Women's FS - 2022 Olympics: Thoughts?

I am completely traumatized by this event and need to take a break from watching figure skating. I have not been able to watch the pairs event. Is this a normal reaction? I’ve been a big skating fan for the past 24 years but the ladies event was the most horrible competition I have witnessed!

A teenager who just lost her dream?
Fully grown adults have broken down after a disappointment. It happens sometimes. When you pour your heart and soul into something and don’t get rewarded like you think you should, sometimes you lash out.

How many people miss out on promotion and raises every day and lash out and storm off?

Why can’t athletes have emotions?

It’s just amazing to me that the athletes that finish second or third have to pretend that they are happy when they are not.

Who cares if any of them are friends?
Most of these “friendships” are just faked anyway for social media and public consumption.

They were both chasing the same brass ring, so that alone is a deterrent to really being friends.

All this talk about friendship but I have never seen one skater give up a gold medal to their “friend”

It’s admirable if they truly are friends, but that’s just a bonus. The goal here wasn’t to see who can be a better friend, it was to see who the better skater was.

All this rage and disappointment might not be a bad thing either. If she decides to carry on, she can use it as a motivator for next time.
A wounded animal is dangerous.

One thing I completely forgot what I had wished to see earlier this season... A complete slow mo reviews of all jumps available to judges. Especially when it comes to quads. With all the quad obsession, I do hope we move towards making them scored very much fairly.

As a matter of fact, not just quads, but every suspect of a triple. Why this has not been employed, and why the judges are still only limited to real time, I will never know.

umm, because time is a thing? If they were to review every aspect of a triple jump it would make scoring a skater forever. I've said for a long time that a happy medium to it would be that automatically the highest 1-3 valued jumps get reviewed. But every triple, every quad getting analyzed - pretty comfortable saying it will never happen.

New thought:

maaaybe the discipline is a little broken if even the silver medalist at the olympics - who also happens to be one of the most decorated skaters from the past 4 years, hailing from one of the biggest feds and the premier club in the world - still feels betrayed by her coaches and the judges, and feels like nothing she can do is / will ever be enough

Your reaction or the reactions from the competitors (which I'm assuming is the Russians, everyone else was relatively fine from what I saw)?

I don't agree that the ladies event was a 'horrible competition' not a lot of bad skates happened. The reactions of finisher 2 and 4 to their final placements was a culmination of events and the lack of reaction from the first place finisher has actually been explained by her, a summary is basically she needed time to actually process she had won.

Yeah, but technical callers do flag these things up, don't they, as perceived by all the yellow on the screen? Judges could scrutinise those particular ones.

Also, if they want to limit, they could limit it to quads and edge jumps ,like you said. Or even better, focus on the jumps that are suspect, whether quad or not. I thought it went without saying that it would be selective analysis. If video replays are already available, why wouldn't a sporting body go an extra step to introduce an option for slo mo? Seeing as how much consistently a skater takes time from when he/she goes off the ice and goes to Kiss and Cry, in my personal opinion, I think that is more than enough time to use a slow mo option. God knows I've done it enough time on the screen when youtube does its live broadcast.

I would say it's normal. It was heavy, shocking. Not the skating, but the surrounding drama.

Trusova based on what I can see looking at the situation was a culmination of events. I don't think 1 blowup of her crying is grounds for saying the sport is broken. For starters due to covid there has been daily* testing for everyone there with the knowledge that a positive ends the Olympic competition for you and that because of covid all of the athletes have talked about being isolated from everyone, Trusova mentioned herself about missing her mom and her dog. Secondly, Sambo is stuffed with competition, everyday they are around their biggest competitors, and while in some regards that probably helps them see what their competition does on the other hand it's gotta be stressful - I'm not sure there's a way to actually change that outside of other Russian coaches having super successful skaters where they largely aren't condensed to 1 group. She remarked that everyone had a gold but her; I think part of her problem is that she's not been capable of beating her Russian competition for the most part as a senior; I remember when their first senior test skates happened, the remarks weren't if she won it was by how much would she win by.

*Its the 18th, I believe the Russian ladies went to pre-Olympic camp like the 20th or something, so they have probably been getting tested daily for a month, if not longer.

Exactly, this was the most disgusting thing of all.
Tomas Bach saying poor girl, we offer psychological help because her environment led her to this.
Please, the IOC was the one that hurt her the most by making her feel invisible and rejected at the most important moment of her life. They literally incited the hatred of all skaters and their federations by making them believe that they were competing against a cheater who was stealing their Olympic moment.
Mr. Bach, please just do your job instead of criticizing something that hasn't even been researched just because you're getting carried away and replicating a western discourse about Kamila and her team.

My question is mostly a rhetorical one. Of course each skater will have their own struggles. My point is more - Sasha has already been at a far better place than most other competitors. She has natural talent and resources that other skaters can only dream of. Some far more expressive skaters will never get the PCS that she's received at major competitions over the past few years (and especially this past year). But she still ended up miserable, broken, feeling like she's failed, or been failed. She feels this way despite having earned many medals and having had a theoretical case for getting gold. Now compare that to the other girls - less talented, less known, given far less benefit of the doubt. They couldn't even dream about making podium or being celebrated by the sport. Kaori's reaction to winning bronze said it all, and she was already probably the only lady with any chance of making it. Do we want this sport to head to a place where even an accomplished Eteri girl can feel miserable, and every non-Eteri girl can only dream of wider recognition? Is that the good place?

The two first groups were big downers apart from Kurakova - this is really the story of her season, messing up the short and then having to deliver in the free.

The third group made up a little bit, even Brezinova who improved her SB a whopping 15 points! Yelim Kim had turned from cardboard on ice into an almost expressive skater! Ditto for Loena Hendrickx - the first time this program seemed to make sense for me with proper articulation and attention to detail. Gubanova and Liu were also great, but that was kind of expected. Mariah Bell did a standout interpretation of her Hallelujah - that step sequence especially was pure gold.

The last group was not bad either despite all the drama before and after. Young You was another case of cardboard to expression surprise. Wakaba was just glorious from the first moment on and I have a hard time understanding what I see (and also a lot of other people) that the judges refuse to see (well, apart from Judge nr. 7, Bernhard Just from Austria: 9.25, 9.25, 9.50, 9.25, 9.25, easily the highest PCS she got). At least they let her have a clean 3A. Trusova is a modern day version of Bonaly - all tricks, but really nothing beyond them (her tricks are better than Bonaly's, though) and a mistaken belief that she can win with the tricks only (oh, and being a poor loser). Shcherbakova was her usual self, but managed also to will the quads out of her system. My highest GOE for the judges goes again to Judge nr 7: 9.00, 9.00, 9.25, 9.00, 9.00. By far the lowest PCS Anna got.

Kaori was the queen of hearts for me. I have thought this choreo and theme were far beyond her skills as a performer, but this time she got even "fierce" almost right. I was happy to see her get the bronze! (And again a shoutout to Judge Nr. 7: 9.75, 9.50, 10.00 (!), 9.75, 9.75. Nomen est omen is so right in his case!)

And Kamila... Breaks my heart to see such an incredible promise and talent probably getting wasted for good.

E
But was it a mistake to think the only way she could win was by going for them? At Russian Nationals (December 2020) not this year) a fabulously skated SP with only a 2A got her 75.40 points while both Kamila and Anna were ahead of her. Anna by so much that only a 3A with +GOE would have tied her with Anna or given her the lead. And both Anna and Kamila made errors and yet Sasha was the one down in 4th.

And in the FS Sasha's 2 Quad Lutz, Quad Lutz-3T combination and 3 3-3 combination long program was scored 170.XX points. And distantly in 3rd place behind Anna's 183.00 and Kamila in the FS. She places 3rd overall.

So when she focuses on the "artistry" skating clean and with only 2 Quads and no 3A her reward is to get scored behind the leader by 20 points! So she needed 2-3 more quads just to beat a 1-Quad Anna at Nationals.

Then when she makes history here she is still scored behind Anna, I do not count Sasha winning the FS by less than 2 points a fair margin. Anna should fairly be very ahead in the SP, Sasha should have been ahead significantly in the FS and then it should have been a nail-biter like in 2018 as to who gained the victory.

But Sasha is treated unfairly either way. She goes for clean easy content for her but still the hardest in the Russian field and performed both programs to the highest quality and is told hey not good enough you get 4th, 3rd, and 3rd overall, you need a 3A and 4-5 Quads so your bv will be so high they cannot cheat you out of the victory. Then in another competition she goes for the 3Axel 4-5 Quads and executes most of it and her bv advantage still conveniently evaporates and everyone says oh go for only a double Axel on the SP and 2-3 Quads and you would've won. As if that makes any sense mathematically.

SP at Rus Nats with a 2A in Dec 2020: 75.XX
SP at 2022 Olympics with 3A>fsll: 74.XX

LP at Rus Nat with 2 QLz: 170.XX
LP at 2022 Olympics with 5 Quads: 177.XX

No matter what she does she is always punished, she tries the "Artistic" way and she loses to the 1-Quad skater to the point where she needed to more than double her technical content to win mathematically. Sasha goes for the maximum and the other skater is still conveniently lifted high enough for her to lose overall to 2 Quads. Sasha should have won or it should have come down to 0.XX points

I think he can make a statement on his observation of Eteri's behavior.

So forgive me for a little more blah blah, but I am not against willful usage of drugs in sports.
The reason that you should be opposed to drugs in sports is because it is a barbaric practice that casts the athletes in the position of throw-away pawns that are paraded out for the enjoyment of us Caesars. In the olden days the Roman gladiators underwent extensive training so that the public could cheer at the spectacle of watching them kill each other.

Killing by drugs takes a little longer. It may my take several years before the athletes actually die of cancer or of long-term health problems associated with extreme weight control.

I remember when U.S. wrestler Rulon Gardner was about to take on thre Soviet legend Alexandr Karelin at the 2000 Olympics. Gardner boasted, "I'm ready. Now we'll see who has the best pharmacologists, U.S. or Russsia." I for one do not enjoy watching teams of pharmcologists going at it in the ring. Garner later ballooned up too 600 pounds and suffered from many physical and emotional problems.

Personally I wopuld rather watch teams of robots compete. That would be more interesting: which country has the best computer programmers and robotic engineers?

I was referring to my reaction. And when I say horrible competition, I was referring to the drama not the actual competition.

Well, I was surprised that in the current WADA rules drug can be banned if it has 0 negative impact.
And there are already many of such drugs banned.

So your analogy with blood and gore is not exactly correct.
