2022 Winter Olympics: Rhythm Dance

Leave my countrypeople alone, Johnny. I had hopes for him when he had nice things to say about every single man in the long program. But I guess whatever side of the bed he got out of today was the wrong one.
As Tara and Johnny are both former Olympians, I always hope they can find a way to make every athlete that takes the ice feel good about themselves no matter what the score might be. This event is HUGE for anyone who manages to make it this far and they should be praised for lacing up their skates and getting out there on the ice in front of the Entire World.

I missed the live rhythm dance event but I do have Peacock to watch the replay. For my fellow FS fans, I had a few questions as I’m hopelessly lost and want to better prepare for the FD.

1. Did USA Channel show the RD live with commentary by Tanith and Johnny on TV? Did NBC show it live as well that early in the morning?

2. Does USA Channel livestream on their app or via Peacock’s app? Did NBC app or NBC Sports App livestream the RD?

3. If anyone has Peacock, do they have the commentary version of the broadcast? I can only find the raw footage.

Thanks in advance!

I agree. I'm just not sure why he was so well behaved with the men's long and (apparently) was not during the RD.

I know it was on USA Network, but I myself watched it on the raw footage. I'm not sure you can watch a replay of the USA Network stream.

ironically he had nothing bad to say about davis/smolkin.

Okay, first post in a couple years I think. Anyway, Olympics brings me back :)

Anyhoo, impressions:

Piper-Paul - Should have gone back to the drawing board in the fall. Opening is vanilla, costuming is a huge miss. I know it was part of Lane's plan to grab them some attention, but it comes across as desperate - almost an admission that the dance isn't enough. Their pattern was bigger than the Americans', better use of entire surface. Same with twizzles. But the overall feel of the dance was a miss. Just because the lyrics say "I guess that's why the CALL it the Blues" doesn't make it bues-y...

Chock & Bates - slooooooooooooooooooow. Watch their twizzle sequence. Slow motion twizzles that cover barely any ice. The Aussie commentator was great in getting people to look at the skates - front, back, edges, lean, etc. Their skating was shallow, not deep into the ice. People used to say that Evan was 'dragging Maddie around the ice'. Maybe not so accurate any more, but in general they were scratchy and slow.

P & Cizeron - I think that their material gets weaker every year. Technically brilliant skaters, who blow everyone else out of the water with their flow, edges, extension and posture. So into the ice. That said, they came across as a bit withdrawn in this one, and the dance itself is very unmemorable. All I could think of was: This is 90+ points, but Virtue & Moir's Prince was only 82+ (I think). I know, I know, the scoring system/elements change. But still. Man, VM were dancing and could move. Again, it's not fair to turn this into a VM gush-fest (technically, I preferred PC to VM when they were competing together) but I just think PC's dance was forgettable when they have the opportunity to be un-forgettable! That said, this dance ticked all the boxes and was superior.

SK - Best I've seen him skate in a long time. Can't deny their speed. She reminds me of Krylova, body-type and lines. Didn't love the dance, and found it typically Russian in terms of gimmicks and contrived emotion/feeling. However, it's not like the other teams this year came up with much better.

HD - Probably would have had them above the Russians. Their sultry blues section was the only one of tonight's teams that I saw that really felt genuine and felt like an extension of the program, rather than just "Okay we have to whip off a quick blues pattern for 25 seconds before we get back into the program". There's something about them that I've never fully clicked with, but I felt they should have been ahead of the Russians by about a point.

In general, I would consider almost all this year's RD's to be unforgettable. Really disappointing. Too little in common. What on earth is a street-dance and how does it relate to skating? The Midnight blues didn't fit into most/any of the dances.

Anyhoo,
DD

So I haven't watched these two in a long time and I am SO impressed by their evolution as performers. They really have a much more mature look on the ice than they used to, you really feel like you are watching fully developed performers. A pity the talent in the USA is so deep it must be frustrating for them to have evolved so much and to still be a sort of distant third.
They're just waiting their turn. I would not necessarily say they are a "distant third." At US Nationals 2021 they outskated C/B who had an obvious twizzle error in the FD. They should have at least gotten 2nd. What's frustrating is that the places are basically predetermined regardless of how the skate goes. (I'm not the only one who said they should have gotten 2nd, heck, the Flutzes and Waxels ladies said they should actually have won the whole thing). At this past Nationals they were a pretty distant third but this time it was they who had the obvious twizzle error.

Well, shes obviously happy, but I’m not sure she’ll be happy when she sees the scores, because there was a lot of yellow
I think she was fine. She didn't have that shellshocked horrified look like when they got their scores from that horrible FD 2 years ago. At every competition:(
