Watching Russian men and boys in GPs will not be good for my heart. All of Artur, Pert, Andrei, Misha, Dima and Zhenya have had a rough start for the season. We have yet to see Makar skate in an actual competition setting and we haven't even seen Daniil on ice at all since last junior nationals. Only ones looking decent in competition rn are Sasha and Mark.
I was just telling mom yesterday that Samsonov must be totally ready to beat Chen or something, they are so secretive. I am going to cheer for him and Danielian at Skate America anyway! 🙌

After watching the Finlandia outing, I think they might as well be picking Olympic team on alphabetic basis or random numbers generator maybe…. Ouch, poor Aliev I am so 💔
Of all the Russians Aliev had the best technique at the end. Who would have said it after his skate... :)

I would have liked Kolyada nutcracker more if he went full on Christmas pantomime mode with over the top faces and gestures. But this is such a snooze. He even repeats the music twice.

Welp... on the bright side at least Junior boys are doing OK so far (let me not jinx Kovalev and Sarnovsky for tomorrow!)
Yablokov did great at Ljubljana, and Lutfullin and Rukhin have been making decent comebacks.
Maybe it's because expectations weren't that high to begin with, but they seem to be developing nicely.

Sokolovskaya and Butsaeva teams are having a good time so far :)

Samarin and Erokhov… I am wondering if they could put Erokhov into a qualifying competition (preferably without taking Mozalev out)? Because, heck, the more they qualify, the less midnight oil burning and nervous smoking there will be come December…

Eteri wouldn't send someone who isn't ready and there isn't any rush to send samsonov to the olympics if he can't be competitive ... so you must be right

We must think positive ... all the spots in men are open for taken .. after this if I was the russfed I would send who is in the better position ... reputation or not

It’s October still. Kondratyuk, Samarin and Erokhov so far look good. Yablokov is the best in my eyes atm. But… October.

I have always been surprised that many people react so sensitively to the failures of Russian man figure skaters. Do they deserve respect to worry so much about them?
I honestly can't remember (for many, many recent years) that Russian guys have done something worthy of respect. To be honest, only the Yagudin-pLushenko era occurs in my head when I try to remember something like that.

For example, our girls constantly arouse respect - the brilliant era of Medvedeva, their fantastic fight with Alina at the Olympics, the era of quads started by Trusova-Shcherbakova, Tuktamysheva, who, despite her mature years, was able to accomplish almost the impossible - got to the world and became silver there. Or Anya Shcherbakova's fantastic FS at the last Russian Championship? I can't remember anything more athletic (tru sport is demonstrating the possibilities of fortitude).

Girls constantly show themselves to be true titans of fortitude. And if they suddenly became like our guys, I would take it sensitively - because they already have a reputation, they are an example of resilience and they inspire.

What are our guys an example of? Who can they inspire? That's why I always look at guys calmly, "with a monocle in my eyes". And I recommend the same attitude to you, at least until they have earned a reputation.

That's a rather harsh assessment... First, the current Russian men are quite decent, can be counted on to win Euros, it's hardly their fault to exist in the same era as Chen and Hanyu.

Second, as a viewer I enjoy watching them not primarily based on their chance of winning, but on special individualistic qualities that they each possess (for example, Misha Kolyada's balletic lines and high jumps, Mark Kondratiuk's quirkiness and fighting spirit, Dmitri Aliev's musical sensitivity...). Of course I want them to do well and feel sad on their behalf when they struggle, but this feeling stems from empathy acquired from watching them for many years. If I am sometimes disappointed, it's for them, not at them.

They aren't unworthy of respect just because they experience difficulties performing. In fact often the fortitude they display in facing these difficulties makes me respect them more, e.g. Samarin, Erokhov, Danielian etc. coming back from injury, Kovalev dealing with a major growth spurt that has left him over 6 feet tall, Sergei Voronov competing through 15 years. Though Tuktamysheva and Scherbakova are great examples of resilience, consider how many other female skaters retire due to puberty and other reasons - per capita these comebacks are rarer among Russian girls (maybe due to physiological differences, or intense competition that gives the struggling individuals no time to adjust and recover).

As a Russian it's understandable that you might have some patriotic expectations. However, I know other Russian fans who patiently support their countrymen through through their tribulations, and this seems to me equally patriotic. As long as the guys work hard (which they are obviously doing, maybe too much, given the injury rate in the national team this past year).

After watching the Russian Men at this event, I’m actually a bit worried about this portion of the Olympic Team event. They are just all over the place with their consistency and I still haven’t forgotten Kolyada’s performance at the last Olympics that sealed Canada’s gold.

It's not about the brilliance of Hanyu or Chen (although they are brilliant indeed). The thing is, I don't feel like I can rely on our guys. As a rule, at the moment of true trials, they fail. It's just that this is my general impression.

When Mark Kondratyuk did not screw up, but fulfilled the task set for him, and not just did his little private affairs but fulfilled the task assigned to him by the country and knowing that all Russian fans would be watching him carefully and with great excitement, I was really impressed. Because it was little bit unusual. Perhaps if the balance is in favor of such events, i.e. it will happen relatively systematically, then my attitude towards the guys will change and I will start relying on them internally.

P.S. For example, although Keegan is not as brilliant as Hanyu or Chen (although, of course, he is also a very, very good figure skater), but I respect him and feel that I can rely on him (If I were a canadian fan :)). The Canadian Federation made a wise decision by sending him to the World Cup.

For me, the Lombardia trophy shows why Kolyada should be sent.
He had a bad sp (although it was a disaster competition), and he still put that score. When the jumps aren't working (which unfortunately is the case with all the Russian Men sometimes- and actually men in general), you need a skater who can still build good points with skating skills, PCS, Spins, step sequence. Kolyada did that.

That being said I'm very dissapointed with his music choice and choreography. He is such a beautiful skater, and I could probably watch him skate to no music and still be impressed. But the program music choices are questionable, and the choreography even more so.

Truly love him so hope he can sort that out.

Have to say Aliev has an amazing sp if they can get the jumps to work. He is also an amazing skater, so hope everything can come together for him.

Semenenko is usually very consistent. Here he made mistakes, but this isn't characteristic of him.

Think given the event in general, there might be problem with the ice or something. I'm not sure, but it was a bad event in general across the board. Not a single clean program (even the top two made errors)

Sadly, I agree with this. Kolyada is perfect for classical ballet music but this program is not nearly as good as it could be given his lovely posture and lines.

Still, it is better than the previous SP and his LP.

Honestly compared to what I saw previously with his skating to nutcracker I am pleasantly surprised. But its still not what he is capable of.
Honestly could have gone to an older sp and I'd be happier (even if I don't like resued music).

In terms of his free skate, I think it's his worst up to now (I'm against using Schindlers list in general, but even as a program he has very static/jerky/uncomfortable movements with very flowy music). At this point I'd even prefer him doing nightmare before Christmas 😪

Russian men is stubbornly staying in a unstable and unreliable place! It’s so unfortunate! Aliev and kolyada and more. How can they all be so so so unstable? Obviously there is pressure because of the past but let’s be serious here- most focus is now on ladies, pairs dance and then men. So pressure must be less. Or has the pressure changed not to continue being the best but to try to keep up with everyone else. That would be something.

IMO it's the reaction to the ratio between their abilities+potential on one side and the results on the other side. They have jumps, they have skating skills, they have the physique, yet they fail to deliver so often. Whatever way people feel about them personally, this make them to think where the problem lies, because it has to be something different from who is their coach, what experience they have etc

It's not just russian men it seems. Right now, it's almost all the men except a few of the top names. I could name 5 potential world champions if they skated their best on the day, but none of them ever do. (Of course if everybody skated clean then all 5 couldn't be world champion)

For me, Mozalev’s 2019 season, and his win in JWC was the last happy moment before we went under with the pandemic. I was at the office, it was around 6 am, and I watched it in one of the conference rooms on wall-sized screen and, unbelievably, he won vs Kagiyama. It was uplifting. Then, a week before Montreal, my coveted WC trip got cancelled and everything was doom and gloom. So the whole dark years I remembered Mozalev winning and rooted for him, throughout the whole season when the Russians, men and women, ran the competitions, and invited the world in via free broadcasts, no matter how bad it got. So, maybe Russian men fall, but just like Jack Sparrow implied, I’ve heard of them. And it’s human nature to root for those you know.

Can we blame de ice this time ? I thought there was to many falls and the one with the best score tech was at the beginning

They have it all to be number one but for some reason they can ( not even the podium) ... For years I thought it was the plushy-yagudin ghost ... for men to be like them but I'm still hopping .... I think the problem was that there weren't a lot of competition between smen until now ..so they got a free pass ... now they have .... so I think in the future we will see more consistent if they want to be on top
The resolution of the situation is don't favor anyone ... let the best win

P.S.: I liked misha program .. the problem was that he was next to Brown ... and it is impossible not fall short if you don't have the jumps
