She covers what makes Patrick a SPECIAL skater and why he'll be remembered. There are quotes from top ICE DANCERS saying how amazing his skating is. It's a respectful, thoughtful, and deep reflection on his career and she includes videos of various Chiddy programs. I'm going to blog about him again but I assure you it will be nowhere as good as this!!!!!! I knew she would come through for us, but I had NO IDEA how thoroughly!!!

No offense taken. It's just that a lot of people are really into that "getting more spots" thing, and it can be overdone. If Patricks goes to Worlds, they may have a slightly better chance of getting 2 spots next year. But if he doesn't, then Nam has a guaranteed spot this year. I'd take the guaranteed spot this year and say thank you.

This is all under my assumption that Patrick doesn't want to go. At this point, he should do exactly what he want to do for himself, and not feel any obligation to anyone else.

I should stop reading The Edge again. Fan Fests are much less annoying. Yes, some people take the "three spots thing" very seriously. It's a very US/Russia/Japan problem. Some countries have only one elite skater but they keep skating even if they have no chance to medal because they love it. There are more ways to measure success than medals/placements or even jump outcomes. Best wishes to Nam and Keegan to skate their best (assuming they are the skaters who go) and next Nationals there will be a fight for however many spots there are. I have learned to enjoy watching the skaters I like while being less concerned about their results. Michelle Kwan and Patrick Chan have taught me that.

Some people outside this thread may take issue with the bold sentence. Jump-wise, he seemed stronger last season, but this goes to show that there is more to being "technical" than consistent jump execution. What do you think he could be referring to here? Maybe he does have better jumps, but he didn't execute them in the competitions? StSeq and spins are part of TES and everything takes good technique, so maybe he feels stronger in those areas. Thoughts? The next sentence is the key, though. Patrick is the happiest he's ever been in his career. Also, he was able to be in control and skate without fear. Patrick is the happiest he's ever been in his career. He finished 9th at the Olympics, as he did at his first Worlds, and I sense a similar innocence and excitement about what's next now as Patrick had then. Full circle factoid. Also, he was able to be in control and skate without fear. I would have thought/hoped that having no fear would have resulted in perfect jumps (like it did for Nathan's LP), but, like I said, Patrick still created a very moving moment on the ice for me.

I also share your philosophy on placements/medals. At the end of the day, a skater's body of work is going to be a far more appropriate measure of their success than their results from a single competition. Patrick Chan has inspired so many skaters even without an Olympic Gold medal and that's pretty incredible if you ask me.

I wasn't expecting him to be invited, since he finished 9th and the Games aren't in Canada, so he wouldn't have gotten in as a host skater. Top 5 skaters in each discipline are invited automatically, right, plus host picks and whoever else the ISU feels like? Yes he's a legend and it's disappointing we won't see him there. But also, he hasn't (objectively) skated anywhere near his best lately. Have skaters not from the host country been invited to Olympic galas before as a career achievement award? Now I'm curious.

Strictly speaking, Misha Ge isn't from Korea, and he's invited. Still, I'm with you in not expecting it. They can't add all the skaters who won team medals, or the gala would be VERY long. Also, they already have Canadians in dance and pairs, and maybe a Canadian woman or two will be added. But keep it quiet... I don't want to jinx them.

well, i didn't expect him to be invited too. but when i saw Misha trained for gala, i thought maybe they would invite him. after all he is olympic champion in team event. they could invite few skaters from team event. it would chance for us to see him skating again. i don't think that Misha's gala programs are better for spectators than Patrick's.
i'd like to see in Gala Caro too. but ok, it's ok. they know better.

Well, I've said what I wanted to say about this - I was hoping and expecting to blog about his last performance at the Olympic gala, but since it does not look likely, I will focus my time and energy elsewhere there.

Good for you for giving it a go! I began my blog in May 2016 knowing that Patrick would retire this month, so I committed to sticking to it through thick and thin. It took up a lot of spare time that I had, but I don't regret it at all. :agree:

Meagan Duhamel said to TSL that she would never refer to herself as an Olympic Champion, but instead as an Olympic Bronze Medalist. The medal she dreamt about winning her entire life was that bronze. She loves the Team Event though. It's a very reasonable perspective and Meagan gave a great assessment of the Team Event, even though I could tell TSL "wanted" her to give that answer (the question was prefaced far more than necessary on their part, I think ). Here it is. That is Meagan's opinion, and it seems like Patrick's is different, but who knows how he would answer that question had he medaled individually as well. One example I think of immediately from gymnastics is Dominique Moceanu, who is introduced by others and refers to herself as an OGM. Her '96 team gold is her only Olympic medal. But gymnastics has a long tradition of the team event and it's always been important (in the US we even have collegiate gymnastics teams that compete against each other every weekend between January and April every year). I think it's up to each skater how to feel about the team medals. I guess what I'm saying is that it's not Patrick's problem if journalists/fans/anyone else considers it a second-class gold medal. To Patrick it is not, and that is what matters. He shouldn't feel he needs to defend his gold medal as a real gold medal, and it remains to be seen if he will need to over time. If you say all team medalists should skate in the gala, this includes several extra skaters, not just Patrick. Yes, that would be awesome, but maybe the ISU wants to limit the number of participants in the gala? Is there a quota?

When I said "objectively skating his best," I was referring to Patrick's competition results being not as great lately. Artistically, he has remained amazing and actually improved, I feel. It would be interesting to know why Misha was invited. Do they need him to choreograph something? Maybe whoever invited him just likes his skating a lot. I don't know. I am sorry that we won't to get to see Patrick in the gala. That was the ONE program of his in Sochi that I actually enjoyed watching.

Really appreciate your great effort vivley, but it's too late now. The selected skaters have started practice 2 days ago. If they think Canada already has 3 spots, why do they give Russia 4 spots?
