a 20 year old skating to such childish music with awkward posture and immature presentation. I take nothing away from her technical mastery, but her PCS leave A LOT to be desired. There’s no way she will get scored as high internationally on the second mark.

I agree. Exactly like when they sent Polina.

Personally, I thought Mariah Bell was better than Chen or Wagner tonight.

Wagner has looked drawn and terrified all season. Her performances tonight and in SP were sub-par.

Chen constantly struggles in the same way, and it's sort of exhausting.

Bradie's score here would have pipped Yuna Kim for the silver at the 2014 Olympics.
I'll just leave that sitting there for a minute with a big LOL. Get real. The USFSA are to blame for overscoring these girls again, and again, and again, and then casting them aside as soon as someone comes along and skates two clean programs.

I think that's part of it. The judging system has been out of control since 2015 Worlds, maybe even before.
These are crazy numbers (if you ask me, I think the world record should still be held by Tuktamysheva, because she landed a 3A and Medvedeva can't) and something needs to be done, stat.

Utterly without controversy, IMHO. Bradie skated the best. Mirai skated the second best. Karen skated the third best over both programs.

The issue of what PCS someone might or might not get from international judges at some other event is irrelevant. The question of who might beat Caroline Kostner or Kaetlyn Osmond is irrelevant. These three U.S. skaters earned placement on the U.S. Olympic team.

A thousand times this. I can say this since I have little investment in the ladies:

1. Who cares what an international judge would score them? Is this an international comp?

2. Who cares whether they can medal at the Olys? Can Diana Nikitina medal? Does that mean Latvia won't send her?

3. Who cares which skaters are staying home from other countries? So it's the US ladies' fault that they got the job done and got three spots? And that countries have been limited to three spots since like forever?

Like, what does any of this have to do with US Nats?:scratch2:

Well the international judges don't have a problem with Zagotiva, soooo.... :confused2:

You never know - think back to Kimmie Meissen at 2006 Worlds. Intl judges go crazy with PCS too in the rare event someone hits a technically loaded program.

For those holding out on whether it will be Karen or Ashley, it will obviously be Karen. Just look at the PCS.

I REALLY wish Karen and Ashley duked it out at Four Continents. It would be the most fair thing, but again, I don't think they would give Wagner that shot (they'd be more likely to give Karen that shot if the positions were reversed).

I still can't with Bradie getting highest PCS. I can get her winning but she'll be lucky to get 65 PCS internationally.

I am ok with either Karen or Ashley but I do think Ashley's PCS were grossly underscored. There is no way Bradie would get higher PCS than Ashley.

angela wang started out strong and toward the end falter - acted like tired.

bradie not competitive internationally 3rd at sa her 2nd international competition ; 3rd place in free skate at lombardia-challenge skate. The score at nationals might.- she can go higher at olympics due to her ur can be fixed in less than 5 weeks.

mirai been competitive internationally 10 years didn't reach 200 until summer competition (that i know of ) broadmoor-local. & u.s. championships.
The u.s. championships-with errors your right she will possible go because they are sending a message mirai gets 213 with errors, but no ur on the triple axel, just on her 3lutz 2toe she can go higher

how much higher depends on whether the international don't ur her 3a like the u.s. didn't when she made a mistake-that is unlikely for several reasons mao- got call ur, when made mistakes, miki ando- when tried her quad,
i can't see mirai getting her triple axel down in less than 5 weeks. however where she got the ur can be fixed in less than 5 weeks.

I seriously doubt olympic judges will give mirai the same benefit of doubt on 3axel like the u.s. national judges did

same goes for bradie has a better chance she got a 219 with a downgrade her can be fixed in less than 5 weeks.

will mirai goes-if just based on this yes, she will, but she didn't medal at gp events, nor did she win. (never been to grand prix final in 10 years.-not a criteria)placements at worlds 7th & 10th

karen medal at u.s. classic, finished 4th at her 1st worlds help u.s. maintain 3 (not a criteria)

Bradie just jumped up to seniors how will they judge her criteria. 4 in lombardia 3rd in free skate, 3rd at sa gp event, highest scoring lady this year.
she is on a roll--she is the hot one this year.

Ashley- been consistent- went to gp final last season, medaled at gp even finished 7th always her lowest finished placements, former silver medalist as well as olympic team bronze.
ashley placements 16th 1st in 2008; 7th in 2012, 5th in 2013, 7th in 2014 along with a 7th olympics, 2015 7th, 2nd in 2016, 7th in 2017. as well as been to grand prix final 3-4 times.

not easy task.

Actually Angela was fine except a few tiny blips that others that placed ahead her had bigger ones. They torched her in the scores. There was no reason she should have been scored that low, sorry not sorry.

Is it bad that I don't even care that much who gets the 3rd spot? Really, neither Karen or Ashley made the case that they deserve it. Karen did do better at worlds last year and nationals both this year and last, so she's a little big ahead for me. But I'm kind of liking that suggestion of sending Wakaba in the 3rd spot. I don't suppose we can fast track a US citizenship in a month's time.

Imagine if Mirai had laid down her perfect 8 triple free from practice tonight though... alas

I thought the same thing. If you use up all your points in practice you are bound to not complete it when it really counts. Plus, I think she should have put it in the second half of her program to get higher marks instead of doing it right off the bat. I was so pulling for her to complete it.

I doubt Ashley will accept an assignment to 4CCs. She "doesn't do" 4CCs.

Given what happened to her here, I bet if Wagner had to do it over again, she would not have chosen to skip 4CC last season as she could have medaled and perhaps won it last year with the lackluster performances there and it would have made her resume much more marketable to the Olympic selection committe at these Olympic trials.

I totally agree with you.

I agree that Bell should go in lieu of Karen, who I love but was way, way held up at this event. I think USFSA knows the team they wanted and scores followed accordingly.

and how many times in competition has she been clean with the 3A?

Besides Mirai at NHK (the competition all her fans went gaga over) was close to perfect on all jumps, except the 3A, and still couldn't break 130! In fact she barely beat Alena Leonova in that LP!!!! Her goe was very low and will continue to be so. Bradie will get much more goe because her jumps are superior and therefore her PCS marks will go up as well (because like it or not the tech and PCS are linked). Bradie's reputation will only go up while Mirai's 3A hype hasn't really worked anywhere except at these nationals

There's always a first time. I know you don't like Mirai so there's no point in arguing. I will point out that Mirai has scored a 73 internationally with her short program. She scored 132 at 4CCs last year with her 2017 long program.
