2021-2022 Russian Men's Figure Skating

It's not just russian men it seems. Right now, it's almost all the men except a few of the top names. I could name 5 potential world champions if they skated their best on the day, but none of them ever do. (Of course if everybody skated clean then all 5 couldn't be world champion)

This is true now! It’s so funny that I was going to bring up plushenko and yagudin mentality but even their strong mentality didn’t prevent meltdowns. Like I believe in the worlds of 2000 and 2001 and maybe 1999 plushenko and yagudin both had problems allowing the other to win! But now there is no yagudin or plushenko they are all more like pre 1998 kukiks at their best! Lol!!! Or maybe someone like a non 1994 Olympics urmanov. The people want more plushenko and yagudin but are only getting Kuliks

They are competing against physics and statistics. Back at the day, the argument was that quad is impossible for a human. It’s possible, but the outcome of each attempt is uncertain. Sure mental stability is important (most people get upset over far more trivial things than walking out in the middle of the brightly lit arena in three crystals, two feathers and a bit of spandex to potentially fall on their arse in front of TV cameras and spectators), but with the variability of factors that goes into each jump attempt in competition=volatility.

Not sure if anyone already mentioned it and I just missed it, but just to be sure, we will see Aliev, Ignatov, and Samarin at Budapest Trophy staring on 14th October. Samarin will also skate at the 2nd CoR stage tomorrow and the day after, so a pretty busy week for him.

Oh no, this is awful news! I was worried when we didn't see him at test skates, but then he was in Tashkent getting his visa for the U.S., so I hoped he would be alright to go. Poor Daniil, he really doesn't get a break.

I think he has Osgood–Schlatter disease? Hopefully, he'll see an improvement when he stops growing but it's tough during the years it lasts. How old is he? 16? Mark Kondratiuk had it when he was younger. Same goes for Nathan Chen.

Given I am going to Vegas, Mozalev would be a dream come true, but with visas, they simply will not be able to get it… unless he could get it via Kazakhstan during Denis Ten’s memorial? Anyway, I am not holding my breath that there will be a sub at all but if it ends up with Mozalev, they might as well had sent me a letter asking me to pick and chose men line-up for the event.

However, honestly it doesn't matter because in the case of a late withdrawal like this one, the federation can pick anyone they want on the list. Usually a federation will just choose the cheapest and easiest option since they pay travel cost. So, what skater in training in North America who doesn't yet have two assignments? That is probably the skater who will be chosen or perhaps there won't be a replacement at all.

I remind it's the hosting skating union who invites particular skaters to GP events apart of those who get the spot through ranking, at GP events there is no substitude system in the sense if "this skater is out, this one gets the spot instead".

RusFed wants to wait till he maybe one day gets over his health problems and finally saves Russian men's skating , fine, but don't do it at the expense of skaters who compete.

I am very aware of all that, having had followed Mozalev since he set his blade on ice in 2019 JGP because I loved his SP so much and through his troubled last season. Heck, by now even my cat might be vaguely aware of that. but it’s still not Samsonov’s fault. They both are athletically gifted young men. Whichever official didn’t take notice in September when Samsonov was conspicuous by his absence at the test skates and didn’t question his ability to compete in a few weeks, wasn’t doing their job, or saw no compelling reason to WD early enough for the spot to be filled.
