The idea to create a voluminous material about Evgenia Plushenko haunted me for a long time. That's only in the process of implementing the plans invariably encountered difficulties - too large-scale and controversial figure. Do not approach. Complicated everything and the fact that it was not planned to write about burning shoes on his legs, not about the cost of training at his academy, and not even why Patrick Chan means much more to figure skating history than Plushenko (the old-timers of the sport understood me).
I just wanted to say something new about the path of one of the main characters of Russian sport of the last twenty years. And as soon as the word “path” met in the same sentence with the word “hero,” I realized that I could be helped.
I decided to look at Eugene not only as a champion who stamps the most complicated cascades, but also as a character, if you like, in mythology. After all, any great athlete is also a cultural phenomenon. And if we can find many similarities in the stories of Odyssey, Ilya of Murom, Frodo Baggins, Forrest Gampa, Neo from the Matrix, Harry Potter and Spider-Man, then who said that the laws of the genre, dictated by human experience, cannot be applied to Lionel Messi, Michael Jordan, Roger Federer and, finally, to Yevgeny Plushenko?
In any case, no one will forbid us to try. So let's try to see in the Russian figure skater not only a great athlete, but also the next incarnation of the chosen one. That same superhero who will certainly kill the dragon, save the princess and eradicate evil.

He was dumbfounded not only by the fact of the complexity of the programs, subject to a fifteen-year-old youth, but also by the complete absence of visible signs of excitement and fear. Taking silver at the European Championships, Eugene went to the world championship. And it was there that everyone finally understood: having fallen from the quadruple at the very beginning of the arbitrary, he immediately fearlessly repeated the attempt. He crashed again and remained only with bronze, but is it important? It was clear that this was not the limit at all, but no one understood what to expect from the “Russian miracle”.

The god of figure skating, who used sniper single shots to send geniuses to different parts of the globe, this time decided to fire a double-barreled shotgun in the direction of Russia. Compatriots, practically of the same age, owners of cosmic talent and extremely complex characters — such a heat for a four-year period was difficult for the planet to withstand. And nothing about storing two such fruits in the same basket was out of the question.
And yet they were lucky with each other. They - like Joker and Batman, Harry Potter and Volan de Mort - complemented each other, they kindled a fire in their antagonist. And it doesn’t matter who represented the forces of good there - this is a cruel world of sports, they don’t think about good. What matters is how clearly their rivalry divided the twentieth century and the twenty-first century in figure skating. Others, of course, did not keep up with them - suffice it to say that the next (after the Games-2002) Olympiad with a similar complexity / quality ratio we had to wait sixteen years.
However, it is not necessary to reduce this confrontation to a general battle - a lot will be missed criminally. For example, I no less adore their hacks in the pre-Olympic season. Of course, the short program at the 2001 World Championships stands apart. “Revolutionary etude” against “Bolero”: the purest execution of programs, Plushenko’s gaze and the fists of Yagudin’s clenched with monstrous force after rentals, the atmosphere of an impending Olympic apocalypse - how can you even get tired of revising it !?

Anyone who is familiar with the training process in professional sports understands how hard it is.
Mishin for Plushenko is not just a coach. This is exactly the patron guide. In the highest sense of the word.

If they ask me what is harder: a ton of fluff or a ton of iron, then I will answer without thinking for a second that the character of Plushenko. But for all that, one must be aware that there is an even heavier thing - his trolley, filled to the top with all sorts of cups and medals.
Throughout his career he fought. He fought when he had to collect bottles with his mother on the street to eat. He fought with the older guys in Mishin's group - otherwise there was no survival. And he continued to fight even when he became the Olympic champion and the pride of the nation - simply because he did not want otherwise.
In general, all this can not be called a rare history for the sport. In the same way, Maradona fought, in the same way, he did not give concessions either to himself, or to teammates, or rivals Michael Jordan. Goodies do not have a place on top of the sport - they get there too high a price.
Eugene won many starts even before the start of the rental - he brilliantly used the warm-up, where he showed his strength, killing the mood of competitors. Sometimes, of course, Eugene's mental strength failed. The most serious of them happened at the most untimely time - at the 2002 Olympics. But most of his career can be described by Walter White's famous phrase from the eminent American TV series Breaking Bad: “I’m not in danger. I am the danger. ”
He did not feel sorry for himself - why should he feel sorry for his rivals? Throughout his career, Evgeni Plushenko walked over the corpses. But every other corpse was his own.

Yevgeni lost the Olympic Games to Yagudin outright - a fact. He fell from the quad, his programs (one of which he even replaced) were not so bright and, more importantly, they were much less suitable for the Olympics. The latter will be taken into account - Evgeny will bring a super hit blockbuster free program to the next Games and beat everyone.
