2018 GP Helsinki Ladies Short Program

I'm so sad for Kaori! I think the bad fall on yesterday practice must have affected her, probably not physically(I want to believe she and her team are responsible people) but mentally. She fell and hit her head on a flip so that feeling must have got to her today. And then she fell after the 3Lo+3T because that was not the usual combo, she was trying to save her scores, really gutsy of her but understandable that it didn't work out. If it is indeed mental, maybe she can shake it up and skate well tomorrow. I think she still have a chance for the podium, given that the field here is not deep.

Zagitova also seemed not as focused and relaxed as she needed to be. She was off the music basically the entire program, I cannot believe her PCS... Compare it to her performance at Nebelhorn and it was much better, artistically and obviously, technically. But I still think this competition is hers to lose. The only one who could challenge her here in case of a meltdown already had a meltdown herself so... Also, doesn't Alina kind of has a tendency to not have perfect SPs in the beginning of the season? She takes a while to grow into her programs. I'm looking forward for the Free Skate tomorrow, it will be exciting!

Yuna's program is just so... Bad? :laugh2: But her performance is endearing nonetheless, she did really well here.

Oh, and Daria did not succumb to her bad practices and all the emotions and whatever problems she was having! :yes2: She skated as well as she could I think.

Sad that Rika Hongo had the score of a Junior skater, a lower level Junior skater... :slink:

I wish everyone better luck in the Free! This SP event was kind of tough. :(

If Zagitova's PCS were too high, Kaori's too. Two serious mistakes and she
's just one point lower than at SC where she was clean.

This GP season is a gift that keeps giving... One surprise after another... Alina is lucky she got that SP score with the mistake she had, the PCS are crazy. She didn’t feel her usual self when starting the program and almost looked distressed or really nervous.

I'm shocked by the level of the performances here, it was just disappointing: in particular Sakamoto was the real shocker (considering how great she was at Skate America)

Zagitova, i thought she was overscored here (despite they have to give her credit for things like transitions or the spins): as i warned earlier this season, she has never been as consistent as Medvedeva was in her first years, even last season it took 4-5 competitions to finally see a clean short program from her, but i guess the real surprise was the fact that she popped, since Eteri's skaters are taught to go for the 3-3 anyway or save it for the second jump.

Chebotareva's resignedly disappointed expression.....me @ this entire competition

It was a shame cause i thought here Konstantinova really had a chance to make a statement in the short program: i liked the program, as always she could have more flow, but great expression with the arms, i also liked this version of Malaguena in an age where everyone use the vocals.

I can't really understand why she keeps attempting the 3F instead of the 3lo which looks a much stronger jump for her.

Alina had rough SP last season too, that‘s definitely true. But she always came back to show a flawless FS. And even Evgenia shows that she is only human. You can’t always be perfect, it’s natural and normal to make mistakes once in a while. And it‘s better for Alina to make them her and peak at Worlds like she peaked at Euros and Olympics last year. One doesn‘t need to be consistent all season as long as she is at the important events. Which she was last year and will be too this season!

For Kaori, I hope she isn‘t too hard on herself. It was heartbreaking to watch. I just hope she is healthy. If she is, she can totally make up the difference in the free and get her silver medal. If she isn‘t healthy, it‘s better not to force it. It‘s a shame because GPF was basically a lock for her with a relatively easier second GP event and a silver at her first. Life isn‘t fair but I hope this time it will. For Kaori‘s sake. I really want to see her at the GPF so I‘m kind of conflicted. But of course I know health is the most important. Stay safe, Kaori!

I think you meant Skate America and I don't think we should compare scores but if you really want to...

Kaori's marks at SA:

SS 8.32
TR 8.14
PE 8.46
CO 8.32
IN 8.46

Kaori's marks here:

SS 8.36
TR 8.04
PE 7.82
CO 8.11
IN 8.07

I think we can say Kaori's mistakes affected her PE marks (the most), as it should. I don't see why her PCS should be any lower than what she got, honestly. Do you?

Stasya is so beautiful, she looks wonderful in her dark dress. She was good today but the pressure just got to her on that last flip. The German commentators said it pretty well. They saw her hesitation right before entering the last jump (I did, too) because she knew she only needed one more clean jump and she would show something sensational: overtaking the reigning Olympic Champion in the SP. It was just too much for her at this point. But she can still medal if she keeps it together tomorrow. I quite liked the interpretation of her SP and it looks like she worked on her posture, it‘s improved at least a bit.

Personally i'm with the woman from Eurosport: i hate the music (love Satie but not with vocals), i thought it was very juniorish, it doesn't give justice to her skating. (which wasn't also as good as SA, she didn't try to sell it too much).

I think Zagitova was also overscored on PCS: falls usually affect components more but you can see after the combo the look on her face, how nervous she was and even at the end.

Her PCs seem fine. Zhenya got only 1 point below that at SC.

first of all, those giant feet in the add behind every skater are another level of kitch and very destracting  i blame them for the curse!

some thoughts

Daria PANENKOVA: she’s on her redempetion path! It’s so nice to see her in a better shape week after week, also she’s showing a little of originality starting with a spin.

Rika HONGO. Like panenkova she also looks better from her last event, now that I’m watching this program cleaner I kind of like it, definitely i love the step sequence. unluckily she’s last.

Yuna SHIRAIWA: quite a performer! I don’ like her program but she sold it

Loena HENDRICKX: I’m glad she’s back, anyway I wish I could watch a program without sound…

Alina ZAGITOVA: she was nervous, but at least she didn’t fall apart after the mistake and tomorrow is another skate.

Not really. Everything else in her program has such good quality, and her PCS was pretty low compared to normal, because of the error.

I think she had more or less the same PCS at Nebelhorn and there she was clean. And it is well known that Challengers are usually overscored.

I have a feeling Stasya is about to go off in the FS and mess my predictions up

We should be so lucky!! :dance3:

I disagree that challenger events are perceived as more overscored than any other GP event. People cry overscored at nearly every event these day anyway :confused2:

You’re welcome to back up your opinion with evidence and analysis, but if you won’t, perhaps give it a rest? Daria was fine. She received a score that was in no way outrageous. Let it go.

Calling following statement "I have nothing against Daria, but that was not a programme or a performance. At most, it was a series of elements that had no relationship to each other" just pure subjective opinion does not require an analysis. I wonder how such "analysis" should even look like.

Well I just woke up to watch the SP... and boy, apart from Yuna (even with her iffy music) and lil Hanul, that was dull and... bad. So much so my CBC stream revolted after Kaori's skate and decided not to show Konstantinova's SP at ALL... also, apparently they stream via Mac :palmf: Also, if Kaori really is injured I hope she & her team take it seriously. Concussions aren't something you should ignore, and she still has the rest of the season to tear it up.

From someone who likes Dasha: She isn‘t really selling or interpreting the program yet. She looks tense and doesn‘t have the power and confidence one needs for a Skyfall program. She sometimes looks a bit rough around the edges, too, her skating never looks as effortless as it should in order to gain high PCS. I personally would have given her more points but I can see why some wouldn‘t. She is definitely better than last week and I hope that she can stay remotely clean tomorrow and maybe her PCS will rise, too. She skated early, that also hurts.
